यथा सुप्रज्वलद्वह्नौ काष्ठानि च तृणानि च
Just as wood and grass are consumed in a blazing fire,
कामश्च कामिनं याति लोभ क्रोधौ ततः सति
Desire follows the desirer, and then greed and anger likewise.
कालः शुभाशुभं कर्म्म हर्षो भोगस्तथैव च
Time, good and bad deeds, joy, and enjoyment likewise follow.
शृणु देहस्य विवृतिं कथयामि यथागमम्
Listen, I will tell you about the dissolution of the body as taught in scripture.
देहिनां देहबीजं च स्रष्टुः सृष्टिविधौ परम्
The seed of the body for embodied beings is supreme in the act of creation by the Creator.
स कृत्रिमो नश्वरश्च भस्मसाच्च भवेदिह
It is artificial and perishable, and here it becomes ashes.
बिभर्ति सूक्ष्मदेहं च तद्रूपं भोगहेतवे 2.32.
He bears a subtle body of that form for the sake of enjoyment.
जलेन नष्टो देहो वा प्रहारे सुचिरं कृते
If the body is destroyed by water or by a prolonged blow,
तप्तद्रवे तप्तलौहे तप्तपाषाण एव च
Or in heated liquid, heated iron, or heated stone,
न च दग्धो न भग्नश्च भुंक्ते संतापमेव च कुण्डानां लक्षणं सर्वं निबोध कथयामि ते
He is neither burned nor broken, but only experiences suffering; listen, I will tell you all the characteristics of the pits.
यम उवाच अतीव निम्नं पाषाणभेदैश्च खचितं सति
Yama said: Extremely deep, embedded with fragments of stone,
न नश्वरं चाप्रलयं निर्मितं चेश्वरेच्छया
Not perishable, nor subject to dissolution, constructed by the will of the Lord,
ज्वलदङ्गाररूपं च शतहस्तशिखान्वितम्
Having the form of blazing embers, adorned with hundreds of flames,
महच्छब्दं प्रकुर्वद्भिः पापिभिः परिपूरितम्
Filled by sinners making loud noises.
प्रतप्तोदकपूर्णं च हिंस्रजन्तुसमन्वितम्
Filled with scalding water and accompanied by violent creatures.
प्रकुर्वता काकुशब्दं प्रहारैर्वर्णितेन च
Making a plaintive sound, described with blows.
तत्तक्षारोदकैः पूर्णं नक्रैश्च परिवेष्टितम्
Filled with the water from that chopping, surrounded by crocodiles.
त्राहीति शब्दं कुर्वद्भिर्मम दूतैश्च ताडितैः
Uttering cries of 'Save us!' as they are struck by my messengers.
ताडितैर्मम दूतैश्चाप्यनाहारैरुपद्रवैः ।। 2.33.
Struck by my messengers and afflicted by starvation and torments.
तप्तमूत्रद्रवैः पूर्णं मूत्रकीटैश्च संकुलम्
Filled with hot urine, crowded with urine-worms.
गव्यूतिमानं ध्वान्ताक्तं शब्दकृद्भिश्च सन्ततम्
Measuring a cow's length, covered in darkness, constantly filled with those making noise.
श्लैष्मपूर्णं क्रोशमितं वेष्टितं चेष्टितैः सदा
Filled with phlegm, a krosha in length, always surrounded by restless beings.
क्रोशार्द्धं गरपूर्णं च गरभोजिभिरन्वितम्
Half a krosha, filled with poison, accompanied by poison-eaters.
ताडितैर्मम दूतैश्च शब्दकृद्भिश्च कम्पितैः
Struck by my messengers and shaken by those making noise.
नेत्रयोर्मलपूर्णं च क्रोशार्द्धं कीटसंयुतम्
Half a krosha, filled with filth from the eyes, joined with insects.
वसारसेन पूर्णं च क्रोशतुर्य्यं सुदुस्सहम्
Filled with marrow and fat, four kroshas in length, extremely unbearable.
शुक्रपूर्णं क्रोशतुर्य्यं शुक्रकीटैश्च भक्षितैः
Four kroshas filled with semen, consumed by semen-worms.
दुर्गन्धिरक्तपूर्णं च वापीमानं गभीरकम्
Filled with foul-smelling blood, a deep reservoir.
पूर्णं नेत्राश्रुभिर्नृणां वाप्यर्द्धं पापिभिर्युतम् 2.33.
Filled with the tears from men's eyes, half a reservoir, accompanied by sinners.
नृणां गात्रमलैः पूर्णं तद्भक्ष्यैः पापिभिर्युतम्
Filled with the filth from men's bodies, accompanied by sinners who consume it.
