प्रवालसारसंकाशं मणिसारसहस्रकम्
A thousand jewels, their essence resembling coral.
माणिक्यसारलक्षं च देयं कृष्णाय यत्नतः
A hundred thousand foremost rubies should be carefully offered to Kṛṣṇa.
कूष्माण्डं नारिकेलं च जम्बीरं श्रीफलं तथा
Kūṣmāṇḍa, coconut, citron, and śrīphala fruits as well.
रत्नेन्द्रसारलक्षं च देयं कृष्णाय यत्नतः
A hundred thousand foremost jewels should be carefully offered to Kṛṣṇa.
वाद्यं नानाप्रकारं च कांस्यतालादिकं परम्
There should be various kinds of musical instruments, especially cymbals and other such instruments of bronze.
पायसं पिष्टकं सर्पिः शर्कराक्तं मनोहरम्
Rice pudding, cakes, clarified butter, and delightful sweets made with sugar should be offered.
सुगन्धिपुष्पमालानां लक्षमक्षतमीप्सितम्
A hundred thousand fragrant garlands of flowers and the desired unbroken grains should be presented.
नैवेद्यानि च देयानि स्वादूनि मधुराणि च
Tasty and sweet offerings of food should be given as naivedya.
नानाविधानि पुष्पाणि तुलसीसंयुतानि च
Various kinds of flowers, along with tulasi leaves, should also be offered.
ब्राह्मणानां सहस्रं च प्रत्यहं भोजयेद्व्रती
The one observing the vow should feed a thousand Brahmins every day.
पुष्पाञ्जलिशतं देयं नित्यं पूर्णं च पूजने
A hundred handfuls of flowers, always full, should be offered daily in worship.
षण्मासांश्च हविष्यान्नं मासान्पञ्च फलादिकम्
For six months, sacrificial food should be given, and for five months, fruits and the like.
रत्नप्रदीपशतकं वह्निं दद्याद्दिवानिशम्
A hundred jeweled lamps should be offered to the fire both day and night.
स्मरणं कीर्त्ततं केलिः प्रेक्षणं गुह्यभाषणम्
Remembrance, praise, play, gazing, and secret speech are to be performed.
स्वप्नमैथुनकं त्याज्यं व्रतिना व्रतशुद्धये
The vow-observer should renounce sexual intercourse in dreams for the purity of the vow.
त्रिशतं वै षष्ट्यधिकं रल्लकं वस्त्रसंयुतम्
Three hundred and sixty garments, along with cloth, should be given.
त्रिशतं वै षष्ट्यधिकसहस्रं विप्रभोजनम्
Three hundred and sixty thousand Brahmins should be fed.
त्रिशतं वै षष्ट्यधिकं सहस्रं स्वर्णमेव च
Three hundred and sixty thousand pieces of gold should also be given.
अन्यां समाप्तिदिवसे कथयिष्यामि दक्षिणाम्
On the day of completion, I will tell you about another gift.
हरितुल्यो भवेत्पुत्रो विख्यातो भुवनत्रये
A son will be born equal to Hari, renowned in all three worlds.
सर्ववाञ्छितसिद्धीनां बीजं जन्मनि जन्मनि
In every birth, this is the seed of the attainment of all desired accomplishments.
पुत्रस्ते भविता साध्वीत्युक्त्वा स विरराम ह
"A virtuous son will be born to you," saying this, he became silent.
नारायण उवाच पुनः पप्रच्छ कान्तं सा दिव्यां व्रतकथां शुभाम्
Nārāyaṇa said: Again, she asked her beloved about that divine and auspicious vow-story.
श्रीपार्वत्युवाच अधिकां तत्कथां ब्रूहि व्रतं केन प्रकाशितम्
Śrī Pārvatī said: Tell me more of that story—by whom was this vow revealed?
अथ पुण्यकव्रतकथा शतरूपा मनोः पत्नी पुत्रदुःखेन दुःखिता
Now, the story of the meritorious vow: Śatarūpā, wife of Manu, was distressed by the sorrow of her children.
शतरूपोवाच तन्मे ब्रूहि जगद्धातः सृष्टिकारणकारण
Śatarūpā said: Tell me this, O Sustainer of the Universe, cause and origin of creation.
तज्जन्म निष्फलं ब्रह्मन्नैश्वर्य्यं धनमेव च
O Brahman, birth, lordship, and wealth are all fruitless without a son.
तपोदानोद्भवं पुण्यं जन्मांतरसुखावहम्
The merit that arises from asceticism and charity brings happiness in future births.
पुत्री पुत्रमुखं दृष्ट्वा चाश्वमेधशतोद्भवम्
A daughter, upon seeing the face of a son, obtains the fruit of a hundred Aśvamedha sacrifices.
पुत्रोत्पत्तेरुपायं वै वद मां तापसंयुताम्
Tell me the means for obtaining a son, for I am afflicted by ascetic suffering.
