भद्रकाली जगन्माता खड्गखर्पर धारिणी
Bhadrakālī, the mother of the universe, bearing a sword and skull-bowl,
सा सहस्रभुजा देवी मुण्डमालाविभूषणा
That goddess, adorned with a garland of skulls, possesses a thousand arms.
सप्ततालप्रमाणाश्च यस्या दन्ता भयानकाः
Her terrifying teeth are each the size of seventy tāla trees.
अतीव रौद्रा सन्नद्धा भीमाः शंकरकिंकराः
Utterly fierce, armored, and formidable are Śaṅkara’s attendants.
शिवस्य पार्षदाः सर्वं महाबलपराक्रमाः
All are Śiva’s companions, endowed with immense strength and valor.
सहस्रमूर्ध्नः शेषस्य फणामण्डलभूषणम्
Adorned with the circle of hoods from the thousand-headed Śeṣa,
कालाग्निरुद्रः संहर्त्ता यस्य शम्भोश्च किंकरः
Kālāgnirudra, the destroyer, is an attendant of Śambhu.
यस्य पाशुपतास्त्रेण दुर्निवार्येण पुत्रकाः
By whose Pāśupata weapon, impossible to withstand, O sons—
यस्य शूलेन भिन्नश्च शङ्खचूडः प्रतापवान्
By whose spear, the mighty Śaṅkhacūḍa was split apart.
त्रिकोटिसूर्य्यसदृशस्तेजस्वी परमाद्भुतः 2.61.
He is radiant like three crore suns, wondrous and supremely brilliant.
मधुकैटभयोर्हन्ता हिरण्यकशिपोश्च यः
He is the slayer of Madhu and Kaitabha, and also of Hiraṇyakaśipu.
इत्युक्त्वा जगतां धाता विरराम च संसदि
Having spoken thus, the creator of the worlds fell silent in the assembly.
प्रह्राद उवाच सर्वपूज्यः सर्वनाथः किं वक्ष्यामि तवाग्रतः
Prahlada said: How can I speak before you, who are worshipped by all and lord of all?
हिरण्यकशिपोर्हन्ता मधुकैटभयोश्च यः
He who destroyed Hiranyakashipu and Madhukaidabha.
सर्वान्तरात्मनस्तस्य चक्रं नाम सुदर्शनम्
His Sudarshana discus is the name of the inner soul of all.
ततो न बलवाञ्छम्भुर्न च पाशुपतं विधे
Therefore, neither Shambhu nor the Pashupata weapon is stronger.
यस्य लोमसु विश्वानि निखिलानि जगत्पते
O Lord of the universe, in whose hairs all worlds reside.
षोडशांशो भगवतः स चैव हि महान्विराट्
He is the great Virat, the sixteenth portion of the Blessed One.
आगच्छन्तु सुराः सर्वे युद्धं कुर्वन्तु साम्प्रतम्
Let all the gods come now and wage battle.
नमस्तस्मै भगवते शिवाय शिवरूपिणे 2.61.
Salutations to that Blessed One, Shiva, who embodies auspiciousness.
श्रीकृष्णस्य प्रसादेन निर्भयोऽहं निरामयः
By the grace of Shri Krishna, I am fearless and free from affliction.
स्वपापेन मृतस्तातो पुरा वै विष्णुनिन्दया
My father died by his own sin, long ago, due to blasphemy against Vishnu.
त्रिपुरः किङ्करोऽस्माकं वीरत्वेन न गण्यते
Tripura is our servant; his valor is not considered.
इत्युक्त्वा दानवश्रेष्ठो विरराम च संसदि
Having spoken thus, the foremost of the Danavas became silent in the assembly.
ब्रह्मोवाच सुप्रीत्या चरणं वत्स सर्वमङ्गलकारणम्
Brahma said: With great affection, child, touch the feet, the source of all auspiciousness.
तारां भिक्षां देहि मह्यं भिक्षुकाय च वेधसे
Give Tara as alms to me, the beggar and the creator.
सनत्कुमार उवाच यस्य भिक्षुर्जगद्धाता तस्य कीर्तेश्च का कथा
Sanatkumara said: When the creator of the world is a beggar, what can be said of his fame?
सनातन उवाच रक्षितः कृष्णचक्रेण वैष्णवः पुण्यवाञ्छुचिः
Sanatana said: Protected by Krishna's discus, the Vaishnava is virtuous and pure.
सनन्दन उवाच गुरुश्च वैष्णवः शुक्रः स च केन जितो महान्
Sanandana said: The guru, Vaishnava Shukra, how was that great one defeated?
सनक उवाच पुण्यदीपो न निर्वाति पाषण्डेनैव वायुना ।। 2.61.
Sanaka said: The lamp of virtue is not extinguished by the wind of heresy.
