पापिनां रक्तपूर्णं च वृक्षाग्रात्पततां परम्
Filled with the blood of sinners, falling in abundance from the tops of the trees,
गभीरं ध्वान्तसंयुक्तं रक्तकीटसमन्वितम्
Deep, filled with darkness, and swarming with blood-drinking insects,
धनुश्शतप्रमाणं च क्षुराकारास्त्रसंकुलम्
Measuring a hundred bows in size, crowded with weapons shaped like razors,
सूचीवाश्यास्त्रसंयुक्तं पापिरक्तौघपूरितम्
Filled with needle-like and awl-like weapons, overflowing with the blood of sinners,
गोधाह्वजन्तुभेदस्य मुखाकृति भयानकम्
With terrifying mouths in the form of the faces of monitor lizards and other creatures,
महापातकिना चैव महाक्लेशकरं परम्
And for the great sinners, it is the cause of the utmost suffering.
कुण्डं नरमुखाकारं धनुष्षोडशमानकम्
A pit shaped like a human mouth, measuring sixteen bows in length.
गजेन्द्राणां समूहेन व्याप्तं कुण्डाकृति स्थलम् 2.33.

तत्कीटभक्षितानां च दीनशब्दकृतां सदा

धनुस्त्रिंशत्प्रमाणं च कुण्डं वै गोमुखाकृति

भ्रमितं कालचक्रेण सन्ततं च भयानकम्
It is ceaselessly whirled by the wheel of time and is truly terrifying.
लक्षमानवमानं च गभीरमतिविस्तृतम्
It is a hundred thousand measures deep, exceedingly vast and profound.
कुत्रचित्तप्तलौहादिकुण्डं ताम्रादिकं तथा
Elsewhere, there are pits of heated iron and copper and the like.
पापिनां च प्रधानैश्च महापातकिभिर्युतम्
They are filled with the foremost sinners and those guilty of great crimes.
ताडितैर्मम दूतैश्च दण्डैश्च मुसलैस्तथा
Struck by my messengers with rods and pestles as well,
घूर्णमानं पतद्भिश्च मूर्च्छितैश्च मुहुर्मुहुः
They reel, falling down again and again, fainting repeatedly.
यावन्तः पापिनः सन्ति सर्वकुण्डेषु सुन्दरि
O beautiful one, as many sinners as there are, are in all these pits.
सुचिरं पतिताश्चैव भोगदेहविवर्जिताः 2.33.
They have fallen there for a long time, deprived of bodies fit for enjoyment.
कालनिर्मितसूत्रेण निबद्धा यत्र पापिनः
There, sinners are bound by a thread fashioned by Time.
निश्वासबन्धाः सुचिरं कुण्डानामन्तरे तथा
Within the pits, they are long held by the bond of breath.
दण्डेन मुसलेनैव मम दूतैश्च ताडिताः
Struck by my messengers with rods and pestles,
अवटः कूपभेदश्च यत्रोदं च तदाकृति
There is a chasm, a kind of well, and water of that form.
व्याप्तं महापापिभिश्च दग्धगात्रैश्च सन्ततम्
It is always filled with great sinners, their limbs scorched.
यत्तोयस्पर्शमात्रेण सर्व व्याधिश्च पापिनाम्
By the mere touch of its water, all diseases afflict the sinners.
सर्वे रुद्धाः पापिनश्च व्यथन्ते यत्र सन्ततम्
All the sinners are confined and constantly suffer there.
तप्तपांसुभिराकीर्णं ज्वलद्भिस्तु सुदग्धकैः
It is strewn with burning sand and scorched by blazing flames.
पततां पापिनां यत्र भवेदेव प्रकम्पनम्
Where sinners fall, there is indeed trembling.
क्रोशमाने च कुण्डे वै विदुस्तत्पाशवेष्टनम् 2.33.
When they cry out in the pit, they recognize the binding by ropes.
पातमात्रेण पापी च शूलेन ग्रथितो भवेत्
At the very moment of falling, the sinner is bound with a spear.
अतीव हिमतोये च क्रोशार्द्धं च प्रकम्पनम्
In water extremely cold, there is trembling for half a krosha.
