ततो भवेद्भूमिहीनः प्रजाहीनश्च मानवः
After that, he becomes a man deprived of land and offspring.
नारद उवाच स कृतघ्न इति ख्यातस्तत्फलं च निशामय
Nārada said: He is known as ungrateful; listen to the result of that.
अन्धकूपे वसेत्सोऽपि यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
He dwells in the pit of darkness for as long as fourteen Indras reign.
तप्तक्षारोदकं पापी नित्यं पिबति वै ततः 2.52.
The sinner constantly drinks water heated with copper there.
देवल उवाच स कृतघ्न इति ज्ञेयो महापापी च भारते
Devala said: He is to be known as an ingrate, a great sinner in Bharata.
अवटोदे वसेत्सोऽपि यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
He dwells in the pit for as long as fourteen Indras reign.
जैगीषव्य उवाच वाचाऽपि ताडयेत्तांश्च स कृतघ्र इति स्मृतः
Jaigīṣavya said: Even by words, if one strikes them, he is remembered as an ingrate.
सा कृतघ्नीति विख्याता भारते पापिनी वरा
She is renowned as an ingrate, O noble one, a sinner in Bharata.
तत्र वह्नौ वसत्येव यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ
There, she dwells in fire for as long as the moon and sun endure.
वाल्मीकिरुवाच तथा कृतघ्नता राजन्सर्वपापेषु वर्त्तते
Vālmīki said: Thus, ingratitude, O king, persists among all sins.
मिथ्यासाक्ष्यं यो ददाति कामात्क्रोधात्तथा भयात्
Whoever gives false testimony out of desire, anger, or fear,
पुण्यमात्रं चापि राजन्यो हन्ति स कृतघ्नकः
And even a king who destroys virtue—he is an ingrate.
मिथ्यासाक्ष्यं पाक्षिकं वा भारते वक्ति यो नृप
O king, whoever speaks false or partial testimony in Bharata,
सन्ततं वेष्टितः सर्पैर्भीतो वै भक्षितस्तथा 2.52.
He is continually surrounded by snakes, terrified, and devoured likewise.
कृकलासो भवेत्तत्र भारते सप्तजन्मसु
There, in Bharata, he becomes a lizard for seven births.
ततो भवेद्वै वृक्षश्च महारण्ये तु शाल्मलिः
After that, he becomes a śālmalī tree in the great forest.
आस्तीक उवाच नराणां मातृगमने प्रायश्चित्तं न विद्यते
Āstīka said: For men who approach their mothers, there is no expiation.
भारते च नृपश्रेष्ट यो दोषो मातृगामिनाम्
O foremost of kings, in Bharata, what is the fault of those who go to their mothers?
ब्राह्मण्यास्तावदेव स्याद्दोषः शूद्रेण मैथुने
The fault is only as much as with a Brahmin who has intercourse with a Śūdra woman.
सगर्भभ्रातृपत्नीना भगिनीनां तथैव च
So too with pregnant sisters-in-law and with sisters likewise.
यः करोति महापापी चैताभिः सह मैथुनम्
Whoever, being greatly sinful, engages in sexual union with these women,
नाधिकारो भवेत्तस्य सूर्य्यमण्डलदर्शने
has no right to behold the solar orb.
सर्वतीर्थजलं चैव विप्रपादोदकं तथा
He is unworthy of the water of all holy places and likewise of the water from a Brahmin’s feet.
दैवं गुरुं ब्राह्मणं च नमस्कर्तुं न चार्हति 2.52.
He is not fit to bow to the gods, the teacher, or a Brahmin.
देवताः पितरो विप्रा नैव गृह्णन्ति भारते
The deities, ancestors, and Brahmins do not accept offerings from him in the land of Bharata.
सप्तरात्रं ह्युपवसेद्दैवस्पर्शात्तथा द्विजः
A twice-born should fast for seven nights after such contact with the divine.
तत्पापात्पतितो देशः कन्याविक्रयिणो यथा
Because of that sin, the land falls, just as in the case of one who sells his daughter.
नृणां च तत्समं पापं भवत्येव न संशयः
And for men, that sin is equal—there is no doubt about it.
दिवानिशं भ्रमेत्तत्र चक्रावर्त्तं निरन्तरम्
Day and night, he wanders there endlessly in a whirling cycle.
एवं नित्यं महापापी भुङ्क्ते निरययातनाम्
Thus, the great sinner continually endures the torments of hell.
