कथं ददर्श तां देवो महालक्ष्मीं पुरा सतीम्
How did the god see her, the chaste Mahālakṣmī, in former times?
कथं त्रिजगतां धाता तस्मै तत्कवचं ददौ
How did the creator of the three worlds give him that armor?
श्रीमहादेव उवाच ब्रह्मात्मजस्तपस्वी च शतरूपापतिः प्रभुः
Śrī Mahādeva said: The ascetic son of Brahmā, the lord, was the husband of Śatarūpā.
उत्तानपादस्तत्पुत्रस्तत्पुत्रो ध्रुव एव च
Uttānapāda was his son, and his son was Dhruva.
उत्कलस्तस्य पुत्रश्च नारायणपरायणः
Utkala was his son, devoted to Nārāyaṇa.
सर्वाणि रत्नपात्राणि ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ मुदा
He joyfully gave all jeweled vessels to the brāhmaṇas.
ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ राजा यज्ञान्ते स महोत्सवे 2.50.
At the end of the sacrifice, the king gave to the brāhmaṇas during the great festival.
सुयज्ञं नाम नृपतिं चकार सुरसंसदि
In the assembly of the gods, they made the king known as Suyajña.
अन्नदाता रत्नदाता दाता वै सर्वसम्पदाम्
He was a giver of food, a giver of jewels, indeed a giver of all wealth.
नित्यं ददौ स विप्रेभ्यो मुदायुक्तः सदक्षिणम्
He always gave to the brāhmaṇas with joy, along with proper gifts.
सुपक्वानि च मांसानि ब्राह्मणेभ्यश्च पार्वति
O Pārvatī, he gave well-cooked meats to the brāhmaṇas.
चोष्यैश्चर्व्यैर्लेह्यपेयैरतितृप्तं दिने दिने
With roasted, chewable, lickable, and drinkable foods, they were fully satisfied every day.
पूर्णमन्नं च सूपाक्तं सगव्यं मांसवर्जितम्
He gave full meals with soup, prepared with ghee, but without meat.
न तुष्टुवुः सुयज्ञं च तुष्टुवुस्तत्पितॄंश्च ते
But they did not praise Suyajña; they praised their ancestors.
चक्रुः सुभोजनं विप्राश्चातितृप्ताश्च सुन्दरि
The Brahmins prepared excellent food and, O beautiful one, were exceedingly satisfied.
वृषलेभ्यो ददुः किञ्चित्किञ्चित्पथि च तत्यजुः
They gave a little to the outcastes and left some along the road.
तथाप्युर्वरितं तत्र चान्नराशिसहस्रकम् ।। 2.50.
Yet, even then, a thousand heaps of food remained there.
रत्नेन्द्रसारसंक्लृप्तच्छत्रकोटिसमन्विते
With canopies adorned with the essence of precious gems and countless umbrellas.
चन्दनादिसुसंसृष्टे रम्ये चन्दनपल्लवैः
In a delightful place, mingled with sandalwood and other fragrant substances, decorated with sandalwood leaves.
चन्दनागुरुकस्तूरीवनसिन्दूरसंस्कृते
Prepared with sandalwood, aloe, musk, and vermilion from the forests.
मुनिनारदमन्वादिब्रह्मविष्णुशिवान्विते
Accompanied by sages like Narada and Manu, together with Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.
रूक्षो मलिनवासाश्च शुष्ककण्ठौष्ठतालुकः
Rough, wearing dirty garments, with dry throats, lips, and palates.
राजानमाशिषं चक्रे सस्मितः सम्पुटाञ्जलिः
The king, smiling, offered blessings with cupped hands.
सभासदश्च नोत्तस्थुर्जहसुः स्वल्पमेव च
The members of the assembly did not rise; they laughed only a little.
शशाप नृपतिं क्रोधात्तत्रातिष्ठन्निरंकुशः
Standing there, unrestrained, he cursed the king in anger.
भवाचिरं गलत्कुष्ठी बुद्धिहीनोऽप्युपद्रुतः
May you soon become afflicted with leprosy, devoid of intellect and tormented.
ये यत्र जहसुः सर्वे समुत्तस्थुः सभासदः 2.50.
All those who laughed there, the members of the assembly, stood up together.
प्रणम्यागत्य राजा तं रुरोद भयकातरः
The king, having approached and bowed, wept, overcome by fear.
ब्राह्मणो गूढरूपी च प्रज्वलन्ब्रह्मतेजसा
The Brahmin, concealed in form, shone with the brilliance of Brahman.
हे विप्र तिष्ठ तिष्ठेति समुच्चार्य्य पुनः पुनः
He repeatedly called out, 'O Brahmin, stay, stay!'
