तेजीयसां न दोषाय विद्यमाने युगे युगे ।। 1.10.
For the powerful, there is no fault, even if it exists in every age.
शौनक उवाच अश्विनोर्वा महाभाग किं नाम कस्य वंशजौ
Śaunaka said: O most fortunate one, what are the names of the Aśvins, and of whose lineage are they?
सोतिरुवाच तपश्चकार कृष्णस्य लक्षवर्षं हिमालिये
Sūti said: He performed austerities for Kṛṣṇa for a hundred thousand years in the Himalayas.
महातपस्वी तेजस्वी प्रज्वलन्ब्रह्मतेजसा
That great ascetic, radiant, blazed with the brilliance of Brahman.
वरं स वव्रे निर्लिप्तमात्मानं प्रकृतेः परम्
He chose as a boon to be untouched, his self beyond nature.
बभूवाकाशवाणीति कुरु दारपरिग्रहम्
He became known as Ākāśavāṇī; accept the taking of a wife.
पितॄणां मानसीं कन्यां ददौ तस्मै विधिः स्वयम्
Brahmā himself gave him the mind-born daughter of the ancestors.
यस्य स्मरणमात्रेण न भवेत्कुलिशाद्भयम्
By merely remembering her, there would be no fear even from the thunderbolt.
कल्याणमित्रजननीं परित्यज्य महामुनिः
Abandoning Kalyāṇamitrā, the mother, the great sage—
स सोदरश्च वा पूज्यो भवेति च सुराधम
Whether he is a brother or not, he should be honored, O best of gods.
इत्युक्त्वा सुतपा गेहं प्रतस्थे सूनुना सह 1.11.
Having spoken thus, Sutapa set out for his home together with his son.
पुत्राभ्यां व्याधियुक्ताभ्यां सूर्य्यस्त्रिजगतां पतिः
With his two sons afflicted by disease, the Sun, lord of the three worlds,
सूर्य्य उवाच मम पुत्रापराधं च भारद्वाज मुनीश्वर
The Sun spoke: O Bharadvāja, chief among sages, regarding my sons' offense,
ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशाद्याः सुराः सर्वे च सन्ततम्
Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesha, and all the gods always,
ब्राह्मणावाहिता देवाः शश्वद्विश्वेषु पूजिताः
The gods are devoted to the Brahmin, and are ever worshipped in all worlds.
ब्राह्मणे परितुष्टे च तुष्टो नारायणः स्वयम्
When the Brahmin is satisfied, Narayana himself is pleased.
नास्ति गङ्गासमं तीर्थं न च कृष्णात्परः सुरः
There is no holy place equal to the Ganga, nor any god greater than Krishna.
न च सत्यात्परो धर्मो न साध्वी पार्वतीपरा
There is no dharma higher than truth, nor any virtuous woman greater than Parvati.
न च व्याधिसमः शत्रुर्न च पूज्यो गुरोः परः
There is no enemy equal to disease, nor anyone to be honored more than the guru.
एकादशीव्रतान्नान्यत्तपो नानशनात्परम्
There is no austerity greater than the vow of Ekadashi, nor any fast superior to it.
सर्वाश्रमैः परो विप्रो नास्ति विप्रसमो गुरुः 1.11.
Among all the orders of life, the Brahmin is supreme; there is no teacher equal to the Brahmin.
सूर्य्यस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा भारद्वाजो ननाम तम्
Hearing the words of the Sun, Bharadvāja bowed to him.
पश्चाच्च तव पुत्रौ च यज्ञभाजौ भविष्यतः
Afterwards, your two sons will become recipients of sacrifice.
जगाम गङ्गां संत्रस्तो हरिसेवनतत्परः
He went to the Ganga, anxious, intent upon service to Hari.
बभूवतुस्तौ पूज्यौ च यज्ञभाजौ द्विजाशिषा विप्रपादप्रसादेन सर्वत्र विजयी भवेत्
Those two became honored and recipients of sacrifice by the blessing of the twice-born; by the grace of the Brahmin's feet, one becomes victorious everywhere.
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो नम इति प्रातरुत्थाय यः पठेत्
Whoever, rising in the morning, recites 'Salutations to the Brahmins,'
पृथिव्यां यानि तीर्थानि तानि तीर्थानि सागरे
All the holy places on earth are also in the ocean.
विप्रपादोदकं पीत्वा यावत्तिष्ठति मेदिनी
By drinking water from the Brahmin's feet, as long as the earth endures,
विप्रपादोदकं पुण्यं भक्तियुक्तश्च यः पिबेत्
Whoever drinks the sacred water from a brāhmaṇa’s feet with devotion—
महारोगी यदि पिबेद्विप्रपादोदकं द्विज
If even a person afflicted with severe disease drinks the water from a brāhmaṇa’s feet, O twice-born—
