पुष्करे भास्करक्षेत्रे प्रभासे रासमण्डले
At Puṣkara, at the field of Bhāskara, at Prabhāsa, and in the circle of the rāsa,
सरस्वतीनदीतीरे पुण्ये वृन्दावने वने
On the bank of the Sarasvatī river, in the holy Vṛndāvana forest,
एष्वन्यत्र च यो दानं प्रतिगृह्णाति कामतः
Whoever, elsewhere or in these places, accepts gifts out of desire,
शूद्रातिरिक्तयाजी यो ग्रामयाजी च कीर्त्तितः
He who is a sacrificer beyond the Śūdra, and he who is a village sacrificer is described,
शूद्रपाकोपजीवी यः सूपकार इति स्मृतः
He who lives by cooking for Śūdras, is remembered as a cook,
उक्तं पूर्वप्रकरणे लक्षणं वृषलीपतेः
The mark of the lord of the outcast woman has been stated in the previous section,
कुंडान्यन्यानि ते यान्ति निबोध कथयामि ते
Other pits go to them; listen, I will tell you.
यम उवाच शुभकर्म्म स्वर्गबीजं नरकं च कुकर्म्मतः
Yama said: Virtuous deeds are the seed of heaven, and evil deeds lead to hell.
पुंश्चल्यन्नं च यो भुंक्ते वेश्यान्नं च पतिव्रते
Whoever eats the food of a wanton woman, or a chaste woman eats the food of a courtesan,
शतवर्षं कालसूत्रे स्थित्वा शूद्रो भवेद्ध्रुवम्
Having remained for a hundred years in the thread of time, he certainly becomes a Śūdra.
पतिव्रता चैकपत्नी द्वितीये कुलटा स्मृता
A chaste woman is one with a single husband; the second is remembered as a wanton woman.
वेश्या च पञ्चमे षष्ठे युग्मी च परिकीर्तिता
A courtesan is in the fifth, in the sixth a woman with two partners is described.
यो द्विजः कुलटां गच्छेद्धर्षिणीं पुंश्चलीमपि
A twice-born who approaches a wanton woman, or even a bold courtesan,
शताब्दं कुलटागामी धृष्टागामी चतुर्गुणम्
For a hundred years, one who goes to a wanton woman; for a bold approach, four times that.
युग्मीगामी दशगुणं वसेत्तत्र न संशयः
One who approaches another's mate will reside there with tenfold result, without doubt.
तदा हि सर्वगामी चेत्येवमाह पितामहः
At that time, if one goes to all women, so declares the Grandfather.
तित्तिरिः कुलटागामी धृष्टागामी च वायसः 2.31.
The partridge seeks another's mate, the adulteress does so, and the crow is shameless in this way.
युग्मीगामी सूकरश्च सप्तजन्मसु भारते
The boar also approaches another's mate for seven births in the land of Bharata.
यो भुंक्ते ज्ञानहीनश्च ग्रहणे चन्द्रसूय्यर्योः
Whoever eats without knowledge during an eclipse of the moon or sun,
ततो भवेन्मानवस्स्यादुदरव्याधिसंयुतः
After that, he is born as a human afflicted with diseases of the belly.
वाक्प्रदत्तां हि कन्यां च यश्चान्यस्मै ददाति च
He who gives away a maiden promised by word, or gives her to another,
दत्तापहारी यः साध्वि पाशवेष्टं शताब्दकम्
Or who steals what has been given, or a virtuous woman, is bound like a beast for a hundred years.
न पूजयेद्यो हि भक्त्या शिवलिङ्गं च पार्थिवम्
Whoever does not worship with devotion the earthen emblem of Shiva,
स्थित्वा शताब्दं तत्रैव श्वापदः सप्तजन्मसु
Having remained there for a hundred years, he becomes a wild animal for seven births.
करोति दण्डं यो विप्रे यद्भयात्कम्पते द्विजः
He who punishes a Brahmin, or at whose fear a Brahmin trembles,
प्रकोपवदना कोपात्स्वामिनं या च पश्यति
Or a woman who, out of anger, looks at her master with a wrathful face,
उल्कां ददाति वक्त्रे च सततं यमकिङ्करः 2.31.
The servant of Yama constantly places a meteor in her mouth.
ततो भवेन्मानवी च विधवा सप्तजन्मसु
After that, she is born as a widow among humans for seven births.
या ब्राह्मणी शूद्रभोग्या साऽन्धकूपं प्रयाति च
A Brahmin woman who is enjoyed by a Shudra goes to a dark well.
निवसेदतिसन्तप्ता यमदूतेन ताडिता
She dwells there, greatly tormented, struck by a messenger of Yama.
