स्वधां नाभ्यर्च्य यो विप्रः श्राद्धं कुर्य्यादहंमतिः
If a brāhmaṇa, with a pure mind, performs śrāddha without first worshipping Svadhā,
ब्रह्मणो मानसीं कन्यां शश्वत्सुस्थिरयौवनाम्
He should meditate upon Brahmā’s mind-born daughter, eternally youthful and steadfast,
इति ध्यात्वा घटे रम्ये शालग्रामेऽथवा शुभे
Thus meditating, in a beautiful vessel, at Śālagrāma or another auspicious place,
आं श्रीं क्लीं स्वधादेव्यै स्वाहेति च महामनुम्
He should recite the great mantra: 'Āṃ, Śrīṃ, Klīṃ, Svadhādevyai, Svāhā.'
स्तोत्रं शृणु मुनिश्रेष्ठ ब्रह्मपुत्र विशारद
Hear the hymn, O best of sages, O wise son of Brahmā.
ब्रह्मोवाच मुच्यते सर्वपापेभ्यो वाजपेयफलं लभेत्
Brahmā said: One is freed from all sins and attains the fruit of the Vājapeya sacrifice.
स्वधा स्वधा स्वधेत्येवं यदि वारत्रयं स्मरेत्
If one remembers 'Svadhā, Svadhā, Svadhā' three times daily,
श्राद्धकाले स्वधास्तोत्रं यः शृणोति समाहितः
Whoever listens attentively to the Svadhā hymn at the time of śrāddha,
स्वधा स्वधा स्वधेत्येवं त्रिसन्ध्यं यः पठेन्नरः 2.41.
Whoever recites 'Svadhā, Svadhā, Svadhā' at the three junctions of the day,
पितॄणां प्राणतुल्या त्वं द्विजजीवनरूपिणी
You are equal to the breath of the ancestors, embodying the life of the twice-born.
बहिर्मन्मनसो गच्छ पितॄणां तुष्टिहेतवे
Go beyond my mind, for the satisfaction of the ancestors.
नित्या नित्यस्वरूपाऽसि गुणरूपाऽसि सुव्रते
You are eternal, of eternal nature, of virtuous form, O noble one.
ॐ स्वस्ति च नमः स्वाहा स्वधा त्वं दक्षिणा तथा
Om, blessings, homage, Svāhā, Svadhā, you are also Dakṣiṇā.
पुराऽऽसीस्त्वं स्वधा गोपी गोलोके राधिका सखी
Formerly, you were Svadhā, a gopī in Goloka, companion of Rādhikā.
ध्वस्ता त्वं राधिकाशापाद्गोलोकाद्विश्वमागता
You were cast out from Goloka by Rādhikā’s curse and came to the world.
कृष्णालिंगनपुण्येन भूता मे मानसी सुता
By the merit of Kṛṣṇa’s embrace, you became my mind-born daughter.
स्वाहा सा सुन्दरी गोपी पुराऽऽसीद्राधिकासखी
That Svāhā, the beautiful gopī, was formerly a companion of Rādhikā.
कृष्णेन सार्द्धं सुचिरं वसन्ते रासमण्डले
For a long time, she dwelled with Krishna in the circle of the rāsa dance during spring.
तस्याः शापेन सा ध्वस्ता गोलोकाद्विश्वमागता 2.41.
By her curse, she was ruined and came from Goloka to the world.
पवित्ररूपा परमा देवाद्यैर्वन्दिता नृभिः
She, of pure form and supreme, is honored by gods and men.
या सुशीलाभिधा गोपी पुराऽऽसीद्राधिकासखी
That gopī named Suśīlā was formerly a companion of Rādhikā.
प्रध्वस्ता सा च तच्छापाद्गोलोकाद्विश्वमागता
She too was ruined by that curse and came from Goloka to the world.
सा प्रेयसी रतौ दक्षा प्रशस्ता सर्वकर्मसु
She is beloved, skilled in love, and praised in all actions.
गोप्या बभूवुस्तिस्रो वै स्वधा स्वाहा च दक्षिणा
Three gopīs became Svadhā, Svāhā, and Dakṣiṇā.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा स ब्रह्मा ब्रह्मलोके च संसदि
Having spoken thus, Brahmā, in the assembly in Brahmaloka,
तदा पितृभ्यः प्रददौ तामेव कमलाननाम्
Then he gave that lotus-faced one to the Pitṛs.
स्वधास्तोत्रमिदं पुण्यं यः शृणोति समाहितः
Whoever listens attentively to this sacred hymn to Svadhā,
नारायण उवाच वक्ष्यामि दक्षिणाख्यानं सावधानं निशामय
Nārāyaṇa said: I will tell the story of Dakṣiṇā; listen carefully.
गोपी सुशीला गोलोके पुराऽऽसीत्प्रेयसी हरेः अतीव सुन्दरी रामा सुभगा सुदती सती
The gopī Suśīlā was once Hare's beloved in Goloka, exceedingly beautiful, charming, fortunate, lovely-toothed, and virtuous.
विद्यावती गुणवती सती रूपवती तथा
She was learned, virtuous, chaste, and beautiful.
