तस्मादुत्तीर्य्य चाण्डालीं योनिमाप्नोति पातकी
Therefore, having passed from there, the sinner attains the birth of a caṇḍāla woman.
एकादश्यां च यो भुङ्क्ते कृष्णजन्माष्टमीदिने
Whoever eats on Ekādaśī or on the day of Kṛṣṇa's birth (Janmāṣṭamī)—
स यातु कुम्भीपाकं च यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
He shall go to Kumbhīpāka as long as there are fourteen Indras.
ताम्रस्थं दुग्धमाध्वीकमुच्छिष्टे घृतमेव च
Milk, honey, or ghee left in a copper vessel—
पीतशेष जलं चैव भुक्तशेषं तथौदनम्
Water left after drinking, and rice left after eating—
तं यातु चन्द्रपापं च दुर्निवारं च दारुणम्
He shall go to Candrapāpa, which is dreadful and hard to escape.
स्वकन्याविक्रयी विप्रो देवलो वृषवाहकः
A brāhmaṇa who sells his own daughter, a false ascetic, a bull-driver—
अश्वत्थतरुघाती च विष्णुवैष्णवनिन्दकः
One who cuts down an aśvattha tree, or blasphemes Viṣṇu or his devotees—
स यातु तस्मात्पापाच्च तप्तसूर्मीं च पातकी
That sinner, because of those sins, shall go to the hell of heated sand.
तस्मादुतीर्य्य चाण्डालीं योनिमाप्नोति पातकी 2.58.
Therefore, having passed from there, the sinner attains the birth of a caṇḍāla woman.
गर्दभो जन्मशतकं सूकरस्सप्तजन्मसु जलौका जन्मशतकं शुचिर्भवतु तत्परम्
Let him be born a donkey for a hundred births, a pig for seven births, and a leech for a hundred births; let him be purified after that.
वृथा मांसं च यो भुङ्क्ते स्वार्थं पाकान्नमेव च
Whoever eats meat or cooked food merely for his own pleasure—
स यातु चन्द्रपापेन चासिपत्रं चतुर्युगम्
Let him go to the moon's sin and to the sword-leaf hell for four ages.
विप्रो वार्धुषिको यो हि योनिजीवी चिकित्सकः
A Brahmin who is a barber, one who lives by birth-based occupations, or a physician—
स्वधर्मकथकश्चैव यश्च स्वात्मप्रशंसकः
One who recites his own virtues or praises himself—
तं यातु चन्द्रपापं च चन्द्रो भवतु विज्वरः
Let him go to the moon's sin, and let the moon become free from fever.
तत्र विद्धो भवतु स यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
Let him be pierced there as long as the fourteen Indras exist.
लाक्षामांसरसानां च तिलानां लवणस्य च
Those who deal in lac, meat, juices, sesame seeds, or salt—
विप्रः कुलालः चौरश्च यातु तं चन्द्रपातकम्
A Brahmin potter or a thief—let him go to the moon's downfall.
तत्र च्छिन्नो भवतु स यावदिन्द्रसहस्रकम् 2.58.
Let him be cut there as long as a thousand Indras exist.
सप्तजन्मसु मार्जारो महिषो जन्मपञ्चकम्
Let him be a cat for seven births, a buffalo for five births—
मत्स्यत्वे जन्मशतकं कर्कटी जन्मपञ्चकम्
Let him be born as a fish for a hundred births, a crab for five births—
नाविकः शवजीवी च व्याधश्च स्वर्णकारकः
A boatman, one who lives off corpses, a hunter, or a goldsmith—
इति चन्द्रं शुचिं कृत्वा समुवाच तु तारकाम्
Thus, having made the moon pure, he then spoke to Tārakā.
प्रायश्चित्तं विना पूता त्वमेवं शुद्धमानसा
Without atonement, you are purified, your mind thus made pure.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा शुक्रश्च चन्द्रं वा तारकां सतीम्
Having spoken thus, Śukra addressed either the moon or the virtuous Tārakā.
नारद उवाच कथं संप्राप तां साध्वीं तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि
Nārada said: How did he obtain that virtuous woman? Please explain that to me.
श्रीनारायण उवाच प्रस्थापयामास शिष्यमन्वेषार्थं च जाह्नवीम्
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: He sent his disciple to search for Jāhnavī.
शिष्यो गत्वा च तद्वत्तं ज्ञात्वा वै लोकवक्त्रतः
The disciple, having gone there, learned of the matter from the words of the people.
श्रुत्वा सुरगुरुर्वार्तां शशिना च प्रियां हृताम्
Hearing the news that his beloved had been taken away by the moon, the preceptor of the gods was distressed.
