नाभुक्तं क्षीयते कर्म्म कल्पकोटिशतैरपि
Unexperienced karma does not perish, even in hundreds of millions of kalpas.
जगद्गुरोः शिवस्यापि गुरुपुत्रो बृहस्पतिः
Bṛhaspati, the son of the teacher, is also the teacher of Shiva, the lord of the world.
सर्वे समूहा देवानां सन्नद्धाश्च सवाहनाः
All the hosts of the gods, fully armed and with their vehicles, were assembled.
पश्चादहं च यास्यामि पुण्यं तन्नर्म्मदातटम्
Afterwards, I too shall go to that holy bank of the Narmada.
महेन्द्र उवाच मृत्युञ्जयस्य शम्भोश्च गुरुपुत्रो बृहस्पतिः ।। 2.59.
Mahendra said: The son of the preceptor, Bṛhaspati, is of Mṛtyuñjaya Śambhu.
अङ्गिरास्तव पुत्रश्च तत्पुत्रश्च बृहस्पतिः
Aṅgirā is your son, and his son is Bṛhaspati.
ब्रह्मोवाच इमां पुराप्रवृत्तिं च कथयामि निशामय
Brahmā said: Listen, I shall tell you this ancient account.
मृतवत्सा कर्म्मदोषाद्भार्य्या चाङ्गिरसः पुरा
Once, due to a fault in ritual action, the wife of Aṅgirā lost her child.
व्रतं पुंसवनं नाम वर्षमेकं चकार सा
She performed the rite called Puṃsavana for one year.
तदाऽऽगत्य च गोलोकात्परमात्मा कृपामयः
Then, the Supreme Self, full of compassion, came from Goloka.
सुव्रतां च सलक्ष्मीकां तामुवाच कृपानिधिः
The treasure of mercy spoke to her, who was virtuous and adorned with fortune.
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच भुंक्ष्व मद्वरतः पुत्रि भविष्यति मदंशतः
Śrī Kṛṣṇa said: Enjoy my boon, daughter; a son endowed with my portion will be born.
पतिर्गुरुश्च देवानां महतां ज्ञानिनां वरः
Your husband will be the preceptor of the gods, foremost among the great and the wise.
मद्वरेण भवेद्यो हि स च मद्वरपुत्रकः
By my boon, he will be; and he will be my boon-born son.
वरजो वीर्य्यजश्चैव क्षेत्रजः पालकस्तथा 2.59.
Born of a boon, born of energy, and also born of the field, he will be the protector.
इत्युक्त्वा राधिकानाथः स्वलोकं च जगाम सः मृत्युञ्जयं महाज्ञानं शिवाय प्रददौ पुरा
Having spoken thus, the Lord of Rādhā returned to his own abode; formerly, he gave the great knowledge of Mṛtyuñjaya to Śiva.
दिव्यं वर्षत्रिलक्षं च तपश्चक्रे हिमालये स्वशक्तिं विष्णुमायां च स्वांशं वै वाहनं वृषम्
He performed divine austerity for three hundred thousand years in the Himalaya, along with his own power, Viṣṇu's māyā, his own portion, and his vehicle, the bull.
स्वशूलं च स्वकवचं स्वमन्त्रं द्वादशाक्षरम् शिवलोके शिवा सा च विष्णुमाया शिवप्रिया
His own trident, his own armor, his own twelve-syllabled mantra— in Śiva's world, that goddess was Viṣṇu's māyā, beloved of Śiva.
शक्तिर्नारायणस्येयं साऽऽविर्भूता सनातनी
This eternal power of Nārāyaṇa manifested herself.
जघान दैत्यनिकरं देवेभ्यः प्रददौ पदम्
She destroyed the host of demons and granted position to the gods.
पितृयज्ञे तनुं त्यक्त्वा योगाद्वै सिद्धयोगिनी
Having abandoned her body at the ancestral sacrifice, through yoga, she became a perfected yogini.
कालेन कृष्णतपसा शङ्करं प्राप सुन्दरी।। श्रीकृष्णो हि गुरुः शम्भोः परमात्मा परात्परः
In time, by the austerity of Krishna, Sundarī attained Śaṅkara; for Śrī Krishna is indeed the teacher of Śambhu, the Supreme Soul, transcending even the highest.
कृष्णस्य वरपुत्रोऽयं स्वयमेव बृहस्पतिः
This Bṛhaspati is himself the blessed son of Krishna.
इत्येवं कथितं सर्वमतिगुह्यं पुरातनम्
Thus, all this has been spoken, the most secret and ancient.
पारंपरिकमन्यं च कथयामि निशामय 2.59.
I will tell you another traditional account; listen attentively.
शिष्यौ चांगिरसस्तौ द्वौ गुरुपुत्रोऽथवा ततः
Those two were the disciples of Āṅgiras, or else the sons of the teacher.
स्वज्ञानं स्वं च भगवान्विसस्मार स्वमोहतः
The Blessed Lord recalled his own knowledge and his own self, from his own delusion.
अतो हेतोर्गुरुश्चैवं मत्सुतस्स्याच्छिवस्य सः
For this reason, the teacher thus became the son of mine and of Śiva.
त्वं गच्छ तत्र सन्नद्धः सदेवो नर्मदातटम्
Go there, prepared, along with the gods, to the bank of the Narmadā.
गुरुर्ययौ च कैलासं महेन्द्रो नर्मदातटम्
The teacher went to Kailāsa, and Mahendra to the bank of the Narmadā.
