परमानन्दसंयुक्तो देव्या सह महेश्वरः पुष्टिं ददौ विवाहेन गणेशाय महात्मने
Filled with supreme bliss, Maheśvara, together with the goddess, bestowed prosperity through marriage upon the great-souled Gaṇeśa.
सुताभ्यां सगणैः सार्द्धं पार्वती हृष्टमानसा
Parvatī, her heart delighted, was together with her two sons and their attendants.
इत्येवं कथितं सर्वं कुमारस्याभिषेचनम्
Thus, everything concerning the consecration of Kumāra has been told.
पार्वतीपुत्रलाभश्च देवानां च समागमः
The obtaining of a son by Pārvatī and the assembly of the gods have also been described.
नारद उवाच पृच्छामि त्वामहं किंचिदतिसन्देहवान्यतः
Nārada said: I wish to ask you something, for I have a great doubt about this.
सुतस्य त्रिदशेशस्य शंकरस्य महात्मनः
It concerns the son of Śaṃkara, the great-souled lord of the gods.
परिपूर्णतमः श्रीमान्परमात्मा परात्परः
He is completely perfect, glorious, the supreme self, transcending even the highest.
अहो भगवतस्तस्य मस्तकच्छेदनं विभो
O Lord, how did it happen that his head was cut off?
नारायण उवाच विघ्नेशस्य बभूवेदं विघ्नं येन च नारद
Nārāyaṇa said: O Nārada, this obstacle befell Vighneśa, and I will tell you how.
एकदा शंकरः सूर्य्यं जघान परमष्टधा
Once, Śaṃkara struck Sūrya and shattered him into many pieces.
श्रीसूर्य्योऽमोघशूलेनाशनितुल्येन तेजसा
The glorious Sūrya, with his unfailing spear, possessing radiance equal to lightning—
ददर्श कश्यपः पुत्रं मृतमुत्तानलोचनम्
Kaśyapa saw his son lying dead, eyes turned upward.
हाहाकारं सुराश्चक्रुर्विलेपुर्भयकातराः
The gods cried out in distress and, terrified, lamented.
निष्प्रभं तनयं दृष्ट्वा चाशपत्कश्यपः शिवम्
Seeing his son devoid of luster, Kaśyapa cursed Śiva.
मत्पुत्रस्य यथा वक्षश्छिन्नं शूलेन तेऽद्य वै
Just as my son's chest was pierced by your spear today—
शिवश्च गलितक्रोधः क्षणेनैवाशुतोषकः
Śiva, his anger gone, was appeased in a moment, for he is easily satisfied.
ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशानामंशश्च त्रिगुणात्मकः
He is a portion of Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesha, and is of the nature of the three qualities.
ननाम पितरं भक्त्या शंकरं भक्तवत्सलः
He, devoted to his father, bowed with reverence to Shankara, who is compassionate to devotees.
विषयान्नैव जग्राह कोपेनैवमुवाच ह
He did not accept any enjoyments, and, in anger, spoke thus.
सर्वं तुच्छमनित्यं च नश्वरं चेश्वरं विना
Everything is insignificant, impermanent, and perishable without the Lord.
देवैश्च प्रेरितो ब्रह्मा समागत्य ससम्भ्रमः
Prompted by the gods, Brahma came there, filled with concern.
तस्मै दत्त्वाऽऽशिषश्शम्भुर्ब्रह्मा च स्वालयं मुदा
Having given blessings to him, Shambhu and Brahma joyfully returned to their own abodes.
अथ माली सुमाली च व्याधिग्रस्तौ बभूवतुः
Then Mālī and Sumālī both became afflicted with disease.
तावुवाच स्वयं ब्रह्मा युवां च भजतां रविम्
Brahma himself spoke to them: 'You both should worship Ravi (the Sun).'
सूर्य्यस्य कवचं स्तोत्रं सर्वपूजाविधिं विधिः
The procedure for all worship, the hymn, and the protective formula of the Sun was prescribed.
ततस्तौ पुष्करं गत्वा सिषेवाते रविं मुने
Then those two went to Pushkara and served Ravi, O sage.
ततः सूर्य्याद्वरं प्राप्य निजरूपौ बभूवतुः
Then, having obtained a boon from the Sun, they regained their own forms.
नारद उवाच दानवाभ्यां पुरा दत्तं सूर्यस्य परमात्मनः
Narada said: 'Formerly, by the two Danavas, worship was offered to Surya, the Supreme Self.'
किं वा पूजाविधानं वा किं मन्त्रं व्याधिनाशनम्
What was the method of worship, or what mantra destroys disease?
सूत उवाच स्तोत्रं च कवचं मन्त्रमूचे तत्पूजनक्रमम्
Suta said: 'He spoke the hymn, the protective formula, and the procedure for that worship.'
