इन्द्रियैश्चेन्द्रियरतिं वर्द्धयन्तीं पदे पदे
With her senses, she increased sensual delight at every step.
कामयुक्तश्च पुरतस्तस्थौ तस्याश्च नारद
Filled with desire, he stood before her, and Nārada was also present.
श्रुत्वा तद्वचनं रम्भा महाशृङ्गारलोलुपा
Hearing those words, Rambhā, greatly eager for passion, became restless.
स्मेरानना कटाक्षेण स्तनोर्वोर्दर्शनेन च
With a smiling face, a sidelong glance, and the display of her breasts and thighs.
मितं सारं सुमधुरं सुस्निग्धं कोमलं प्रियम्
She spoke words that were measured, meaningful, very sweet, affectionate, gentle, and pleasing.
रम्भोवाच नाहं सन्तोषजननी धूर्त्तानां दुष्टमित्रता
Rambhā said: I am not the cause of satisfaction for the wicked, nor a friend to evil companions.
यथा मधुकरो लोभात्सर्वपुष्पासवं लभेत्
Just as a bee, out of greed, obtains the nectar of all flowers,
तथैव कामुकी लोके भ्रमेद्भ्रमरवत्सदा
so too does a lustful woman in the world wander always like a bee.
सुपुमानङ्गवत्स्त्रीणां यथा शाखाश्च शाखिषु
A handsome man is for women as branches are for birds.
स्वकार्य्यमुद्धरेद्यावत्तावद्वा स प्रयोजनम्
He fulfills his own purpose with them as long as there is use.
यावत्तडागे तोयानि तावद्यादांसि तेषु च
As long as there is water in a pond, so long do the creatures remain in it.
त्वं देवानामीश्वरोऽसि कामिनीनां च वाञ्छितः
You are the lord of the gods and the desired one of women.
युवानं रसिकं शान्तं सुवेषं सुन्दरं प्रियम्
Young, skilled in pleasure, calm, well-dressed, beautiful, and dear—
दुश्शीलं रोगिणं वृद्धं रतिशक्तिवियोजितम्
not ill-natured, not diseased, not old, nor deprived of the power of passion—
का मूढा न च वाञ्छन्ति त्वामेवं गुणसागरम्
what foolish woman would not desire you, an ocean of such qualities?
इत्युक्त्वा सस्मिता सा च तं पपौ वक्रचक्षुषा
Having spoken thus with a smile, she gazed at him with sidelong glances.
ज्ञात्वा भावं स्मरार्त्तायाः स्मरशास्त्रविशारदः
Knowing the feelings of the love-stricken woman, skilled in the science of love,
चुचुम्ब रहसि प्रौढां नग्नां च सुभगां वराम्
he embraced her in secret, mature, unclothed, and most lovely.
नानाप्रकारशृङ्गाराद्विपरीतादिकान्मुने
With various kinds of amorous play, including the reverse and others, O sage,
तौ कामाहितचित्तौ नो बुबुधाते दिवानिशम्
the two, their minds absorbed in desire, did not notice day or night.
स च कृत्वा स्थले क्रीडां तया सह सुरेश्वरः
And the lord of the gods played on land with her.
स चकार जलक्रीडां तया सह मुदा क्षणम्
He also played in the water with her joyfully for a while.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तेन वर्त्मना मुनिपुंगवः
Meanwhile, by that path, the eminent sage arrived.
तं च दृष्ट्वा मुनीन्द्रं च देवेन्द्रः स्तब्धमानसः
Seeing him and the chief of sages, Indra became stiff-minded.
पारिजातप्रसूनं यद्दत्तं नारायणेन वै
That pārijāta flower which was given by Nārāyaṇa,
दत्त्वा पुष्पं महाभागस्तमुवाच कृपानिधिः
Having given the flower, the most fortunate one was addressed by the compassionate Lord.
दुर्वासा उवाच मूर्ध्नीदं यस्य देवेन्द्र जयस्तस्यैव सर्वतः
Durvāsā said: Upon whose head this is placed, O king of gods, victory belongs to him in every way.
पुरःपूजा च सर्वेषां देवानामग्रणीर्भवेत्। तच्छायेव महालक्ष्मीर्न जहाति कदाऽपि तम्
He shall be the foremost among all the gods in worship; Mahālakṣmī never abandons him, even for a moment.
भक्त्या मूर्ध्नि न गृह्णाति योऽहंकारेण पामरः इत्युक्त्वा शंकरांशश्च ह्यगमच्छंकरालयम्
If someone does not accept it on his head with devotion, but with arrogance, he is wretched; having said this, the portion of Śaṃkara went to the abode of Śaṃkara.
तत्स रम्भांतिके तिष्ठंश्चिक्षेप गजमस्तके
Standing near Rambhā, he placed it upon the elephant's head.
