शम्भुश्च चतुरो वेदान्वेदांगानितरांस्तथा
Śambhu taught the four Vedas and the other branches of knowledge.
भक्तिरस्ति स्वकान्ते चाभीष्टे देवे हरौ गुरौ
There was devotion to his own beloved, to the desired god Hari, and to the guru.
जगाम तपसे विष्णोः पुष्करं शङ्कराज्ञया
By Śaṅkara's command, he went to Puṣkara to perform austerities for Viṣṇu.
दिव्यं वर्षत्रिलक्षं च तपस्तप्त्वा तपोधनः
That ascetic performed divine austerity for three hundred thousand years.
शंकरं च नमस्कृत्य पुरः कृत्वा च बालकम्
Having bowed to Śaṅkara, placing the boy in front, he approached.
तां सपुत्रां सुतां दृष्ट्वा मुदं प्राप प्रजापतिः 2.46.
Seeing his daughter with her son, the Lord of creatures felt joy.
ब्राह्मणान्भोजयामास त्वसंख्याञ्छ्रेयसे शिशोः
He fed countless brāhmaṇas for the welfare of the child.
सा सपुत्रा च सुचिरं तस्थौ तातालये तदा
She, together with her son, then dwelt for a long time in her father's house.
अथाभिमन्युतनये ब्रह्मशापः परीक्षिते
Then, upon Abhimanyu's son, Parikshit, the curse of Brahma was pronounced.
सप्ताहे समतीते तु तक्षकस्त्वां च दंक्ष्यति
When seven days have passed, Takshaka will bite you.
राजा श्रुत्वा तत्प्रवृत्तिं गंगाद्वारं जगाम सः
The king, having heard this news, went to the bank of the Ganga.
सप्ताहे समतीते तु गच्छन्तं तक्षकं पथि
When seven days had passed, Takshaka was traveling on the road.
तयोर्बभूव संवादः सुप्रीतिश्च परस्परम्
There was a conversation between the two, and they became very pleased with each other.
राजा चकार यज्ञं च सर्पसत्राभिधं मुने 2.46.
The king performed a sacrifice called the Sarpa Satra, O sage.
स तक्षकश्च भीतश्च महेन्द्रं शरणं ययौ
Takshaka, being afraid, sought refuge with Mahendra.
अथ देवाश्च मुनयश्चाययुर्मनसान्तिकम् १
Then the gods and sages came to the presence of the Mind-born One.
तत्र आस्तीक आगत्य मातुर्यज्ञमथाज्ञया
There, Astika arrived at the sacrifice by his mother's command.
ददौ वरं नृपश्रेष्ठः कृपया ब्राह्मणाज्ञया
The best of kings, out of compassion and at the command of the Brahmin, granted him a boon.
संपूज्य मनसादेवीं प्रययुः स्वालयं च ते
Having worshipped the goddess in their hearts, they returned to their own abodes.
नारद उवाच पूजाविधिक्रमं तस्याः श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः
Narada said: I wish to hear, in detail, the correct procedure for her worship.
नारायण उवाच रत्नसिंहासने देवीं वासयामास भक्तितः ।। 2.46.
Narayana said: With devotion, he seated the goddess upon a jeweled throne.
स्वर्गगङ्गाजलेनैव रत्नकुम्भ स्थितेन च
With water from the heavenly Ganga, placed in a jeweled vessel,
वाससी वासयामास वह्निशुद्धे मनोरमे
He offered her garments, purified by fire and delightful to the mind.
गणेशं च दिनेशं च वह्निं विष्णुं शिवं शिवाम्
He worshipped Ganesha, the Sun, Fire, Vishnu, Shiva, and Parvati.
ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं मनसादेव्यै स्वाहेत्येवं च मन्त्रतः
He recited the mantra: 'Om hrim shrim to Goddess Manasa, svaha.'
उपचारान्षोडशकान्भक्तितो दुर्लभान्हरिः
With devotion, Hari offered the sixteen rare forms of worship.
वाद्यं नानाप्रकारं च वादयामास तत्र वै
There, indeed, various kinds of musical instruments were played.
देवो विप्राज्ञया तत्र ब्रह्मविष्णुशिवाज्ञया
There, by the command of the Brahmins and by the order of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, the god acted.
महेन्द्र उवाच परात्परां च परमां नहि स्तोतुं क्षमो ऽधुना
Mahendra said: I am not able, at this moment, to praise the Supreme, the highest of the high.
स्तोत्राणां लक्षणं वेदे स्वभावाख्यानतः परम्
The characteristics of hymns are found in the Veda, and are supreme through the narration of their own nature.
