सुगन्धिकुसुमाश्लेषिवायुना सुरभीकृते
Made fragrant by the wind embracing sweet-scented flowers,
दृष्ट्वा तयोस्तच्छृङ्गारं चिन्तां प्रापुः सुराः पराम्
Seeing their amorous play, the gods fell into deep anxiety.
तं नत्वा कथयामास ब्रह्मा वृत्तान्तमीप्सितम्
Having bowed to him, Brahmā began to relate the desired account.
ब्रह्मोवाच रतौ रतश्च निश्चेष्टो न योगी विरराम ह
Brahmā said: In the act of union, he remained motionless, and the yogi did not desist.
मैथुनस्य विरामे च दम्पत्योर्जगदीश्वर
O Lord of the universe, when the union of the couple ceased,
श्रीभगवानुवाच मयि ये शरणापन्नास्तेषां दुखं कुतो विधे
The Blessed Lord said: For those who have taken refuge in me, how can there be suffering?
येनोपायेन तद्वीर्यं भूमौ पतति निश्चितम्
By whatever means, that seed certainly falls to the earth.
यदा च शम्भोर्वीर्य्यं तत्पार्वत्या उदरे पतेत्
And when Śambhu's seed falls into Pārvatī's womb,
ततः शक्रादयः सर्वे सुरा नारायणाज्ञया
Then all the gods, beginning with Śakra, by the command of Nārāyaṇa,
तत्रैव पर्वतद्रोणीबहिर्देशे सुराः पराः
Right there, outside the hollow of the mountain, the exalted gods...
शक्रो राजा कुबेरं च कुबेरो वरुणं तथा
Śakra, the king, and Kubera, Kubera and Varuṇa as well,
हुताशनं यमश्चैव भास्करं च हुताशनः
Hutāśana and Yama, and Bhāskara, and Hutāśana again,
एवं देवाः प्रेरयन्ति देवांश्च रतिभञ्जने
Thus the gods direct the other gods in the breaking of pleasure.
द्वारि स्थितो वक्रशिराः शक्रः प्राह महेश्वरम्
Standing at the door, with a crooked head, Śakra spoke to Maheśvara.
इन्द्र उवाच जगदीश जगद्बीज भक्तानां भयभञ्जन
Indra said: Lord of the world, seed of the world, destroyer of the fears of devotees,
हरिर्जगामेत्युक्त्वा तमाजगाम च भास्करः
Hari came, as spoken, and Bhāskara also arrived.
श्रीसूर्य्य उवाच सुरश्रेष्ठ महाभाग पार्वतीश नमोऽस्तु ते
Śrī Sūrya said: O best of gods, greatly fortunate, lord of Pārvatī, salutations to you.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा श्रीसूर्य्यः स जगाम भयात्ततः
Having spoken thus, Śrī Sūrya departed from there out of fear.
चन्द्र उवाच आत्माराम स्वयंपूर्ण पुण्यश्रवणकीर्त्तन
Candra said: Self-delighting, self-complete, whose hearing and praise are holy,
पवन उवाच धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाणां बीजरूप सनातन
Pavana said: Ancient seed-form of dharma, artha, kāma, and mokṣa,
इत्येवं स्तवनं श्रुत्वा योगज्ञानविशारदः
Having heard such praise, the one skilled in yoga and knowledge,
दृष्ट्वा सुरान्भयार्त्तश्च पुनः स्तोतुं समुद्यतान्
Seeing the gods afflicted by fear and again preparing to praise,
उत्तिष्ठतो महेशस्य त्रासलज्जायुतस्य च
As Maheśa rose, filled with fear and shame,
पश्चात्तां कथयिष्यामि कथामतिमनोहराम्
Afterwards, I will tell that exceedingly delightful story.
नारायण उवाच पलायध्वमिति प्राह कृपया पार्वतीभयात्
Nārāyaṇa said: Out of compassion, he said, 'Flee,' because of fear of Pārvatī.
देवाः पलायिता भीताः पार्वतीशापहेतुना
The gods fled, afraid, due to the curse of the lord of Pārvatī.
तल्पादुत्थाय सा दुर्गा न च दृष्ट्वा पुरस्सुरान्
Rising from the couch, Durgā did not see the gods before her.
अद्यप्रभृति ते देवा व्यर्थवीर्य्या भवन्त्विति
From today onward, let those gods become powerless.
ततः शिवः शिवां दृष्ट्वा क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनाम्
Then Shiva, seeing Shiva with eyes reddened by anger—
शिवस्तां दुःखितां दृष्ट्वा क्रोधसंरक्तलोचनाम्
Shiva, seeing her distressed, her eyes inflamed with wrath—
