वचनेषु च बुद्धौ च स्वभावे च चरित्रतः
In words, in intellect, in nature, and in conduct—
यादृग्येषां च हदये तादृक्तेषां च मंगलम्
As is their heart, so is their good fortune.
इत्युक्त्वा च महादेवो विरराम स्वसंसदि
Having spoken thus, Mahadeva fell silent in his own assembly.
बृहस्पतिरुवाच लोकाः कर्मवशान्नित्यं नानाजन्मसु यत्कृतम्
Brihaspati said: People, bound by karma, continually experience the results of actions performed in various births.
स्वकर्मणां फलं भुङ्क्ते जन्तुर्जन्मनि जन्मनि
A living being enjoys the fruit of its own actions, birth after birth.
केचिद्वदन्ति दैवेन स्वभावेनेति केचन
Some say it is due to fate, others say it is due to one's own nature.
स्वयं च कर्मजनकः कर्म वै दैवकारणम्
Action itself is the originator of deeds; indeed, action is caused by destiny.
स्वकर्मणां च सर्वेषां जन्तूनां प्रतिजन्मनि
For every creature, in each birth, their own actions determine their fate.
स्वकर्मफलभोक्ता च जीवो हि सगुणः सदा 2.60.
The soul, always endowed with qualities, is the enjoyer of the fruits of its own actions.
स एवात्मा सर्वसेव्यः सर्वेषां च फलप्रदः
That very Self is to be served by all, and grants the results to everyone.
कर्मणा च नृणां लज्जा प्रशंसा च प्रफुल्लता
Through actions, people experience shame, praise, and blossoming joy.
जपमाला कराद्भ्रष्टा कोपाविष्टस्य शूलिनः
The rosary slipped from the hand of the trident-bearing one, overcome by anger.
संहर्त्तुरीशो रुद्रस्य विष्णोः पातुः सखा शिवः
Shiva, the friend of Vishnu, is the lord of destruction and protector.
निर्गुणस्य च कृष्णस्य प्रकृतीशस्य नारद
O Narada, Shiva is the friend of Krishna, who is beyond qualities and lord of nature.
शिव उवाच अवैष्णवानामसतामशिवं च पदे पदे
Shiva said: For those who are non-Vaishnavas and unrighteous, there is inauspiciousness at every step.
ददाति वैष्णवेभ्यश्च यो दुःखं सुस्थितो जनः
Anyone who, being well-established, gives suffering to Vaishnavas—
अवैष्णवानां हृदयं नहि शुद्धं सदामलम्
The heart of non-Vaishnavas is never pure and spotless.
भिद्यते हदयग्रन्थिश्छिद्यन्ते सर्वसंशयाः 2.60.
The knot of the heart is broken, and all doubts are cut away.
अहो श्रीकृष्णदासानां कः स्वभावः सुनिर्मलः
Ah, what a supremely pure nature belongs to the servants of Sri Krishna!
गुरुर्यस्य वरिष्ठश्च क्रोधहीनश्च धार्मिकः
He whose teacher is eminent, free from anger, and righteous—
निश्श्वासाद्वै सुरगुरोर्भ्रातुर्मम बृहस्पतेः
From the breath of my brother, the guru of the gods, Brihaspati—
तथाऽपि तं नो शशाप धर्म्मभङ्गभयेन च
Yet, even so, he cursed him out of fear of violating righteousness.
अहो ह्यत्रेरसत्पुत्रः परस्त्रीलुब्धकः शठः
Ah, Atri's unrighteous son is greedy for another's wife and deceitful.
धर्मिष्ठा ब्रह्मणः पुत्रा वैष्णवा ब्राह्मणास्तथा
The sons of Brahma who are devoted to righteousness, as well as Vaishnava Brahmanas.
ये सात्त्विका ब्राह्मणास्ते देवा राजसिकास्तथा
Those Brāhmaṇas who are sāttvika are like the gods, and those who are rājasika are likewise.
स्वधर्मनिरता विप्रा नारायणपरायणाः
The Brāhmaṇas who are devoted to their own duty and dedicated to Nārāyaṇa.
मुमुक्षवो विष्णुभक्ता ब्राह्मणा दास्यलिप्सवः
Brāhmaṇas who seek liberation, who are devoted to Viṣṇu, and who desire to serve.
ब्राह्मणानां स्वधर्मश्च कृष्णस्यार्च्चनमीप्सितम् 2.60.
The own duty of Brāhmaṇas is the worship of Kṛṣṇa, which is desired.
ये ब्राह्मणा वैष्णवाश्च स्वतन्त्राः परमं पदम्
Those Brāhmaṇas who are Vaiṣṇavas and independent attain the supreme state.
वर्णानां ब्राह्मणाः श्रेष्ठाः साधवो वैष्णवा यदि
Among the classes, Brāhmaṇas are the best, especially if they are virtuous Vaiṣṇavas.
