Salutations to Shri Ganesha. Salutations to the revered Guru. Having bowed to Narayana and also to the best among men—
Narada said: The most excellent and desired, and the increase of knowledge for the ignorant—
Now, I have come here to listen to the section about Shri Ganesha.
How was the best among the gods born in the auspicious womb of Parvati?
And whose portion was he, of which deity, and how did he obtain birth?
What was that Brahma-power, and what was his valor?
How was his worship performed first among all the worlds?
His birth is described as hidden in the Puranas.

He made a bed for pleasure, adorned with flowers and sandalwood paste.
For a thousand divine years, O Nārada, by the reckoning of the gods,
By merely touching the body of Durgā, Śiva was overcome with faintness from love.
In a place filled with swans and waterfowl, resounding with the calls of male cuckoos,
Made fragrant by the wind embracing sweet-scented flowers,
Seeing their amorous play, the gods fell into deep anxiety.

Brahmā said: In the act of union, he remained motionless, and the yogi did not desist.
O Lord of the universe, when the union of the couple ceased,
The Blessed Lord said: For those who have taken refuge in me, how can there be suffering?
