इत्युक्त्वा वै दैत्यगुरुः स्वर्गे मन्दाकिनीतटे 2.58.
Having spoken thus, the teacher of the demons, on the bank of the Mandākinī in heaven,
विष्णुपादाब्जजातेन तन्नैवेद्यं शुभप्रदम्
The offering born from the lotus feet of Viṣṇu brings auspiciousness.
क्रोडे कृत्वा तु तं भीतं सज्जितं पापकर्मणा
Having placed the fearful one, prepared for sinful deeds, on his lap,
शुक्र उवाच सत्यं व्रतफलं चैव सत्यं सत्यवचः फलम्
Śukra said: Truth is the fruit of vows, and truth is the fruit of truthful speech.
तीर्थस्नानफलं सत्यं सत्यं दानफलं यदि
The fruit of bathing at holy places is truth, and so is the fruit of giving, if it is truth.
विप्रं त्रिसन्ध्याहीनं या विष्णुपूजाविही नकम्
A Brahmin who neglects the three sandhyā rituals and is devoid of Viṣṇu worship,
स्वभार्य्यावञ्चनं कृत्वा यः प्रयाति परस्त्रियम्
He who deceives his own wife and goes to another woman,
वाचा वा ताडयेत्कान्तं दुश्शीला दुर्मुखा च या
Or who strikes his beloved with words, if she is immoral or ill-tempered,
अनैवेद्यं वृथान्नं च यश्च भुङ्क्ते हरेर्द्विजः
And the twice-born who eats food not offered to Hari, or useless food,
अम्बुवाच्यं भूखननं यः करोति नरा धमः
He who performs water rituals or digs the earth, O man of Dharma,
स्वकान्तं वञ्चयित्वा च या याति परपूरुषम् 2.58.
She who deceives her own husband and goes to another man,
कीर्त्तिं करोति रजसा परकीर्त्तिं विलुप्य च
He creates his own fame with passion, having destroyed the fame of another.
पितरं मातरं भार्य्यां यो न पुष्णाति पातकी
He who does not support his father, mother, or wife is a sinner.
कुलटान्नमवीरान्नमृतुस्नातान्नमेव च
Food from an adulteress, food from a coward, and food from one who has bathed after her period—
स यातु तेन पापेन कुम्भीपाकं चतुर्युगम्
He, because of that sin, shall go to Kumbhīpāka hell for four ages.
दिवसे यो ग्राम्यधर्मं महापापी करोति च
Whoever, in the daytime, commits village-dharma (sexual acts) is a great sinner.
तं यातु चन्द्रपापं च महाघोरं च पापिनम्
Let that most wicked sinner go to Candrapāpa, the terrible hell.
मुखं श्रोणीं स्तनं चापि यः पश्यति परस्त्रियाः
He who looks at the face, hips, or breasts of another man's wife—
स यातु लालाभक्षं च चन्द्रपापाच्चतुर्युगम्
He shall go to eat saliva in Candrapāpa for four ages.
कुरुते ग्राम्यधर्मं च यातु तं चन्द्रकिल्बिषम् 2.58.
Whoever engages in village-dharma shall go to Candrakilbiṣa.
तस्मादुत्तीर्य्य चाण्डालीं योनिमाप्नोति पातकी
Therefore, having passed from there, the sinner attains the birth of a caṇḍāla woman.
एकादश्यां च यो भुङ्क्ते कृष्णजन्माष्टमीदिने
Whoever eats on Ekādaśī or on the day of Kṛṣṇa's birth (Janmāṣṭamī)—
स यातु कुम्भीपाकं च यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
He shall go to Kumbhīpāka as long as there are fourteen Indras.
ताम्रस्थं दुग्धमाध्वीकमुच्छिष्टे घृतमेव च
Milk, honey, or ghee left in a copper vessel—
पीतशेष जलं चैव भुक्तशेषं तथौदनम्
Water left after drinking, and rice left after eating—
तं यातु चन्द्रपापं च दुर्निवारं च दारुणम्
He shall go to Candrapāpa, which is dreadful and hard to escape.
स्वकन्याविक्रयी विप्रो देवलो वृषवाहकः
A brāhmaṇa who sells his own daughter, a false ascetic, a bull-driver—
अश्वत्थतरुघाती च विष्णुवैष्णवनिन्दकः
One who cuts down an aśvattha tree, or blasphemes Viṣṇu or his devotees—
स यातु तस्मात्पापाच्च तप्तसूर्मीं च पातकी
That sinner, because of those sins, shall go to the hell of heated sand.
तस्मादुतीर्य्य चाण्डालीं योनिमाप्नोति पातकी 2.58.
Therefore, having passed from there, the sinner attains the birth of a caṇḍāla woman.
