चतुर्थे चिरजीवी स्यात्क्षणानामनुरूपकः
In the fourth quarter, one lives long, corresponding to the moment.
यादृशे च क्षणे जन्म प्रसवस्तादृशे भवेत्
As is the moment of birth, so is the delivery.
कललं त्वेकरात्रेण प्रवृद्धः स्याद्दिने दिने
Within a single night, the embryo forms, and day by day it grows.
मासत्रये मांसपिण्डो हस्तपादादिवर्जितः
In three months, it becomes a mass of flesh, still lacking hands, feet, and other limbs.
भवेत्तु जीवसंचारः षण्मासे सर्वतत्त्ववित्
By the sixth month, the movement of life arises, O knower of all principles.
मातृजग्धान्नपानं च भुङ्क्तेऽमेध्यस्थले स्थितः
Remaining in an impure place, it partakes of the food and drink consumed by the mother.
एवं च चतुरो मासान्भुक्त्वा परमयातनाम् 2.36.
Thus, for four months, having endured the utmost suffering, 2.36.
दिग्देशकालाव्युत्पन्नो विस्मृतो विष्णुमायया
Deprived of knowledge of direction, place, and time, he is bewildered by Viṣṇu's illusion.
परायत्तोऽप्यक्षमश्च मशकादिनि वारणे
Though dependent on others, he is powerless even to ward off flies and the like.
स्तनान्धोऽप्यसमर्थश्च याञ्चां कर्तुमभीप्सिताम्
Blind at the breast and incapable of expressing his desires.
पौगण्डे यातनां भुक्त्वा प्राप्नुते यौवनं पुनः
Having suffered in childhood, he attains youth once again.
आहारमैथुनार्त्तश्च नानामोहादिवेष्टितः
He is afflicted by hunger, sexual desire, and pain, enveloped by various delusions.
एवं यावत्समर्थश्च तावदेव हि पूजितः
Thus, only as long as he is capable is he honored.
यदाऽतीव जरायुक्तो जडोऽतिबधिरो भवेत्
When he is overtaken by extreme old age, becoming dull and very deaf,
तदन्तरेऽनुतापं च कुरुते सन्ततं पुनः
Then, in that state, he continually feels regret again and again.
पुनश्च मानवीं योनिं लभामि भारते यदि
And he thinks, 'If only I might obtain a human birth in Bhārata again.'
इत्येवमादि मनसि कुर्वन्तं तं जडं सुर 2.36.
Thus, as he entertains such thoughts in his mind, that dull one, O god, 2.36.
स पश्येद्यमदूतं च पाशहस्तं च दण्डिनम्
He sees the messenger of Yama, holding a noose and a staff.
दुर्निवार्य्यमुपायैश्च बलिष्ठं च भयङ्करम्
Difficult to resist by any means, strong and terrifying.
दृष्टमात्रान्महाभीतो विण्मूत्रं च समुत्सृजेत्
At the mere sight, overwhelmed by great fear, he voids urine and excrement.
अंगुष्ठमात्रं पुरुषं गृहीत्वा यमकिङ्करः
A servant of Yama, having seized the person the size of a thumb,
जीवो गत्वा यमं पश्येत्सर्वधर्मज्ञमेव च
the soul, having gone, beholds Yama, who knows all dharma.
धर्माधर्मविचारज्ञं सर्वज्ञं सर्वतोमुखम्
He is expert in discerning righteousness and unrighteousness, all-knowing, facing all directions.
वह्निशुद्धांशुकाधानं रत्नभूषणभूषितम्
He is adorned with garments purified by fire and decorated with jeweled ornaments.
जपन्तं श्रीकृष्णनाम शुद्धस्फाटिकमालया
He recites the name of Śrī Kṛṣṇa, with a pure crystal rosary.
सगद्गदं साश्रुनेत्रं सर्वत्र समदर्शिनम्
His voice is choked with emotion, his eyes filled with tears, and he sees all equally.
स्वतेजसा प्रज्वलन्तं सुखदृश्यं विचक्षणम् 2.36.
He shines with his own brilliance, is pleasant to behold, and is discerning.
पुण्यात्मनां शान्तरूपं पापिनां च भयङ्करम्
To the virtuous he appears peaceful in form, but to the sinful, terrifying.
चित्रगुप्तविचारेण येषां यदुचितं फलम्
By the judgment of Citragupta, each receives the result appropriate to them.
एवं तेषां गतायाते निवृत्तिर्नास्ति जीविनाम्
In this way, for those who have come and gone, there is no cessation for the living.
