पुरा त्वं च सुशीलाख्या शीलेन सुशुभेन च
Formerly, you were called Suśīlā, possessing excellent and auspicious conduct.
गोलोकात्त्वं परिध्वस्ता मम भाग्यादुपस्थिता
You descended from Goloka, arriving by my fortune.
कर्तॄणां कर्मणां देवी त्वमेव फलदा सदा
Among those who act, O goddess, you alone always grant the fruit.
फलशाखाविहीनश्च यथा वृक्षो महीतले
Just as a tree on earth is without fruit-bearing branches,
ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशाश्च दिक्पालादय एव च
Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Maheśa, and the guardians of the directions, and others,
कर्मरूपी स्वयं ब्रह्मा फलरूपी महेश्वरः
Brahmā himself is the form of action, Maheśvara is the form of its fruit.
फलदाता परं ब्रह्म निर्गुणः प्रकृतेः परः 2.42.
The giver of fruits is the supreme Brahman, beyond qualities, transcending nature.
त्वमेव शक्तिः कान्ते मे शश्वज्जन्मनि जन्मनि
You alone are my power, O beloved, throughout all my births, again and again.
इत्युक्त्वा तत्पुरस्तस्थौ यज्ञाधिष्ठातृदेवकः
Having spoken thus, the deity presiding over sacrifice stood before her.
इदं च दक्षिणास्तोत्रं यज्ञकाले च यः पठेत्
Whoever recites this hymn of offering at the time of sacrifice,
राजसूये वाजपेये गोमेधे नरमेधके
In the Rājasūya, Vājapeya, Gomedha, and human sacrifice,
धनदे भूमिदे फल्गौ पुत्रेष्टौ गजमेधके
In the giving of wealth, land, in Phalga, in the desire for sons, and in elephant sacrifice,
शिवयजे रुद्रयज्ञे शक्रयज्ञे च बन्धके
In the worship of Shiva, in the sacrifice to Rudra, in the sacrifice to Indra, and in bondage,
शुचियागे धर्मयागे रेचने पापमोचने
In pure sacrifice, in righteous sacrifice, in purification, and in the removal of sin,
एतेषां च समारम्भे इदं स्तोत्रं च यः पठेत्
At the commencement of these, whoever recites this hymn,
इदं स्तोत्रं च कथितं ध्यानं पूजाविधानकम्
This hymn has been spoken, along with meditation and the method of worship.
लक्ष्मीदक्षांशसम्भूतां दक्षिणां कमलाकलाम् 2.42.
I worship Dakṣiṇā, born from a portion of Lakṣmī, a ray of the lotus.
विष्णोःशक्तिस्वरूपां च सुशीलां शुभदां भजे
I adore her, the embodiment of Viṣṇu’s power, virtuous and bestower of auspiciousness.
दत्त्वा पाद्यादिकं देव्यै वेदोक्तेन च नारद
Having offered water for the feet and other items to the goddess, as prescribed in the Vedas, O Nārada,
पूजयेद्विधिवद्भक्त्या दक्षिणां सर्वपूजिताम्
One should worship Dakṣiṇā, honored by all, properly and with devotion.
सुखदं प्रीतिदं चैव फलदं सर्वकर्मणाम्
She grants happiness, delight, and the fruits of all actions.
अंगहीनं च तत्कर्म न भवेद्भारते भुवि
Any rite lacking this element does not succeed on the earth of Bhārata.
भार्य्याहीनो लभेद्भार्य्यां सुशीलां सुन्दरीं पराम्
One who is without a wife obtains a wife who is virtuous, beautiful, and supreme.
पतिव्रतां सुव्रतां च शुद्धां च कुलजां वराम्
A wife who is devoted to her husband, steadfast in vows, pure, born in a noble family, and excellent.
भूमिहीनो लभेद्भूमिं प्रजाहीनो लभेत्प्रजाः
One who lacks land obtains land; one who lacks offspring obtains offspring.
मासमेकमिदं श्रुत्वा मुच्यते नात्र संशयः
By hearing this for one month, one is freed—there is no doubt about this.
नारद उवाच अन्यासां चरितं ब्रह्मन्वद वेदविदां वर
Nārada said: O Brahman, tell me the deeds of the others, O best among those versed in the Vedas.
नारायण उवाच पूर्वोक्तानां च देवीनां त्वं कासां श्रोतुमिच्छसि
Nārāyaṇa said: Of the previously mentioned goddesses, which ones do you wish to hear about?
नारद उवाच उत्पत्तिमासां चरितं श्रोतुमिच्छामि तत्त्वतः
Nārada said: I wish to hear, in truth, their origin and deeds.
नारायण उवाच बालकाधिष्ठातृदेवी विष्णुमाया च बालदा
Nārāyaṇa said: The goddess who presides over children, Viṣṇumāyā, who grants children,
