काकी जन्मसहस्राणि शतजन्मानि सूकरी
She is born as a crow for thousands of births, as a sow for a hundred births,
पारावती सप्तजनौ वानरी सप्तजन्मसु
As a pigeon for seven births, or as a monkey for seven births.
ततो भवेच्च रजकी यक्ष्मग्रस्ता च पुंश्चली
Then she becomes a washerwoman, afflicted with consumption, and a promiscuous woman.
वेश्या वसेद्वेधने च युग्मी वै दण्डताडने
She lives as a prostitute in poverty, and as a woman with two husbands, suffering beatings.
स्वैरिणी दलने चैव धृष्टा वै शोषणे तथा
As an unchaste woman she is torn apart, and as an audacious one, she is subjected to torment.
विण्मूत्रभक्षणं तत्र यावन्मन्वन्तरं सति
There, she eats excrement and urine for as long as a manvantara endures.
ब्राह्मणो ब्राह्मणीं गच्छेत्क्षत्त्रियामपि क्षत्रियः 2.31.
A brāhmaṇa should approach a brāhmaṇī, and a kṣatriya likewise a kṣatriyā.
स्ववर्णपरदारी च कषं याति तया सह
But one who goes to another's wife of his own varṇa goes to hell together with her.
ततो विप्रो भवेच्छुद्धश्चैवं च क्षत्रियादयः
Afterwards, the brāhmaṇa becomes pure, and so too the kṣatriya and the others.
क्षत्रियो ब्राह्मणीं गच्छेद्वैश्यो वाऽपि पतिव्रते
If a kṣatriya approaches a brāhmaṇī, or a vaiśya a chaste wife,
शूर्पाकारैश्च कृमिभिर्ब्राह्मण्या सह भक्षितः
He is eaten together with the brāhmaṇī by worms shaped like winnowing baskets.
तत्रैव यातनां भुंक्ते यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
There he endures torment for as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
करे धृत्वा च तुलसीं प्रतिज्ञां यो न पालयेत्
One who, holding tulasī in his hand, does not keep his vow,
गङ्गातोयं करे धृत्वा प्रतिज्ञां यो न पालयेत्
One who, holding Ganges water in his hand, does not keep his vow,
दत्त्वा च दक्षिणं हस्तं प्रतिज्ञां यो न पालयेत्
One who, after giving his right hand as a pledge, does not keep his vow,
मित्रद्रोही कृतघ्नश्च यो हि विश्वासघातकः 2.31.
One who betrays a friend, is ungrateful, or breaks trust,
एते तत्र वसन्त्येव यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
All these remain there for as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
चण्डालस्तुलसीस्पर्शी सप्तजन्मस्वतः शुचिः
A caṇḍāla who touches tulasī becomes pure for seven births.
शिलास्पर्शी विट्कृमिश्च सप्तजन्मसु सुन्दरि
One who touches a stone or is a worm in excrement, O beautiful one, for seven births—
दक्षहस्तप्रधाता च सर्पस्स्यात्सप्तजन्मसु
And one who gives with his right hand becomes a serpent for seven births.
मिथ्यावादी देवगृहे देवलः सप्तजन्मसु
One who speaks falsely in the house of the gods becomes a devala for seven births.
ततो भवन्ति मूकास्ते बधिराश्च त्रिजन्मसु
After that, they become mute and deaf for three births.
मित्रद्रोही च न कुलः कृतघ्नश्चापि गण्डकः
One who betrays a friend has no lineage, and an ungrateful person becomes a leper.
मिथ्यासाक्ष्यप्रदश्चैव भल्लूकः सप्तजन्मसु '
One who gives false testimony becomes a bear for seven births.
नित्यक्रियाविहीनश्च जडत्वेन युतो द्विजः
A twice-born who neglects daily rites is afflicted with dullness.
व्रतोपवासहीनश्च सद्वाक्यपरिनिंदकः 2.31.
One who neglects vows and fasts and reviles good speech—
जलजंतुर्भवेत्सोऽपि शतजन्मक्रमेण च
—such a person becomes an aquatic creature, in the course of a hundred births.
यो वा धनस्यापहारं देवाब्रह्मणयोश्चरेत्
Whoever steals the wealth of gods or Brahmins—
स्वयं याति च धूमांधं धूमध्वांतसमन्वितम्
—goes himself to a realm of smoky darkness, enveloped in gloom.
ततो मूषकजातिश्च शतजन्मानि भारते
After that, he is born in the race of mice for a hundred births in the land of Bharata.
