कामेन कामिनी त्वं च दग्धाऽसि व्यर्थमीश्वरि
O Lady, you have been burned in vain by desire, being a woman who desires.
दिने दिने वृथा याति दुर्लभं नवयौवनम्
Day by day, precious youth passes away in vain.
शश्वत्तपस्यायुक्तश्च कृष्णमात्मानमीप्सितम् 2.58.
Always engaged in austerity, you desire Krishna as your very self.
सर्वकामरसज्ञा त्वं निष्कामं काममीप्सितम्
You, who know the essence of all pleasures, desire desire itself without desire.
अन्यश्च त्वन्मनःकामो भिन्नं त्वद्भर्तुरीप्सितम्
Another desires your mind, but what your husband wishes is different.
वासन्तीपुष्पतल्पे च गन्धचन्दन चर्चिते
On a springtime bed of flowers, adorned with fragrance and sandalwood,
सुगन्ध्युत्फुल्लकुसुमे निर्जने चन्दने वने
Among fragrant, blossoming flowers, in a solitary sandalwood forest,
चन्दने चम्पकवने शीतचम्पकवायुना
In a sandalwood and champaka grove, with the cool breeze of champaka flowers,
तारोवाच अत्रेरभाग्यात्त्वं पुत्रो व्यर्थं ते जन्म जीवनम्
Tara said: Because of Atri's misfortune, your birth and life are in vain, O son.
अरे कृत्वा राजसूयमात्मानं मन्यसे बली
Hey! Having performed the Rajasuya, you consider yourself powerful.
यस्य चित्तं परस्त्रीषु सोऽशुचिः सर्वकर्मसु ।। न कर्मफलभाक्पापी निन्द्यो विश्वेषु सर्वतः 2.58.
He whose mind is set on another's wife is impure in all actions; he is sinful, not entitled to the fruits of action, and is condemned everywhere in the world.
सतीत्वं मे नाशयसि यक्ष्मग्रस्तो भविष्यसि
You destroy my chastity; you will be afflicted with consumption.
दुष्टानां दर्पहा कृष्णो दर्पं ते निहनिष्यति
Krishna, the destroyer of the pride of the wicked, will shatter your arrogance.
इत्युक्त्वा तारका साध्वी रुरोद च मुहुर्मुहुः
Having spoken thus, the virtuous Tara wept again and again.
ब्रह्माणं परमात्मानमाकाशं पवनं धराम्
Brahma, the Supreme Self, the sky, the wind, the earth—
तारकावचनं श्रुत्वा न भीतः स चुकोप ह
Hearing Tara's words, he was not afraid, but became angry.
रथं च चालयामास मनोयायी मनोहरम्
He set the chariot in motion, traveling by mind, enchanting to behold.
विस्पन्दके सुरवने चन्दने पुष्पभद्रके
In the Vispandaka, Suravana, Candana, and Puṣpabhadraka groves,
सुगन्धि पुष्पतल्पे च पुष्पचन्दनवायुना
On a fragrant bed of flowers, with breezes of sandalwood and blossoms,
शैले शैले नदे नद्यां शृंगारं कुर्वतोस्तयोः
On every mountain, in every river, the two engaged in love-play.
बभूव शरणापन्नो भीतो दैत्येषु चन्द्रमाः 2.58.
The moon, terrified of the demons, sought refuge.
अभयं च ददौ तस्मै कृपया भृगुनन्दनः
Out of compassion, the son of Bhrigu granted him safety.
सभायां जहसुर्हृष्टा बलिनो दितिनन्दनाः
In the assembly, the powerful sons of Diti laughed joyfully.
सतीसतीत्वध्वंसेन पापिष्ठचन्द्रमण्डले
By the destruction of chastity, the moon's orb became most sinful.
उवाच तं महाभीतं शुक्रो वेदविदां वरः
Śukra, best of those who know the Vedas, spoke to him, who was greatly afraid.
शुक्र उवाच दुर्नीतं कर्म ते पुत्र नीचवन्नयशस्करम्
Śukra said: Son, your deed is wicked, ignoble, and brings infamy.
राजसूयस्य सुफले निर्मले कीर्त्तिमण्डले
In the pure and fruitful circle of royal sacrifice and fame,
त्यज देवगुरौ पत्नीं प्रसूमिव महासतीम्
Abandon the wife of the preceptor of the gods, as one casts off a flower after offering.
शम्भोः सुराणामीशस्य गुरुपुत्रस्य वेधसः
She is the wife of Śambhu, lord of the gods, the teacher's son, the creator.
शत्रोरपि गुणा वाच्या दोषा वाच्या गुरोरपि
Even the virtues of an enemy should be spoken, and the faults of a teacher as well.
