ॐ नमो मनसायै वैष्णवी नागभगिनी शैवी नागेश्वरी तथा
Om, obeisance to Manasā, the Vaiṣṇavī, sister of the Nāgas, also Śaivī and Nāgeśvarī.
जरत्कारुप्रियाऽऽस्तीकमाता विषहरीति च
Beloved of Jaratkāru, mother of Āstīka, and known as the remover of poison.
द्वादशैतानि नामानि पूजाकाले च यः पठेत्
Whoever recites these twelve names at the time of worship—
नागभीदे च शयने नागग्रस्ते च मन्दिरे
—whether in fear of serpents, while lying down, or when afflicted by serpents, or in a temple—
इदं स्तोत्रं पठित्वा तु मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
—having recited this hymn, is freed; there is no doubt of this.
दशलक्षजपेनैव स्तोत्रसिद्धिर्भवेन्नृणाम् 2.45.
By reciting it one hundred thousand times, the perfection of the hymn is attained by people.
नागौघं भूषणं कृत्वा स भवेन्नागवाहनः
Having made a multitude of serpents into an ornament, he becomes one whose vehicle is a serpent.
इति श्रीब्रह्मवैवर्त्ते महापुराणे द्वितीये प्रकृतिखण्डे नारदनारायणसंवादे मनसोपाख्याने मनसास्तोत्रादिक थनं नाम पञ्चचत्वारिंशत्तमोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the forty-fifth chapter, named 'The Section on the Hymn to Manasā,' in the narrative of Manasā, in the dialogue between Nārada and Nārāyaṇa, in the Prakṛti section of the great Purāṇa, Śrī Brahmavaivarta.
नारायण उवाच ध्यानं च सामवेदोक्तं देवीपूजाविधानकम्
Nārāyaṇa said: The meditation as spoken in the Sāma Veda, and the procedure for worshipping the goddess—
श्वेतचम्पकवर्णाभां रत्नभूषणभूषिताम्
—her radiance like a white campaka flower, adorned with jeweled ornaments—
महाज्ञानयुतां चैव प्रवरां ज्ञानिनां सताम्
—endowed with great knowledge, and foremost among the wise and the virtuous—
इति ध्यात्वा च तां देवीं मूलेनैव प्रपूजयेत्
Having meditated thus on that goddess, one should worship her with the root mantra itself.
मूलमन्त्रश्च वेदोक्तो भक्तानां वाञ्छितप्रदः
The root mantra, as spoken in the Veda, grants the desires of devotees.
ॐ ह्रीं श्रीं क्रीं ऐं मनसादेव्यै स्वाहेति कीर्तितः
It is declared as: 'Om hrīṃ śrīṃ krīṃ aiṃ, to the goddess Manasā, svāhā.'
मन्त्रसिद्धिर्भवेद्यस्य स सिद्धो जगतीतले
Whoever attains perfection in this mantra becomes accomplished in the world.
ब्रह्मन्नाषाढसंक्रान्त्यां गुडाशाखासु यत्नतः
O Brahman, at the time of the summer solstice, with jaggery and branches, with effort—
पञ्चम्यां मानसाख्यायां देव्यै दद्याच्च यो बलिम्
—on the fifth day called Mānasā, whoever offers a sacrifice to the goddess—
पूजाविधानं कथितं तदाख्यानं निशामय 2.46.
—the procedure for worship has been described; listen now to that account.
पुरा नागभयाक्रान्ता बभूवुर्मानवा भुवि
Long ago, people on earth were afflicted by the fear of serpents.
मन्त्राधिष्ठातृदेवीं तां मानसां ससृजे ततः
Then he created that goddess, the presiding deity of mantras, from his mind.
कुमारी सा च संभूय चागमच्छङ्करालयम्
That maiden, having been born, went to the abode of Śaṅkara according to tradition.
दिव्यं वर्षसहस्रं च तं सिषेवे मुनेः सुता
There, the sage’s daughter served him for a divine thousand years.
महाज्ञानं ददौ तस्यै पाठयामास साम च
He gave her supreme knowledge and taught her the Sāma Veda.
लक्ष्मीमायाकामबीज ङेन्तं कृष्णपदं तथा त्रैलोक्यमङ्गलं नाम कवचं पूजनक्रमम्
He taught her the seed-mantras of Lakṣmī, Māyā, and Kāma, the feet of Kṛṣṇa, the armor named 'Auspiciousness of the Three Worlds,' and the procedures of worship.
स्तवनं सर्वपूज्यं च ध्यानं भुवनपावनम्
He taught her the most venerable hymn and the meditation that purifies the worlds.
प्राप्य मृत्युञ्जयाज्ज्ञानं परं मृत्युञ्जयं सती
Having obtained supreme knowledge from Mṛtyuñjaya, she became truly victorious over death.
त्रियुगं च तपस्तप्त्वा कृष्णस्य परमात्मनः 2.46.
She performed austerities for three ages for Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Soul.
दृष्ट्वा कृशाङ्गीं बालां च कृपया च कृपानिधिः
Seeing the emaciated young girl, the ocean of compassion was moved by pity.
वरं च प्रददौ तस्यै पूजिता त्वं भवे भव
Being worshipped, he granted her a boon: 'May you always be worshipped.'
प्रथमे पूजिता सा च कृष्णेन परमात्मना
She was first worshipped by Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Soul.
