नारायण उवाच रत्नसिंहासने देवीं वासयामास भक्तितः ।। 2.46.
Narayana said: With devotion, he seated the goddess upon a jeweled throne.
स्वर्गगङ्गाजलेनैव रत्नकुम्भ स्थितेन च
With water from the heavenly Ganga, placed in a jeweled vessel,
वाससी वासयामास वह्निशुद्धे मनोरमे
He offered her garments, purified by fire and delightful to the mind.
गणेशं च दिनेशं च वह्निं विष्णुं शिवं शिवाम्
He worshipped Ganesha, the Sun, Fire, Vishnu, Shiva, and Parvati.
ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं मनसादेव्यै स्वाहेत्येवं च मन्त्रतः
He recited the mantra: 'Om hrim shrim to Goddess Manasa, svaha.'
उपचारान्षोडशकान्भक्तितो दुर्लभान्हरिः
With devotion, Hari offered the sixteen rare forms of worship.
वाद्यं नानाप्रकारं च वादयामास तत्र वै
There, indeed, various kinds of musical instruments were played.
देवो विप्राज्ञया तत्र ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवाज्ञया
There, by the command of the Brahmins and by the order of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, the god acted.
महेन्द्र उवाच परात्परां च परमां नहि स्तोतुं क्षमो ऽधुना
Mahendra said: I am not able, at this moment, to praise the Supreme, the highest of the high.
स्तोत्राणां लक्षणं वेदे स्वभावाख्यानतः परम्
The characteristics of hymns are found in the Veda, and are supreme through the narration of their own nature.
शुद्धसत्त्वस्वरूपा त्वं कोपहिंसाविवर्जिता त्वं मया पूजिता साध्वि जननी च यथाऽदितिः 2.46.
You are of pure sattva nature, free from anger and violence; O virtuous one, worshipped by me, you are a mother as Aditi is.
दयारूपा च भगिनी क्षमारूपा यथा प्रसूः
You are compassion embodied, O sister, and forgiveness in the form of a mother.
अहं करोमि त्वां पूज्यां मम प्रीतिश्च वर्द्धते
I make you worthy of worship, and my affection increases.
तथाऽपि तव पूजां वै वर्द्धयामि पुनः पुनः
Still, I continue to increase your worship again and again.
पञ्चम्यां मनसाख्यायां मासान्ते वा दिने दिने
On the fifth day called Manasā, at the end of the month or every day,
यशस्विनः कीर्त्तिमन्तो विद्यावन्तो गुणान्विताः
Those who are renowned, celebrated, learned, and endowed with virtues,
लक्ष्मीहीना भविष्यन्ति तेषां नागभयं सदा
They will become deprived of Lakshmi; for them, there is always the fear of serpents.
नारायणांशो भगवाञ्जरत्कारुर्मुनीश्वरः
The blessed sage Jaratkaru, a portion of Narayana,
अस्माकं रक्षणायैव तेन त्वं मनसाभिधा
For our protection, therefore, you are invoked in the mind.
तेन त्वं मनसादेवी पूजिता वन्दिता भवे
Therefore, O goddess, you are worshipped and saluted in the mind.
तेन त्वां मनसादेवीं प्रवदन्ति पुराविदः 2.46.
Therefore, the knowers of ancient lore call you the goddess in the mind.
यो हि यद्भावयेन्नित्यं शतं प्राप्नोति तत्समम्
Whoever contemplates anything always attains a hundredfold of that.
निर्जगाम स्वभवनं भूषावासपरिच्छदाम्
She departed to her own abode, along with her ornaments, garments, and attendants.
भ्रातृभिः पूजिता शश्वन्मान्या वन्द्या च सर्वतः
She was always worshipped by her brothers, honored and revered everywhere.
तां स्नापयित्वा क्षीरेण पूजयामास सादरम् तदा देवैः पूजिता सा स्वर्गलोकं पुनर्ययौ
After bathing her with milk, he worshipped her with great reverence; then, having been worshipped by the gods, she returned again to the heavenly realm.
इदं स्तोत्रं पुण्यबीजं तां संपूज्य च यः पठेत्
Whoever, having worshipped her, recites this hymn, the seed of merit—
विषं भवेत्सुधातुल्यं सिद्धस्तोत्रं यदा पठेत्
—for him, even poison becomes like nectar, when he recites this perfected hymn.
सर्पशायी भवेत्सोऽपि निश्चितं सर्पवाहनः
He will certainly become one who lies upon serpents, or one whose vehicle is a serpent.
नारद उवाच तज्जन्मचरितं ब्रह्मञ्छ्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः
Nārada said: O Brahman, I wish to hear the true account of her birth and deeds.
नारायण उवाच गवां प्रधाना सुरभी गोलोके च समुद्भवा
Nārāyaṇa said: Among cows, Surabhī is foremost, and she was born in Goloka.
