चतुर्भुजश्च वैकुण्ठं प्रययौ पद्मया सह
The four-armed one went to Vaikuṇṭha together with Padmā.
महालक्ष्मीश्च योगेन नानारूपा बभूव सा
Mahālakṣmī, by her yoga, became manifold in form.
शुद्धसत्त्वस्वरूपा च सर्वसौभाग्यसंयुता
She is of pure sattva nature and endowed with all auspiciousness.
स्वर्गे च स्वर्गलक्ष्मीश्च शक्रसम्पत्स्वरूपिणी
In heaven, she is Svarga Lakṣmī, the embodiment of Indra's prosperity.
गृहलक्ष्मीर्गृहेष्वेव गृहिणी च कलांशया
In homes, she is Gṛha Lakṣmī, the housewife, with a portion of arts.
गवां प्रसूः सा सुरभिर्दक्षिणा यज्ञकामिनी 2.35.
She is the mother of cows, Surabhi, and the right side is the one who desires sacrifice.
शोभारूपा च चन्द्रे सा सूर्य्यमण्डलमण्डिता
She is radiant in the moon, adorned in the solar orb.
नृपेषु नृपपत्नीषु दिव्यस्त्रीषु गृहेषु च
Among kings, among queens, among divine women, and in households.
प्रतिमासु च देवानां मङ्गलेषु घटेषु च
In the images of the gods and in auspicious vessels,
मणींद्रेषु च हारेषु क्षीरं वै चन्दनेषु च
In the foremost jewels and necklaces, as well as in milk and sandalwood,
वैकुण्ठे पूजिता साऽऽदौ देवी नारायणेन च
At the beginning, the goddess was worshipped in Vaikuṇṭha by Nārāyaṇa,
विष्णुना पूजिता सा च क्षीरोदे भारते मुने
She was worshipped by Viṣṇu in the Milk Ocean, O sage of Bharata,
ऋषीन्द्रैश्च मुनीन्द्रैश्च सद्भिश्च गृहिभिर्भवेत्
She is to be worshipped by the foremost sages, eminent ascetics, and virtuous householders,
शुक्लाष्टम्यां भाद्रपदे पूजा वै ब्रह्मणा कृता
On the bright eighth day in Bhādrapada, the worship was performed by Brahmā,
चैत्रे पौषे च भाद्रे च पुण्ये मङ्गलवासरे
In Caitra, Pauṣa, and Bhādra, on auspicious days of merit,
वर्षान्ते पौषसंक्रांत्यां मेध्यामावाह्य चाङ्गणे 2.35.
At the end of the year, at the transition of Pauṣa, having invoked her in the courtyard,
राज्ञा संपूजिता सा वै मङ्गलेनैव मङ्गला
She was worshipped by the king with auspiciousness, indeed as the auspicious one,
ध्रुवेणौत्तानपादेन शक्रेण बलिना तथा
By Dhruva, Uttānapāda, Śakra, and also by Bali,
प्रियव्रतेन चन्द्रेण कुबेरेणैव वायुना
By Priyavrata, Candra, Kubera, and likewise by Vāyu,
एवं सर्वत्र सर्वैश्च वन्दिता पूजिता सदा
Thus, everywhere and by all, she is always praised and worshipped,
इति श्रीब्रह्मवैवर्त्ते महापुराणे द्वितीये प्रकृतिखण्डे नारदनारायणसंवादे लक्ष्म्युपाख्याने लक्ष्मीस्वरूपपूजादिवर्णनं नाम पञ्चत्रिंशोऽध्यायः
Thus ends the thirty-fifth chapter named 'Description of Lakṣmī's Form and Worship' in the narration of Lakṣmī within the dialogue of Nārada and Nārāyaṇa, in the second section, Prakṛti-khaṇḍa, of the glorious Brahma-vaivarta Mahāpurāṇa.
नारद उवाच वैकुण्ठाधिष्ठातृदेवी महालक्ष्मीः सनातनी
Nārada said: The goddess Mahālakṣmī, eternal, presiding over Vaikuṇṭha,
कथं बभूव सा देवी पृथिव्यां सिन्धुकन्यका
How did that goddess become the daughter of the ocean on earth?
पुरा केन स्तुताऽऽदौ सा तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि
By whom was she praised in ancient times at the beginning? Please explain this to me.
नारायण उवाच बभूव देवसंघश्च मर्त्यलोकश्च नारद
Nārāyaṇa said: There arose the assembly of gods and the world of mortals, O Nārada,
लक्ष्मीः स्वर्गादिकं त्यक्त्वा रुष्टा परमदुःखिता
Lakṣmī, abandoning heaven and the like, became angry and extremely distressed.
तदा शोकाद्ययुर्देवा दुःखिता ब्रह्मणः सभाम्
At that time, the gods, afflicted by sorrow and other troubles, were distressed in Brahma's assembly.
वैकुण्ठे शरणा पन्ना देवा नारायणे परे
In Vaikuntha, the gods sought refuge in the supreme Narayana.
तदा लक्ष्मीश्च कलया पुरा नारायणाज्ञया
Then Lakshmi, by her aspect, formerly by Narayana's command—
तदा मथित्वा क्षीरोदं देवा दैत्यगणैः सह
At that time, the gods, together with the hosts of demons, churned the ocean of milk.
