न मोचयेद्यः स कथं गुरुस्तातो हि बान्धवः
He who does not free them, how can he be called a teacher or a true friend?
न दर्शयेद्यः स कथं कीदृशो बान्धवो नृणाम् निर्मूलं च पुराकर्म भवेद्यत्सेवया ध्रुवम्
He who does not show the way, how can he be considered a friend of men? By service, previous karma becomes rootless and certainly destroyed.
मया छलेन त्वं त्यक्ता दोषं मे क्षम्यतां प्रिये
By trickery, I have abandoned you; forgive my fault, beloved.
पुष्करे तपसे यामि गच्छ देवि यथासुखम्
I go to Puṣkara for austerity; go, O goddess, as you please.
धनादिषु स्त्रियां प्रीतिः प्रवृत्तिपथगामिनाम्
A woman's affection for wealth and other things follows the path of inclination.
जरत्कारुवचः श्रुत्वा मनसा शोककातरा
Hearing the words of Jaratkāru, she became distressed in her mind.
मनसोवाच यत्र स्मरामि त्वां बन्धो तत्र मामागमिष्यसि।।2.46.
She spoke in her mind: Wherever I remember you, O friend, there you will come to me.
बन्धुभेदः क्लेशतमः पुत्रभेदस्ततः परः
Division among relatives is the greatest affliction; division among sons is even greater.
पतिः पतिव्रतानां च शतपुत्राधिकः प्रियः
For devoted wives, the husband is dearer than a hundred sons.
पुत्रे यथैकपुत्राणां वैष्णवानां यथा हरौ
Just as for those with only one son, and for Vaishnavas, Hari is supreme.
क्षुधितानां यथाऽन्ने च कामुकानां यथा स्त्रियाम्
Just as food is for the hungry, and as a woman is for those filled with desire,
विदुषां च यथा शास्त्रे वणिज्ये वणिजां यथा
As scripture is for the learned, and as trade is for merchants,
इत्युक्त्वा मनसा देवी पपात स्वामिनः पदे
Having spoken thus, the goddess fell at her husband's feet in her heart.
नेत्रोदकेन मनसां स्नापयामास तां मुनिः
With tears from his eyes, the sage bathed her mind.
तदा ज्ञानेन तौ द्वौ च विशोकौ च बभूवतुः
Then, by knowledge, both of them became free from sorrow.
जगाम तपसे विप्रः स कान्तां सुप्रबोध्य च
The sage, having awakened his beloved well, went to practice austerity.
पार्वती बोधयामास मनसां शोककर्शिताम् 2.46.
Pārvatī awakened the sorrow-stricken mind.
सुप्रशस्ते दिने साध्वी सुषुवे मङ्गले क्षणे
On an auspicious day, at a blessed moment, the virtuous woman gave birth.
गर्भस्थितो महाज्ञानं श्रुत्वा शङ्करवक्त्रतः
While still in the womb, he heard great knowledge from the mouth of Śaṅkara.
जातकं कारयामास वाचयामास मंगलम्
The birth-rites were performed, and auspicious hymns were recited.
शम्भुश्च चतुरो वेदान्वेदांगानितरांस्तथा
Śambhu taught the four Vedas and the other branches of knowledge.
भक्तिरस्ति स्वकान्ते चाभीष्टे देवे हरौ गुरौ
There was devotion to his own beloved, to the desired god Hari, and to the guru.
जगाम तपसे विष्णोः पुष्करं शङ्कराज्ञया
By Śaṅkara's command, he went to Puṣkara to perform austerities for Viṣṇu.
दिव्यं वर्षत्रिलक्षं च तपस्तप्त्वा तपोधनः
That ascetic performed divine austerity for three hundred thousand years.
शंकरं च नमस्कृत्य पुरः कृत्वा च बालकम्
Having bowed to Śaṅkara, placing the boy in front, he approached.
तां सपुत्रां सुतां दृष्ट्वा मुदं प्राप प्रजापतिः 2.46.
Seeing his daughter with her son, the Lord of creatures felt joy.
ब्राह्मणान्भोजयामास त्वसंख्याञ्छ्रेयसे शिशोः
He fed countless brāhmaṇas for the welfare of the child.
सा सपुत्रा च सुचिरं तस्थौ तातालये तदा
She, together with her son, then dwelt for a long time in her father's house.
अथाभिमन्युतनये ब्रह्मशापः परीक्षिते
Then, upon Abhimanyu's son, Parikshit, the curse of Brahma was pronounced.
सप्ताहे समतीते तु तक्षकस्त्वां च दंक्ष्यति
When seven days have passed, Takshaka will bite you.
