शङ्कर उवाच प्राणांश्च न समर्थोऽहं प्रदातुं शरणागतम्
Śaṅkara said: I am not able to give up the life of one who has sought my refuge.
यो ददाति भयेनैव प्रपन्नं शरणागतम् 1.9.
He who gives up one who has sought refuge, out of fear—
सर्वं त्यक्तुं समर्थोऽहं न स्वधर्मं जगत्प्रभो
I am able to give up everything, O Lord of the world, but not my own duty.
यश्च धर्मं सदा रक्षेद्धर्मस्तं परिरक्षति
And whoever always protects dharma, dharma in turn protects him.
त्वं सर्वमाता स्रष्टा च हन्ता च परिणामतः
You are the mother of all, the creator, and, in transformation, the destroyer as well.
शङ्करस्य वचः श्रुत्वा भगवान्सर्वभाववित्
Hearing Śaṅkara’s words, the Lord, knower of all hearts,
प्रतस्थावर्द्धचन्द्रश्च निर्व्याधिः शिवशेखरे
The waxing Moon, now free from disease, departed, adorned on Śiva’s crest.
यक्ष्मग्रस्तं च तं दृष्ट्वा दक्षस्तुष्टाव माधवम्
Seeing him afflicted with consumption, Dakṣa praised Mādhava.
कृष्णस्तेभ्यो वरं दत्त्वा जगाम स्वालयं द्विज
Kṛṣṇa, having granted them a boon, returned to his own abode, O brāhmaṇa.
चन्द्रस्ताश्च परिप्राप्य विजहार दिवानिशम्
The Moon, having regained them, sported day and night.
इत्येवं कथितं सर्वं किञ्चित्सृष्टिक्रमं मुने
Thus, O sage, the entire order of creation has been described.
सौतिरुवाच क्रतोरपि क्रिया भार्य्या वालखिल्यानसूयत
Sauti said: Even in the ritual, the wife is essential for the performance; the Vālakhilya sages were born.
त्रयः पुत्राश्चाङ्गिरसो बभूवुर्मुनिसत्तमाः
Three sons of Aṅgiras were born, O best of sages.
वसिष्ठस्य सुतः शक्तिः शक्तेः पुत्रः पराशरः
Śakti was the son of Vasiṣṭha, and Parāśara was the son of Śakti.
व्यासपुत्रः शिवांशश्च शुकश्च ज्ञानिनां वरः
Vyāsa's son, a portion of Śiva, was Śuka, foremost among the wise.
शौनक उवाच न बुद्धं वचनं किंचिद्धनेशोत्पत्तिपूर्वकम्
Śaunaka said: No authoritative statement exists regarding the origin of Dhanesha.
अधुना कथितं जन्म धनेशस्येश्वरादिदम्
Now, the birth of Dhanesha, the lord, has been narrated.
सौतिरुवाच पुनश्च ब्रह्मशापेन स च विश्वश्रवस्सुतः
Sauti said: Again, by the curse of Brahma, he, the son of Viśravas, was affected.
गुरवे दक्षिणां दातुमुतथ्यश्च धनेश्वरम्
Utathya gave Dhaneshvara as a gift to the teacher as a fee.
धनेशो विरसो भूत्वा तस्मै तद्दातुमुद्यतः
Dhanesha, having become weak, was ready to give himself to him.
तेन विश्रवसः पुत्रः कुबेरश्च धनाधिपः 1.10.
Thus, Kubera, the son of Viśravas, became the lord of wealth.
पुलहस्य सुतो वात्स्यः शाण्डिल्यश्च रुचेः सुतः
Pulah's son was Vātsya, and Śāṇḍilya was the son of Ruci.
काश्यपः कश्यपाज्जातो भरद्वाजो बृहस्पतेः
Kāśyapa was born from Kaśyapa, and Bharadvāja from Bṛhaspati.
शाण्डिल्यश्च रुचेः पुत्रो मुनिस्तेजस्विनां वरः
Śāṇḍilya, the son of Ruci, was a sage, foremost among the radiant.
बभूवुर्ब्रह्मणो वक्त्रादन्या ब्राह्मणजातयः
Other Brahmin lineages arose from the mouth of Brahma.
चन्द्रादित्यमनूनां च प्रवराः क्षत्रियाः स्मृताः
The eminent Kṣatriyas are remembered as descendants of the moon, the sun, and the Manus.
ऊरुदेशाच्च वैश्याश्च पादतः शूद्रजातयः
From the thighs came the Vaiśyas, and from the feet, the Śūdra lineages.
गोपनापितभिल्लाश्च तथा मोदककूबरौ
Cowherds, barbers, Bhillas, as well as Modaka and Kūbara, were also born.
इत्येवमाद्या विप्रेन्द्र सच्छूद्राः परिकीर्त्तिताः
Thus, O foremost of Brahmins, the original pure Śūdras have been described.
विश्वकर्मा च शूद्रायां वीर्य्याधानं चकार सः
Viśvakarmā deposited his seed in a Śūdra woman.
