कृतार्थं कर्तुमीशा मां युष्माकं स्वागतं शिशुम् 2.61.
O Lords, I am here to fulfill your purpose and to welcome the child.
पवित्रं कर्तुमीशा मां हेतुरागमनेऽत्र वः
O Lords, my coming here is for the sake of making you pure.
ब्रह्मोवाच विच्छेदः पुत्रपौत्राणां मरणादतिरिच्यते
Brahmā said: The separation of sons and grandsons by death is exceedingly grievous.
कुशलं ते मुनिश्रेष्ठ पुत्रयोश्चापि योषितः
O best of sages, may there be welfare for your sons and their wives.
दिने दिनेऽपरिच्छन्नं श्रीकृष्णार्चनमीप्सितम्
Daily, uninterrupted worship of Śrī Kṛṣṇa is desired.
गुर्विष्टयोः पूजनं च सर्वमङ्गलकारणम्
The worship of the guru and the beloved is the cause of all auspiciousness.
अभीष्टदेवः सन्तुष्टो गुरौ तुष्टे नृणामिह
When the guru is pleased, the cherished deity is satisfied with people here.
गुरुर्विप्रः सुरो रुष्टो येषां पातकिनामिह
The guru, the brāhmaṇa, or the god, if angered, brings sin upon people here.
तुष्टश्च सततं वत्स श्रीकृष्णः प्रकृतेः परः
But, dear one, Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who is beyond nature, is always pleased.
साम्प्रतं शृणु मे धीमन्नत्रागमनकारणम् 2.61.
Now, listen to me, O wise one, regarding the reason for my coming here.
शिवस्य गुरुपुत्रस्य साध्वीं तारां बृहस्पतेः
The virtuous Tārā, wife of Bṛhaspati, the son of the guru of Śiva—
शम्भुर्धर्मश्च सूर्य्यश्च शक्रोऽनन्तश्च पुत्रक
Śambhu, Dharma, Sūrya, Śakra, and Ananta, O son,
युद्धायायान्ति सन्नद्धास्तिस्रः कोट्यश्च देवताः
Three crore gods, fully armed, are coming for battle.
भूताः प्रेताः पिशाचाश्च कूष्माण्डा ब्रह्मराक्षसाः
Beings, pretas, piśācas, kūṣmāṇḍas, and brahmarākṣasas—
तारकामयसंग्रामे मध्यस्थो ऽहं सुतैः सह
In the battle with Tāraka, I stood neutral together with my sons.
शुक्र उवाच योत्स्ये विना महेशं च सर्वेषां च गुरुं परम्
Śukra said: I will fight, excluding Maheśa and the supreme Guru of all.
दैत्या ऊचुः धर्मश्च साक्षी सर्वेषां त्वमेव च पितामहः
The Daityas said: Dharma is the witness for all, and you alone are the grandfather.
अन्यांश्च तृणतुल्यांश्च नहि मन्यामहे वयम्
We do not regard the others as anything more than grass.
कृपया गुरुपुत्रस्य यद्यायाति महेश्वरः
If Maheśvara comes out of compassion for the Guru’s son—
ब्रह्मोवाच हे वत्सास्तेन सार्द्धं च को वा युद्धं करिष्यति ।। 2.61.
Brahmā said: O children, who indeed will wage war along with him?
भद्रकाली जगन्माता खड्गखर्पर धारिणी
Bhadrakālī, the mother of the universe, bearing a sword and skull-bowl,
सा सहस्रभुजा देवी मुण्डमालाविभूषणा
That goddess, adorned with a garland of skulls, possesses a thousand arms.
सप्ततालप्रमाणाश्च यस्या दन्ता भयानकाः
Her terrifying teeth are each the size of seventy tāla trees.
अतीव रौद्रा सन्नद्धा भीमाः शंकरकिंकराः
Utterly fierce, armored, and formidable are Śaṅkara’s attendants.
शिवस्य पार्षदाः सर्वं महाबलपराक्रमाः
All are Śiva’s companions, endowed with immense strength and valor.
सहस्रमूर्ध्नः शेषस्य फणामण्डलभूषणम्
Adorned with the circle of hoods from the thousand-headed Śeṣa,
कालाग्निरुद्रः संहर्त्ता यस्य शम्भोश्च किंकरः
Kālāgnirudra, the destroyer, is an attendant of Śambhu.
यस्य पाशुपतास्त्रेण दुर्निवार्येण पुत्रकाः
By whose Pāśupata weapon, impossible to withstand, O sons—
यस्य शूलेन भिन्नश्च शङ्खचूडः प्रतापवान्
By whose spear, the mighty Śaṅkhacūḍa was split apart.
त्रिकोटिसूर्य्यसदृशस्तेजस्वी परमाद्भुतः 2.61.
He is radiant like three crore suns, wondrous and supremely brilliant.
