यया पतिः पूजितश्च श्रीकृष्णः पूजितस्तया
By whom the husband is worshipped, by her Śrī Kṛṣṇa is also worshipped.
सर्वदानं सर्वयज्ञः सर्वतीर्थनिषेवणम्
All gifts, all sacrifices, all pilgrimages to sacred waters—
सर्वधर्मश्च सत्यं च सर्वदेवप्रपूजनम्
All righteous duties, truthfulness, and worship of all the gods—
सुपुण्ये भारते वर्षे पतिसेवा करोति या
She who serves her husband in the supremely holy land of Bhārata—
विप्रियं कुरुते भर्तुर्विप्रियं वदति प्रियम्
She who does what is displeasing to her husband, or speaks what is pleasing to others but displeasing to him—
कुम्भीपाकं व्रजेत्सा च यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ
She will go to Kumbhīpāka hell for as long as the moon and sun endure.
इत्युक्त्वा च मुनिश्रेष्ठो बभूव स्फुरिताधरः 2.46.
Having spoken thus, the best of sages stood with trembling lips.
मनसोवाच कुरु शान्तिं महाभाग दुष्टाया मम सुव्रत
Manasā said: O most fortunate one, perform peace for my wicked self, O steadfast in vows.
शृङ्गाराहारनिद्राणां यश्च भङ्गं करोति च
And he who disturbs the enjoyment of love, food, or sleep—
इत्युक्त्वा मनसा देवी स्वामिनश्चरणाम्बुजे
Having said this in her mind, the goddess bowed at her husband's lotus feet.
कुपितं च मुनिं दृष्ट्वा श्रीसूर्य्यं शप्तुमुद्यतम्
Seeing the sage enraged and preparing to curse the radiant Sun,
तत्रागत्य मुनिश्रेष्ठमवोचद्भास्करः स्वयम्
Then Bhāskara himself came there and spoke to the best of sages.
श्रीसूर्य्य उवाच त्वां बोधयामास विप्र नाहमस्तं गतस्तदा
Śrī Sūrya said: O brāhmaṇa, I did not set at that time; I made you aware.
क्षमस्व भगवन्ब्रह्मन्मां शप्तुं नोचितं मुने
Forgive me, O revered brāhmaṇa; it is not proper for you to curse me, O sage.
तेषां क्षणार्द्धं क्रोधश्च ततो भस्म भवेज्जगत्
If anger arises in them for even half a moment, then the world would be reduced to ashes.
ब्रह्मणो वंशसम्भूतः प्रज्वलन्ब्रह्मतेजसा
Born from the lineage of Brahma, blazing with the radiance of Brahman.
सूर्य्यस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा द्विजस्तुष्टो बभूव ह 2.46.
Hearing the words of the Sun, the twice-born was pleased.
तत्याज मनसां विप्रः प्रतिज्ञापालनाय च
The sage renounced in his mind, upholding his vow.
सा सस्मार गुरुं शम्भुमिष्टदेवं हरिं विधिम्
She remembered her teacher, Shiva, her chosen deity, Hari, and Brahma.
तत्राजगाम भगवान्गोपीशः शम्भुरेव च
There appeared the Blessed Lord, Lord of the Gopis, and also Shiva.
स च दृष्ट्वाऽभीष्टदेवं निगुणे प्रकृतेः परम्
And seeing his desired deity, beyond qualities, transcending nature,
नमश्चकार शम्भुं च ब्रह्माणं कश्यपं तथा
He offered obeisance to Shiva, to Brahma, and also to Kashyapa.
ब्रह्मा तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा सहसा समयोचितम्
Hearing those words, Brahma immediately spoke in accordance with the situation.
यदि त्यक्ता धर्मपत्नी धर्मिष्ठा मनसा सती
If a wife, though abandoned, is righteous and pure in mind,
यतिर्वा ब्रह्मचारी वा भिक्षुर्वनचरोऽपि वा
Or if one is an ascetic, a celibate, a mendicant, or a forest-dweller,
अकृत्वा तु सुतोत्पत्तिं विरागी यस्त्यजेत्प्रियाम्
But if, without producing offspring, one renounces his beloved out of detachment,
ब्रह्मणो वचनं श्रुत्वा जरत्कारुर्मुनीश्वरः 2.46.
Hearing the words of Brahma, the great sage Jaratkaru,
तस्यै शुभाशिषं दत्त्वा ययुर्देवा मुदाऽन्विताः
Giving her auspicious blessings, the gods departed joyfully.
मुनेः करस्पर्शमात्रात्सद्यो गर्भो बभूव ह
By the mere touch of the sage's hand, a pregnancy immediately arose.
जरत्कारुरुवाच जितेन्द्रियाणां प्रवरो धर्मिष्ठो वैष्णवाग्रणीः
Jaratkaru said: 'Foremost among the self-controlled, righteous, leader among Vaishnavas,'
