तुष्टाव कमलाकान्तं शान्तं सस्मितमीश्वरम् गरुडस्थं जगत्कान्तं भ्रामयन्तं सुदर्शनम्
She praised the Beloved of Lakṣmī, the peaceful Lord, smiling, seated upon Garuḍa, the delight of the universe, who wields the Sudarśana discus.
निषेकं खण्डितुं शक्तं निषेकजनकं विभुम्
The mighty Lord, able to destroy conception and also the source of conception.
प्रभुस्तत्स्तवनात्तुष्टस्तस्यै विप्र वरं ददौ
Pleased by that praise, the Lord granted her a boon, O brāhmaṇa.
जीवयामास तं तत्र ब्रह्मज्ञानेन सर्ववित्
There, by means of knowledge of Brahman, the all-knowing one restored him to life.
त्वं जीवाकल्पपर्य्यन्तं परिवारैः समं गज
You, along with your attendants, O elephant, shall live until the end of the age of beings.
आहृत्य पार्वतीहस्ताद्बालं कृत्वा स्ववक्षसि
Taking the child from Pārvatī's hand, he placed him upon his own chest.
ब्रह्मस्वरूपो भगवान्ब्रह्मज्ञानेन लीलया
The blessed Lord, of the nature of Brahman, by his play and knowledge of Brahman—
पार्वतीं बोधयित्वा तु कृत्वा क्रोडे च तं शिशुम्
Having instructed Pārvatī, he placed the child in her lap.
विष्णुरुवाच जगद्बुद्धिस्वरूपाऽसि त्वं न जानासि किं शिव
Viṣṇu said: You are the very form of the world's intelligence—do you not know this, O Śiva?
कल्पकोटिशतं भोगी जीविनां तत्स्वकर्मणा
For a hundred million ages, living beings enjoy according to their own actions.
इन्द्रः स्वकर्मणा कीटयोनौ जन्म लभेत्सति
Indra, by his own actions, may obtain birth in the womb of an insect.
सिंहोऽपि मक्षिकां हन्तुमक्षमः प्राक्तनं विना
Even a lion is unable to kill a fly without previous cause.
सुखं दुःख भयं शोकमानन्दं कर्मणः फलम्
Pleasure, pain, fear, sorrow, and joy are the results of action.
इहैव कर्मणो भोगः परत्र च शुभाशुभैः
Here itself is the enjoyment of actions, and hereafter too, by virtue of good and evil deeds.
कर्मणः फलदाता च विधाता च विधेरपि
He is the giver of the fruits of action, and the ordainer even of the ordainer.
संहर्तुरपि संहर्त्ता पातुः पाता परात्परः
He is the destroyer even of the destroyer, the protector of the protector, the supreme beyond the supreme.
वयं यस्य कलाः पुंसो ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वराः
We, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Maheśvara, are but portions of that Person.
कलांशाः केऽपि तद्धर्मे कलाशांशाश्च केचन
Some are portions of his portions, and others are portions of those portions, in his order.
श्रीविष्णोर्वचनं श्रुत्वा परितुष्टा च पार्वती
Hearing the words of Lord Viṣṇu, Pārvatī became greatly pleased.
तुष्टाव पार्वती तुष्टा प्रेरिता शंकरेण च
Pārvatī, delighted and inspired by Śaṅkara, offered her praises.
आशिषं युयुजे विष्णुः शिशुं च शिशुमातरम्
Viṣṇu bestowed blessings upon the child and his mother.
ब्रह्मा ददौ स्वमुकुटं धर्मो वै रत्नभूषणम्
Brahmā gave his own crown, and Dharma presented a jeweled ornament.
तुष्टाव तं महादेवश्चात्यन्तं हृष्टमानसः
The great Lord Mahādeva, his heart overflowing with joy, offered praise to him.
अश्वानां च गजानां च सहस्राणि शतानि च
Hundreds of thousands of horses and elephants were given.
हिमालयश्च संतुष्टो हृष्टा देवाश्च तत्र वै
The Himālaya was satisfied, and the gods there were filled with joy.
ब्राह्मणान्भोजयामास कारयामास मङ्गलम्
He fed the brāhmaṇas and arranged for auspicious rites.
शनिं संलज्जितं दृष्ट्वा पार्वती कोपशालिनी
Seeing Śani abashed, Pārvatī, filled with anger, spoke.
दृष्ट्वा शप्तं शनिं सूर्य्यः कश्यपश्च यमस्तथा
Seeing Śani cursed, Sūrya, Kaśyapa, and Yama likewise reacted.
रक्ताक्षास्ते रक्तमुखाः कोपप्रस्फुरिताधराः
Their eyes were red, their faces flushed, and their lips quivered with wrath.
ब्रह्मा तान्बोधयामास विष्णुना प्रेरितः सुरैः
Prompted by Viṣṇu and the gods, Brahmā sought to pacify them.
