The moon, terrified of the demons, sought refuge.
Out of compassion, the son of Bhrigu granted him safety.
In the assembly, the powerful sons of Diti laughed joyfully.
By the destruction of chastity, the moon's orb became most sinful.
Śukra, best of those who know the Vedas, spoke to him, who was greatly afraid.
Śukra said: Son, your deed is wicked, ignoble, and brings infamy.
In the pure and fruitful circle of royal sacrifice and fame,
Abandon the wife of the preceptor of the gods, as one casts off a flower after offering.
She is the wife of Śambhu, lord of the gods, the teacher's son, the creator.
Even the virtues of an enemy should be spoken, and the faults of a teacher as well.
That teacher of the gods is my enemy, O moon, yet where the righteous dwell, there is eternal dharma.
Where there is dharma, there is Kṛṣṇa; where there is Kṛṣṇa, there is victory.
The violent meet destruction; dharma protects the righteous.
Yet even so, dharma does not protect the destroyer of dharma, the sinful person.
The sin incurred is certainly a sixteenth part of the sin of killing a Brahmin.
If one forcibly approaches the wife of a Brahmin or a virtuous woman,
Practice righteousness, O fortunate one, and now abandon the Brahmin woman.
By means, indeed, your sin will become distant from you.
One who is weaponless, fearful, destitute, and seeking refuge,
The protector of a hundred Rājasūya sacrifices attains the fruit.
Having spoken thus, the teacher of the demons, on the bank of the Mandākinī in heaven,
The offering born from the lotus feet of Viṣṇu brings auspiciousness.
Having placed the fearful one, prepared for sinful deeds, on his lap,
Śukra said: Truth is the fruit of vows, and truth is the fruit of truthful speech.
The fruit of bathing at holy places is truth, and so is the fruit of giving, if it is truth.
A Brahmin who neglects the three sandhyā rituals and is devoid of Viṣṇu worship,
He who deceives his own wife and goes to another woman,
Or who strikes his beloved with words, if she is immoral or ill-tempered,
And the twice-born who eats food not offered to Hari, or useless food,
He who performs water rituals or digs the earth, O man of Dharma,
