शुद्धचम्पकवर्णाभः कोटिचन्द्रसमप्रभः
He had the appearance of pure campaka flowers, and shone like ten million moons.
अतीव सुन्दरतनुः कामदेवविमोहनः
His form was exceedingly beautiful, enchanting even the god of love.
सुन्दरे लोचने बिभ्रच्चारुपद्मविनिन्दके
He possessed lovely eyes, surpassing even the most charming lotus.
कपालं च कपोलं च परमं सुमनोहरम्
His forehead and cheeks were supremely delightful.
त्रैलोक्ये वै निरुपमं सर्वांगं बिभ्रदुत्तमम्
In the three worlds, he bore an incomparable, perfect form, excelling in every aspect.
नारायण उवाच ब्राह्मणान्वेषणं कृत्वा बभ्राम परितो मुने
Nārāyaṇa said: Having searched for the brāhmaṇas, he wandered everywhere, O sage.
पार्वत्युवाच हे तात दर्शनं देहि प्राणान्वै रक्ष मे विभो
Pārvatī said: O father, grant me your vision; O Lord, protect my very life.
शिव शीघ्रं समुत्तिष्ठ ब्राह्मणान्वेषणं कुरु
Śiva, rise quickly and seek out the brāhmaṇas.
अगृहीत्वा गृहात्पूजां गृहिणोऽतिथिरीश्वर
If a householder does not offer worship at home, the guest, who is the Lord, is not received.
पितरस्तन्न गृह्णन्ति पिण्डदानं च तर्पणम्
The ancestors do not accept offerings of rice-balls or libations from such a person.
हव्यं पुष्पं जलं द्रव्यमशुचेश्च सुरासमम्
Oblations, flowers, water, and gifts from one impure are like wine to the gods.
एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र वाग् बभूवाशरीरिणी
Meanwhile, there arose a bodiless voice at that place.
शान्ता भव जगन्मातस्स्वसुतं पश्य मन्दिरे
Be at peace, O Mother of the world; see your own son in the temple.
सुपुण्यकव्रततरोः फलरूपं सनातनम्
He is the eternal fruit of the tree of meritorious vows.
ध्यायन्ति वैष्णवा देवा ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवादयः
The Vaiṣṇava gods, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, and others, meditate upon him.
यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण सर्वविघ्नो विनश्यति
By merely remembering him, all obstacles are destroyed.
कल्पे कल्पे ध्यायसि यं ज्योतीरूपं सनातनम्
In every age, you meditate upon him, the eternal form of light.
तव वाञ्छापूर्णबीजं तपःकल्पतरोः फलम्
He is the seed that fulfills your desire, the fruit of the wish-fulfilling tree of your austerity.
नायं विप्रः क्षुधाऽऽर्त्तश्च विप्ररूपी जनार्दनः सरस्वती त्वेवमुक्त्वा विरराम च नारद
This is not a brāhmaṇa afflicted by hunger, but Janārdana himself in the form of a brāhmaṇa; thus spoke Sarasvatī, and then fell silent, O Nārada.
त्रस्ता श्रुत्वाऽऽकाशवाणीं जगाम स्वालयं सती
Frightened upon hearing the voice from the sky, Satī returned to her own abode.
पश्यन्तं गेहशिखरं शतचन्द्रसमप्रभम्
She saw the peak of the house, shining like a hundred moons.
कुर्वन्तं भ्रमणं तल्पे पश्यन्तं स्वेच्छया मुदा
She saw him wandering on the couch, rejoicing as he pleased.
दृष्ट्वा तदद्भुतं रूपं त्रस्ता शंकरसन्निधिम्
Seeing that wondrous form, she, frightened, approached the presence of Śaṅkara.
पार्वत्युवाच कल्पे कल्पे ध्यायसि यं तं पश्यागत्य मन्दिरम्
Pārvatī said: 'The one whom you have meditated upon in every age—behold him now, having come to the temple.'
शीघ्रं पुत्रमुखं पश्य पुण्यबीजं महोत्सवम्
Quickly behold the face of your son, the auspicious seed, the great festival.
स्नानं च सर्वतीर्थेषु सर्वयज्ञेषु दक्षिणम्
The merit gained by bathing in all holy waters, and by giving gifts at all sacrifices,
सर्वदानेन यत्पुण्यं क्ष्माप्रदक्षिणतश्च यत्
The merit from all acts of charity, and from circumambulating the earth,
सर्वैस्तपोभिर्यत्पुण्यं देवानशनैर्व्रतैः
The merit gained by all austerities, by vows performed for the gods over many years,
यद्विप्रभोजनैः पुण्यं यदेव सुरसेवनैः
The merit from feeding the twice-born, and from serving the gods—
पार्वत्या वचनं श्रुत्वा शिवः संहृष्टमानसः ददर्श तल्पे स्वसुतं तप्तकाञ्चनसन्निभम्
Hearing Pārvatī's words, Śiva, his mind filled with joy, saw his own son on the bed, shining like molten gold.
