अनन्तं वासुकिं चैव कालीयं च धनञ्जयम्
Ananta, Vasuki, Kaliya, and Dhananjaya,
महापद्मं च शंकुं च शंखं संवरणं तथा 1.9.
Mahapadma, Shanku, Shankha, and also Samvarana,
गोक्षं गोकार्मुकं चैव विरूपादींश्च शौनक
Goksha, Gokarmuka, and indeed Virupadi and others, O Shaunaka,
कन्यका मनसा देवी कमलांशसमुद्भवा
The maiden Manasa, goddess born from a portion of Kamala,
यत्पतिश्च जरत्कारुर्नारायणकुलोद्भवः
Her husband is Jaratkaru, born in the line of Narayana.
एतेषां नाममात्रेण नास्ति नागभयं नृणाम्
By merely uttering their names, there is no fear of serpents for men.
वैनतेयारुणौ पुत्रौ विष्णुतुल्यपराक्रमौ
Vainateya and Aruṇa, the two sons, were equal in valor to Viṣṇu.
गावश्च महिषाश्चैव सुरभिप्रवरा इमे
These are the foremost among cows and buffaloes, descended from Surabhi.
दानवाश्च दनोर्वंशा अन्यास्सामान्यजातयः
And the Dānavas, born in the lineage of Danu, and others of common birth.
नामानि चन्द्रपत्नीनां सावधानं निशामय
Now, listen attentively to the names of the wives of the Moon.
अश्विनी भरणी चैव कृत्तिका रोहिणी तथा
Aśvinī, Bharaṇī, Kṛttikā, and also Rohiṇī,
पुष्याऽऽश्लेषा मघा पूर्वफल्गुन्युत्तरफल्गुनी 1.9.
Puṣyā, Āśleṣā, Maghā, Pūrvaphalgunī, and Uttaraphalgunī,
ज्येष्ठा मूला तथा पूर्वाऽऽषाढा चैवोत्तरा स्मृता
Jyeṣṭhā, Mūlā, Pūrvāṣāḍhā, and also Uttarā are remembered.
पूर्वा भाद्रोत्तराभाद्रा रेवत्यन्ता विधुप्रियाः
Pūrvabhādrapadā, Uttarabhādrapadā, and Revati are beloved of the Moon, ending the list.
सन्ततं रसभावेन चकार शशिनं वशम्
Constantly, with affection, they brought the Moon under their sway.
सर्वा भगिन्यः पितरं कथयामासुरादृताः
All the sisters, honored, spoke to their father.
दक्षः प्रकुपितश्चन्द्रमशपन्मन्त्रपूर्वकम्
Dakṣa, enraged, cursed the Moon with a mantra.
दिने दिने यक्ष्मणा स क्षीयमाणश्च दुःखितः
Day by day, afflicted with consumption, he wasted away and was distressed.
दृष्ट्वा चन्द्रं शंकरश्च क्लेशितं शरणागतम्
Seeing the Moon, tormented and seeking refuge, Śaṅkara beheld him.
निर्मुक्तं यक्ष्मणा कृत्वा स्वकपोले स्थलं ददौ
Freed him from consumption and gave him a place on his own forehead.
तं शिवः शेखरे कृत्वा चाभवच्चन्द्रशेखरः
Śiva, placing him on his crest, thus became known as Candraśekhara.
दक्षकन्याः पतिं मुक्तं दृष्ट्वा च रुरुदुः पुनः 1.9.
Seeing their husband freed, Dakṣa’s daughters wept again.
उच्चैश्च रुरुदुर्गत्वा निहत्याङ्गं पुनः पुनः
They wept loudly, falling down, striking their bodies again and again.
दक्षकन्या ऊचुः सौभाग्यमस्तु नस्तात गतः स्वामी गुणान्वितः
Dakṣa’s daughters said: 'May we have good fortune, father, for our virtuous husband is gone.'
स्थिते चक्षुषि हे तात दृष्टं ध्वान्तमयं जगत्
When the eye remains open, O dear one, the world appears as darkness.
पतिरेव गतिः स्त्रीणां पतिः प्राणाश्च सम्पदः
For women, the husband alone is their path; the husband is their life and their wealth.
पतिर्नारायणः स्त्रीणां व्रतं धर्मः सनातनः
For women, Narayana is the husband; their vow and eternal duty is the husband.
स्नानं च सर्वतीर्थेषु सर्वयज्ञेषु दक्षिणा
Bathing in all sacred waters and giving gifts at all sacrifices,
देवार्चनं चानशनं सर्वाणि च तपांसि च
Worship of the gods, fasting, and all forms of austerity,
सर्वेषां बान्धवानां च प्रियः पुत्रश्च योषिताम्
Among all relatives, the son is most dear to women.
