स्तवनं शृणु देवेन्द्र महालक्ष्म्याः सुखप्रदम्
Hear, O Lord of the gods, the hymn to Mahalakshmi that bestows happiness.
नारायण उवाच बुद्धेरगोचरां सूक्ष्मां तेजोरूपां सनातनीम्
Narayana said: Beyond the grasp of intellect, subtle, of the form of light, eternal,
स्वेच्छामयीं निराकारां भक्तानुग्रहविग्रहाम्
Self-willed, formless, whose very form is the grace shown to devotees,
परां चतुर्णां वेदानां पारबीजं भवार्णवे
The supreme one of the four Vedas, the supreme seed in the ocean of existence,
योगिनां चैव योगानां ज्ञानानां ज्ञानिनां तथा
Of yogis and of yogas, of knowledges and of the knowers as well,
यया विना जगत्सर्वमबीजं निष्फलं ध्रुवम्
Without whom, all the worlds are certainly seedless and fruitless.
प्रसीद जगतां माता रक्षास्मानतिकातरान्
Be gracious, Mother of the worlds; protect us who are greatly afflicted.
नमः शक्तिस्वरूपायै जगन्मात्रे नमो नमः
Salutations to her who is the embodiment of power, repeated salutations to the Mother of the universe.
हरिभक्तिप्रदायिन्यै मुक्तिदायै नमो नमः
Repeated salutations to her who bestows devotion to Hari and grants liberation.
कुपुत्राः कुत्रचित्सन्ति न कुत्रापि कुमातरः
There may be bad sons in some places, but never is there a bad mother anywhere.
स्तनन्धयेभ्य इव मे हे मातर्देहि दर्शनम्
O Mother, just as to infants at your breast, grant me your vision.
इत्येवं कथितं वत्स पद्मायाश्च शुभावहम्
Thus, O child, this auspicious hymn to Padma has been spoken.
इदं स्तोत्रं महापुण्यं पूजाकाले च यः पठेत्
Whoever recites this most meritorious hymn at the time of worship,
इत्युक्त्वा श्रीहरिस्तं च तत्रैवान्तरधीयत
Having spoken thus, Shri Hari then disappeared right there.
नारायण उवाच जगाम शीघ्रं पद्मायै तीरं क्षीरपयोनिधेः मनसा स्तवनं दिव्यं स्मारं स्मरं पुनःपुनः
Narayana said: He quickly went to the shore of the milk ocean, to Padma, recalling again and again the divine hymn in his mind.
ते सर्वे भक्तियुक्ताश्च तुष्टुवुः कमलालयाम्
All of them, filled with devotion, praised the abode of the lotus.
सा तेषां स्तवनं श्रुत्वा सद्यः साक्षाद्बभूव ह
Hearing their hymn, she immediately appeared before them in person.
जगद्व्याप्तं सुप्रभया जगन्मात्रं यया मुने
O sage, she who fills the universe with her splendid radiance, the mother of the world, by whom all is pervaded.
श्री महालक्ष्मीरुवाच भ्रष्टान्दृष्ट्वा ब्रह्मशापाद्बिभेमि ब्रह्मशापतः
Śrī Mahālakṣmī said: Seeing them fallen due to Brahmā's curse, I am afraid of the curse of Brahmā.
प्राणा मे ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे शश्वत्पुत्राधिकं प्रियाः
All the brāhmaṇas are my very life, dearer to me than sons, always.
विप्रा ब्रुवन्तु मां तुष्टा यास्यामि भवदाज्ञया
Let the brāhmaṇas speak to me, satisfied; I will depart according to your command.
गुरुभिर्ब्राह्मणैर्देवैर्भिक्षुभिर्वैष्णवैस्तथा
By teachers, brāhmaṇas, gods, mendicants, and also by Vaiṣṇavas,
नारायणश्च भगवान्बिभेति ब्रह्मशापतः
Even the blessed Nārāyaṇa fears the curse of Brahmā.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे ब्रह्मन्ब्राह्मणा हृष्टमानसाः
Meanwhile, O brāhmaṇa, the brāhmaṇas were filled with joy in their hearts.
अंगिराश्च प्रचेताश्च क्रतुश्च भृगुरेव च
Aṅgirā, Pracetas, Kratu, and also Bhṛgu,
सनकश्च सनन्दश्च तृतीयश्च सनातनः
Sanaka, Sananda, and the third, Sanātana,
कपिलश्चासुरिश्चैव वोढुः पञ्चशिखस्तथा
Kapila, Asuri, Voḍhu, and likewise Pañcaśikha,
और्वः कात्यायनश्चैव कणादः पाणिनिस्तथा
Aurva, Kātyāyana, Kaṇāda, and also Pāṇini,
ब्राह्मणा विविधैर्द्रव्यैः पूजयामासुरीश्वरीम्
The brāhmaṇas worshipped the Lady of Lords with various offerings.
स्तुत्वा मुनीन्द्रास्तां भक्त्या चक्रुराराधनं मुदा
Having praised her with devotion, the chief sages joyfully performed her worship.
