पुलस्त्य उवाच दत्त्वा स्वपापं तस्मै तत्पुण्यमादाय गच्छति ।। 2.51.
Pulastya said: Having given his own sin to him, he departs, taking that person's merit.
क्षमस्व नृपदोषं च गच्छ वत्स यथासुखम्
Forgive the king's fault and go, child, as you please.
पुलह उवाच विप्रस्त्रिसन्ध्याहीनो यः श्रीहीनः क्षत्रियो भवेत्
Pulaha said: A Brahmin who neglects the three daily sandhyā rituals becomes a Kṣatriya deprived of prosperity.
एकादशीविहीनश्च विष्णुनैवेद्यवञ्चितः
One who neglects the eleventh day observance and is deprived of Viṣṇu's offering of food—
क्रतुरुवाच दीक्षाहीनो भवेत्सोऽपि ब्राह्मणं योऽवमन्यते
Kratu said: One who lacks initiation and disrespects a Brahmin—
धनहीनः पुत्रहीनो भार्य्याहीनो भवेद्ध्रुवम्
He will certainly become poor, childless, and without a wife.
अङ्गिरा उवाच वृषवाहो भवेत्सोऽपि भारते सप्तजन्मसु
Aṅgirā said: He will be an ox-bearer in Bhārata for seven births.
मरीचिरुवाच विष्णुभक्तिविहीनश्च स भवेद्योऽवमन्यते
Marīci said: One who lacks devotion to Viṣṇu and shows disrespect—
कश्यप उवाच विष्णुमन्त्रविहीनश्च तत्पूजाविरतो भवेत्
Kaśyapa said: One who lacks Viṣṇu mantras and ceases to worship Him—
प्रचेता उवाच पितृभक्तिविहीनस्स्यात्स भवेद्भारते भुवि
Pracetas said: One who lacks devotion to his ancestors will be so on the earth of Bhārata.
प्राप्नोति कौञ्जरीं योनिं स मूढः सप्तजन्मसु 2.51.
That deluded one attains the womb of a she-elephant for seven births.
दुर्वासा उवाच दृष्ट्वा शीघ्रं न प्रणमेत्स भवेत्सूकरो भुवि
Durvāsas said: Seeing but not quickly bowing, he becomes a pig on earth.
मिथ्यासाक्षी च भवति तथा विश्वासघातकः
He becomes a false witness and a betrayer of trust.
राजोवाच सर्वं कृत्वा च विस्पष्टं मां मूढं बोधयन्त्वहो
The king said: Having done everything clearly, alas, let them enlighten me, the deluded one.
स्त्रीघ्नगोघ्नकृतघ्नानां गुरुस्त्रीगामिनां तथा
For those who kill women, cows, or benefactors, and for teachers who consort with women—
वसिष्ठ उवाच यवयावकभोजी च करेण च जलं पिबेत्
Vasiṣṭha said: They should eat barley and wild grains, and drink water with their hands.
तदा धेनुशतं दिव्यं ब्राह्मणेभ्यः सदक्षिणम्
Then, a hundred divine cows with proper gifts should be given to Brahmins.
प्रायश्चित्ते तु वै चीर्णे सर्वपापान्न मुच्यते
But even after performing penance, one is not freed from all sins.
आतिदेशिकहत्यायां तदर्धं फलमश्नुते
For the indirect killing, one experiences half the result.
शुक्र उवाच षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि कालसूत्रे वसेद्ध्रुवम्
Śukra said: For six thousand years, one certainly dwells in Kālasūtra.
ततो भवेन्महापापी सूकरः सप्तजन्मसु 2.51.
After that, he becomes a great sinner, a pig, for seven births.
बृहस्पतिरुवाच लक्षवर्षं महाघोरे कुम्भीपाके वसेद्ध्रुवम्
Bṛhaspati said: For one hundred thousand years, he certainly dwells in the dreadful Kumbhīpāka.
ततो भवेन्महापापी विष्ठाकीटः शताब्दकम्
After that, he becomes a great sinner, a worm in excrement, for one hundred years.
राजोवाच कृतघ्नः कतिधा प्रोक्तः केषु को दोष एव च
The king said: In how many ways is the ungrateful one described, and in which cases, and what is the fault in each?
ऋष्यशृङ्ग उवाच सर्वः प्रत्येकदोषेण प्रत्येकं फलमश्नुते
Ṛṣyaśṛṅga said: Each one, according to each fault, experiences the corresponding result.
कृते सत्ये च पुण्ये च स्वधर्मे तपसि स्थिते
When one stands firm in truth, virtue, one's own duty, and austerity,
गुरुकृत्ये देवकृत्ये काम्यकृत्ये द्विजार्चने
In the duties toward the teacher, the gods, in desired actions, and in honoring the twice-born,
एतान्यो हन्ति पापिष्ठः स कृतघ्न इति स्मृतः
Whoever destroys these, that most sinful one is called ungrateful.
यान्यांश्च नरकांस्ते च यान्ति राजेन्द्र पापिनः
And, O king, those sinners go to whatever hells there are.
सुयज्ञ उवाच प्रत्येकं श्रोतुमिच्छामि वक्तुमर्हसि मे प्रभो 2.51.
Suyajña said: I wish to hear each one in detail; you should speak to me, O lord.
