वृत्तान्तं कथयामास सुराचार्यो विधिं विभुम्
The preceptor of the gods related the events to the mighty Creator.
ब्रह्मोवाच बृहस्पतेश्च शिष्यस्त्वं सुराणामधिपः स्वयम्
Brahma said: You are the disciple of Brihaspati and yourself the lord of the gods.
मातामहस्ते दक्षश्च विष्णुभक्तः प्रतापवान्
His maternal grandfather is Daksha, a devoted follower of Vishnu and endowed with great power.
माता पतिव्रता यस्य पिता शुद्धो जितेन्द्रियः
His mother is devoted to her husband, and his father is pure and has mastered his senses.
जनः पैतृकदोषेण दोषान्मातामहस्य च
A person is affected by the faults of his father and also by those of his maternal grandfather.
सर्वान्तरात्मा भगवान्सर्वदेहेष्ववस्थितः
The Blessed Lord, the inner soul of all, abides within every body.
मनोऽहमिन्द्रियेशश्च ज्ञानरूपो हि शङ्करः
The mind, the lord of the senses, and knowledge itself are indeed forms of Shankara.
निद्रादयः शक्तयश्च ताः सर्वाः प्रकृतेः कलाः 2.38.
Sleep and other powers—all these are energies, portions of Nature.
आत्मनीशे गते देहात्सर्वे यान्ति ससंभ्रमात्
When the Lord of the self departs from the body, all [powers] hastily follow.
अहं शिवश्च शेषश्च विष्णुर्धर्मो महान्विराट्
I, Shiva, Shesha, Vishnu, Dharma, the Great One, and Virat—
शिवेन पूजितं पादपद्मं पुष्पेण येन च
By whomsoever the lotus feet are worshipped with a flower, and by Shiva—
तत्पुष्पं मस्तके यस्य कृष्णपादाब्जतश्च्युतम्
That flower, fallen from Krishna’s lotus feet, is placed upon whose head—
दैवेन वञ्चितस्त्वं च दैवं च बलवत्तरम्
You have been deceived by fate, and fate is indeed most powerful.
कृष्णं न मन्यते यो हि श्रीनाथं सर्ववन्दितम्
He who does not regard Krishna, the Lord of Lakshmi, worshipped by all—
शतयज्ञेन या लब्धा दीक्षितेन त्वया पुरा
That which was obtained by you before, through a hundred sacrifices and consecration—
अधुना गच्छ वैकुण्ठं मया च गुरुणा सह
Now go to Vaikuntha, together with me and your teacher.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा स ब्रह्मा सर्वैः सुरगणैः सह
Having thus spoken, Brahma, along with all the hosts of gods—
तत्र गत्वा परं ब्रह्म भगवन्तं सनातनम् 2.38.
Having gone there, they saw the Supreme Brahman, the Blessed Lord, the Eternal One.
ग्रीष्ममध्याह्नमार्त्तण्डशतकोटिसमप्रभम्
He was radiant like ten billion midday summer suns.
चतुर्भुजैः पार्षदैश्च सरस्वत्या स्तुतं नतम्
He was praised and bowed to by Sarasvati and attendants with four arms.
तं प्रणेमुः सुराः सर्वे मूर्ध्ना ब्रह्मपुरोगमाः
All the gods, led by Brahma, bowed to him, touching their heads to the ground.
वृत्तान्तं कथयामास स्वयं ब्रह्मा कृताञ्जलिः
Brahma himself, with hands joined in reverence, began to recount the events.
स चापश्यत्सुरगणं विपद्ग्रस्तं भयाकुलम्
He saw the host of gods, afflicted by calamity and overwhelmed by fear.
शोभाशून्यं हतश्रीकं परिवारैरनावृतम्
Devoid of splendor, bereft of fortune, and surrounded by attendants, they appeared uncovered.
नारायण उवाच दास्यामि लक्ष्मीमचलां परमैश्वर्यवर्द्धिनीम्
Narayana said: I will grant you Lakshmi, unshakable and increasing supreme prosperity.
किञ्च मद्वचनं किञ्चिच्छ्रूयतां समयोचितम्
Moreover, let my words, appropriate to the occasion, be heard.
जनाश्चासंख्यविश्वस्था मदधीनाश्च सन्ततम्
Countless people in the world are always under my authority.
यो यो रुष्टो हि मद्भक्ते मत्परे हि निरङ्कुशः 2.38.
Whoever, uncontrolled, becomes angry with my devotees or those devoted to me—
दुर्वासाः शङ्करांशश्च वैष्णवो मत्परायणः
Durvasa, a portion of Shankara, is a Vaishnava devoted to me.
यत्र शङ्खध्वनिर्नास्ति तुलसी च शिलार्चनम्
Where there is no sound of the conch, nor worship with tulasi or stone—
