उपबर्हेण गन्धर्वो नारदस्तेन हेतुना
By the reason of Upabarhana the Gandharva, Nārada became thus.
ततः पुनर्नारदश्च स बभूव महानृषिः
Then again, Nārada became a great sage.
सौतिरुवाच सृष्टिं प्रचक्रुस्ते सर्वे विप्रेन्द्र नारदं विना
Sauti said: All the sages, O best of Brahmins, performed creation, except for Nārada.
मरीचेर्मनसो जातः कश्यपश्च प्रजापतिः
From Marīci's mind was born Kaśyapa, the lord of creatures.
प्रचेतसोऽपि मनसो गौतमश्च बभूव ह
From Pracetas' mind was also born Gautama.
मनोश्च शतरूपायां तिस्रः कन्याः प्रजज्ञिरे
From Manu and Śatarūpā three daughters were born.
प्रियव्रतोत्तानपादौ द्वौ च पुत्रौ मनोहरौ
Priyavrata and Uttānapāda, two sons delightful to the mind.
आकूतिं रुचये प्रादाद्दक्षायाथ प्रसूतिकाम्
He gave Ākūti to Ruci, and Prasūti to Dakṣa.
प्रसूत्यां दक्षबीजेन षष्टिकन्याः प्रजज्ञिरे
From Prasūti, by the seed of Dakṣa, sixty daughters were born.
शिवायैकां सतीं प्रादात्कश्यपाय त्रयोदश
One, Satī, was given to Śiva; thirteen were given to Kaśyapa.
नामानि धर्मपत्नीनां मत्तो विप्र निशामय
O Brahmin, listen from me to the names of the wives of Dharma.
शान्तेः पुत्रश्च सन्तोषः पुष्टेः पुत्रो महानभूत् 1.9.
Śānti's son is Santoṣa; Puṣṭi's son was the great Mahānabhūta.
क्षमापुत्रः सहिष्णुश्च श्रद्धापुत्रश्च धार्मिकः
Kṣamā's son is Sahiṣṇu, and Śraddhā's son is Dhārmika.
पूर्वपत्न्यां च मूर्त्यां च नरनारायणावृषी
From his former wife and from Mūrti were born the sages Nara and Nārāyaṇa.
नामानि रुद्रपत्नीनां सावधानं निबोध मे
Now, attentively hear from me the names of Rudra's wives.
कन्दली भीषणा रास्ना प्रमोचा भूषणा शुकी
Kandalī, Bhīṣaṇā, Rāsnā, Pramocā, Bhūṣaṇā, and Śukī—
सा सती स्वामिनिन्दायां तनुं तत्याज यज्ञतः
She, being devoted, abandoned her body in the sacrifice due to her husband's insult.
कश्यपस्य प्रियाणां च नामानि शृणु धार्मिक
Now hear, O righteous one, the names of Kaśyapa's beloved wives.
सर्पमाता तथा कद्रूर्विनता पक्षिसूस्तथा
Kadrū is the mother of serpents, and Vinatā is likewise the mother of birds.
सारमेयादिजन्तूनां सरमा सूश्चतुष्पदाम्
Saramā is the mother of the four-footed creatures such as dogs and others.
इन्द्रश्च द्वादशादित्या उपेन्द्राद्याः सुरा मुने
O sage, Indra, the twelve Ādityas, Upendra and others are the gods.
इन्द्रपुत्रो जयन्तश्च ब्रह्मञ्शच्यामजायत ।। । आदित्यस्य सवर्णायां कन्यायां विश्वकर्मणः।।1.9.
O Brahman, Jayanta, the son of Indra, was born from Śacī; and Viśvakarman was born from the maiden Savarṇā, daughter of Āditya.
शनैश्चरयमौ पुत्रौ कालिन्दी कन्यका तथा
Śanaiścara and Yama are sons, and Kālindī is a daughter as well.
शौनक उवाच वसुन्धरायां बलवांस्तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि
Śaunaka said: Please explain to me about the mighty one born from Vasundharā.
सौतिरुवाच विधाय सुन्दरीवेषमक्षता प्रौढयौवना
The Sūta said: Adorned in beautiful attire, unblemished, and in the fullness of youth—
मलये निर्जने रम्ये चारुचन्दनपल्लवे
On the lovely Malaya mountain, in a secluded and charming spot, amidst tender sandalwood leaves—
तं सुशीलं शयानं च शान्तं सस्मितमीप्सितम्
She saw him, noble and gentle, lying peacefully, with a smile, pleasing to behold.
सुरम्यां मालतीमालां ददौ तस्मै वरानना
The beautiful-faced one gave him a delightful garland of mālatī flowers.
उपेन्द्रस्तन्मनो ज्ञात्वा कामिनीं कामपीडिताम्
Upendra, knowing her mind and that she was tormented by desire,
तदङ्गसङ्गसंसक्ता मूर्छां प्राप सती तदा
She, clinging to his body, then fell into a swoon, O virtuous one.
