बालकस्य च तस्यैव मङ्गलं मङ्गले दिने पूज्यानामधिको बालस्तेनोपबर्हणाभिधः
On an auspicious day, the boy's consecration was performed; he surpassed the venerable ones and was named Upabarhaṇa.
सौतिरुवाच गन्धर्वराजः प्रददौ ब्राह्मणेभ्यो मुदाऽन्वितः
Sauti said: The king of the Gandharvas joyfully gave gifts to the brāhmaṇas.
उपबर्हणस्तु कालेन हरेर्मन्त्रं सुदुर्लभम्
In time, Upabarhaṇa obtained the exceedingly rare mantra of Hari.
एकदा गण्डकीतीरे तं च सम्प्राप्तयौवनम्
Once, on the bank of the Gaṇḍakī, he attained the fullness of youth.
ताश्च तीव्रं तपः कृत्वा प्राणान्संत्यज्य योगतः
They performed intense austerities, and, through yoga, gave up their lives.
उपबर्हणगन्धर्वं ताश्च तं वव्रिरे पतिम्
Those women chose Upabarhaṇa the Gandharva as their husband.
गृहीत्वा ताश्च गन्धर्वो युवा सुस्थिरयौवनः
The Gandharva, youthful and ever steadfast in youth, took them as his wives.
ततोऽपि सुचिरं राज्यं कृत्वा ताभिः सहानिशम्
Thereafter, he ruled the kingdom with them for a long time, day and night.
दृष्ट्वा स रम्भारम्भोरुनर्तने कठिनं स्तनम्
Seeing Rambhā's firm breast sway in her dance,
द्रुतं तत्याज सङ्गीतं मूर्च्छां प्राप सभातले
He immediately abandoned his song and, on the floor of the assembly, fell unconscious.
व्रज त्वं शूद्रयोनिं च गान्धर्वीं तनुमुत्सृज ।। 1.13.
Go, you, to a birth among the Śūdras, and abandon your Gandharvī form.
विना विपत्तेर्महिमा पुंसां नैव भवेत्सुत
Without adversity, O son, there is truly no greatness among men.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा स विधिरगच्छत्पुष्कराद् गृहम्
Having thus spoken, that Creator departed from Puṣkara to his own abode.
मूलाधारं स्वाधिष्ठानं मणिपूरमनाहतम्
The Mūlādhāra, Svādhiṣṭhāna, Maṇipūra, and Anāhata,
इडां सुषुम्नां मेधां च पिङ्गलां प्राणहारिणीम्
Iḍā, Suṣumnā, Medhā, and Piṅgalā, the carrier of life-breath,
विशुद्धां च निरुद्धां च वायुसंचारिणीं तथा
Viśuddhā, Niruddhā, and likewise the channel of circulating air,
बुद्धिसंचारिणीं चैव ज्ञानजृम्भनकारिणीम्
And also the channel of intellect, which causes the expansion of knowledge—
एताः षोडशधा नाडीर्भित्त्वा वै हंसमेव च
Piercing these sixteen nāḍīs, and indeed the haṃsa,
स्थित्वा मुहूर्तमात्मानमात्मन्येव युयोज ह
He remained for a moment, uniting his self with the Self.
वीणां त्रितन्त्रीं दुष्प्राप्यां वामस्कन्धे निधाय च
Placing the three-stringed, hard-to-obtain vīṇā upon his left shoulder,
संजल्पन्परमं ब्रह्म वेदसारं परात्परम् 1.13.
He uttered the supreme Brahman, the essence of the Vedas, the highest of the high.
प्राच्यां कृत्वा शिरःस्थानं पश्चिमे चरणद्वयम्
Placing his head towards the east and both feet towards the west,
गन्धर्वराजस्तं दृष्ट्वा भार्य्यया सह तत्क्षणम्
The king of the Gandharvas, seeing him at that moment with his wife,
पत्न्यश्च बान्धवाः सर्वे विलप्य रुरुदुर्भुशम्
All the wives and relatives wailed and wept bitterly.
पञ्चाशद्योषितां मध्ये प्रधाना महिषी च या
Among fifty women, she who was the chief queen,
उच्चै रुरोद सा तीव्रं कान्तं कृत्वा च वक्षसि
She cried out loudly in anguish, embracing her beloved to her breast.
मालावत्युवाच दर्शनं देहि मां बन्धो निमग्नां शोकसागरे
Mālāvatī said: 'Grant me a vision, O friend, for I am submerged in an ocean of sorrow.'
विस्रम्भके सुवसने रम्ये चन्दनकानने
In the delightful sandalwood forest, adorned with beautiful garments, in the place of intimacy—
चन्दनाचलसान्निध्ये चारुचन्दनकानने
In the vicinity of the sandalwood mountain, within the beautiful sandalwood forest,
गन्धमादनशैलैकदेशे रम्ये नदीतटे
