कल्याणं च जयं देहि षष्ठीदेव्यै नमो नमः
Grant welfare and victory—repeated salutations to the goddess Ṣaṣṭhī.
यशस्विनं च राजेन्द्रं षष्ठीदेवीप्रसादतः
By the grace of goddess Ṣaṣṭhī, a king becomes renowned and glorious.
अपुत्रो लभते पुत्रं वरं सुचिरजीविनम्
A sonless man obtains a son, an excellent and long-lived one.
सुचिरायुष्मन्तमेव षष्ठीमातृप्रसादतः 2.43.
Indeed, by the grace of Mother Ṣaṣṭhī, he obtains one with a long life.
वर्षं श्रुत्वा लभेत्पुत्रं षष्ठीदेवीप्रसादतः
Hearing this for a year, one obtains a son by the grace of goddess Ṣaṣṭhī.
नारायण उवाच देवी मङ्गलचण्डी च तदाख्यानं निशामय
Nārāyaṇa said: O goddess, listen to the account of Maṅgalacaṇḍī.
तस्याः पूजादिकं सर्वं धर्मवक्त्राच्च यच्छ्रुतम्
All worship and rituals for her, and whatever was heard from the mouth of Dharma,
चण्डायां वर्त्तते चण्डी जाग्रती शत्रुमण्डले
In Caṇḍā, Caṇḍī abides, awake amidst the circle of enemies.
दुर्गायां विद्यते चण्डी मङ्गलोऽपि महीसुते
In Durgā, Caṇḍī is present, and auspiciousness too, O daughter of the earth.
मंगलो मनुवंशश्च सप्तद्वीपावनीपतिः
Auspiciousness, the lineage of Manu, and the lord of the earth of seven continents,
मूर्त्तिभेदेन सा दुर्गा मूलप्रकृतिरीश्वरी
By difference of form, she is Durgā, the primal nature, the sovereign goddess.
प्रथमे पूजिता सा च शङ्करेण पुरा परा
In ancient times, she, the supreme one, was first worshipped by Śaṅkara.
ब्रह्मन्ब्रह्मोपदेशेन दुर्गप्रस्थे च सङ्कटे
O Brahman, by the instruction of Brahma, in the Durgā plateau and in distress,
ब्रह्मविष्णूपदिष्टश्च दुर्गां तुष्टाव शङ्करः
Śaṅkara praised Durgā, as instructed by Brahma and Viṣṇu.
उवाच पुरतः शम्भोर्भयं नास्तीति ते प्रभो 2.44.
She spoke before Śambhu: 'O Lord, there is no fear for you.'
युद्धशक्तिस्वरूपाऽहं भविष्यामि तदाज्ञया
I shall become the embodiment of battle-power by that command.
जहि दैत्यं च देवेश सुराणां पदघातकम्
Slay the demon, O Lord of the gods, who tramples the feet of the gods.
विष्णुदत्तेन शस्त्रेण जघान तमुमापतिः
With the weapon given by Viṣṇu, Umāpati slew him.
तुष्टुवुः शंकरं देवा भक्तिनम्रात्मकन्धराः
The gods praised Śaṃkara, their heads bowed in devotion.
ब्रह्मा विष्णुश्च सन्तुष्टो ददौ तस्मै शुभाशिषम्
Brahmā and Viṣṇu, pleased, bestowed auspicious blessings upon him.
पूजयामास तां शक्तिं देवीं मङ्गलचण्डिकाम्
He worshipped that power, the goddess Maṅgala Caṇḍikā.
पुष्पचन्दननैवेद्यैर्भक्त्या नानाविधैर्मुने
With flowers, sandalwood, offerings, and various acts of devotion, O sage,
वस्त्रालङ्कारमाल्यैश्च पायसैः पिष्टकैरपि
With garments, ornaments, garlands, sweet rice, and cakes as well,
सङ्गीतैर्नर्त्तनैर्वाद्यैरुत्सवैः कृष्णकीर्त्तनैः
With music, dance, instruments, festivals, and praises of Kṛṣṇa.
ददौ द्रव्याणि मूलेन मन्त्रेणैव च नारद ऐं क्रूं फट्स्वाहेत्येवं चाप्येकविंशाक्षरो मनुः 2.44.
Nārada gave the offerings in full, along with the mantra; the mantra is twenty-one syllables: 'aiṃ krūṃ phaṭ svāhā.'
पूज्यः कल्पतरुश्चैव भक्तानां सर्वकामदः
She is to be worshipped as the wish-fulfilling tree, granting all desires to devotees.
मन्त्रसिद्धिर्भवेद्यस्य स विष्णुः सर्वकामदः
He who attains perfection in this mantra becomes Viṣṇu, the fulfiller of all desires.
देवीं षोडशवर्षीयां रम्यां सुस्थिरयौवनाम्
The goddess is sixteen years old, beautiful, and in the prime of steady youth.
श्वेतचम्पकवर्णाभां चन्द्रकोटिसमप्रभाम्
She shines with the hue of white campaka flowers, her radiance equal to millions of moons.
बिभ्रतीं कबरीभारं मल्लिकामाल्यभूषितम्
She bears a mass of flowing hair, adorned with garlands of jasmine.
