Śiva was obtained in this very birth by much austerity.
But I did not obtain that radiance born of love, by the divine māyā.
Now, by a vow, I wish to obtain a son like you.
Having heard all this, O ocean of compassion, you ought to show me your grace.
Whoever attentively listens to this hymn of Parvati in Bharata,
For a year, subsisting on sacrificial food, worships Hari with devotion,
O Brahman, this hymn to Vishnu is a bringer of all prosperity and wealth.
It is the seed of all beauty and increases the abundance of fame.
Narayana said: He revealed his true form, invisible to all, exceedingly rare.
Having praised the goddess, steadfast in her vow, with her mind fixed on Krishna,
Adorned with pure jewels and decorated with diamonds,
Wearing yellow garments, purified by fire, supreme, the best among the lineage,
Of youthful age, with a splendid appearance, marked with sandalwood,
Adorned with a garland of jasmine and crowned with peacock feathers,
The abode of playful beauty surpassing millions of Cupids, enchanting to behold,
Seeing the form, the beautiful son, matching her own beauty,
After awakening the boy, she showed him, unclothed, to the goddess,
Durga gave various jewels to the Brahmins,
She fed the Brahmins, as well as the gods and the mountains.
She had the drums sounded and arranged for auspicious music.
Having completed her vow, Durga, smiling, gave gifts.
She also offered betel, delightful and fragrant with camphor and other scents.
On a beautiful bed, white as milk froth and adorned with precious gems, the supreme goddess slept in private together with her lord.
In a delightful part of Kailāsa, within a fragrant sandalwood grove,
Where the air was filled with the hum of bees and the calls of male cuckoos,
At the moment of the emission of seed, Viṣṇu, by his own māyā,
O sage, appeared as a matted-haired ascetic, without oil, in soiled garments, like a beggar,
Extremely thin in body, yet bearing a radiant tilaka mark,
He called out to Mahādeva, appearing as a very old man, begging for food.
The brāhmaṇa said: After completing a seven-night vow, I am eager to break my fast and am hungry.
