ततो भवेन्मानवश्च नित्यरोगी दरिद्रकः
After that, he is born as a man, always sick and poor.
सामान्यद्रव्यचौरश्च याति नक्रमुखं युगम्
A thief of common goods goes to the crocodile-mouth hell for an age.
हन्ति गाश्च गजांश्चैव तुरगांश्च नरांस्तथा
He who kills cows, elephants, horses, and also men,
ताडितो यमदूतेन गजदन्तेन सन्ततम् गोजातिम्लेच्छजातिश्च ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः
Is constantly beaten by Yama's messenger with an elephant's tusk; then, being born as cattle or among outcastes, the man becomes purified.
जलं पिबन्तीं तृषितां गां वारयति यो नरः
Whoever prevents a thirsty cow from drinking water,
नरकं गोमुखाकारं कृमितप्तोदकान्वितम्
He goes to a hell shaped like a cow’s mouth, filled with water heated by worms.
ततो नरोऽपि गोहीनो महारोगी दरिद्रकः
After that, even as a human, the cow-hater becomes afflicted with great disease and poverty.
गोहत्यां ब्रह्महत्यां च यः करोत्यतिदेशिकीम्
Whoever commits the great sins of killing a cow or killing a Brahmin,
प्रतिग्राही च तीर्थेषु ग्रामयाजी च देवलः
Or who accepts gifts at holy places, or performs village sacrifices, or is a false priest,
गोहत्यां ब्रह्महत्यां च स्त्रीहत्यां च करोति यः 2.30.
Whoever commits the killing of a cow, a Brahmin, or a woman,
कुम्भीपाके स च वसेद्यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
He dwells in the hell called Kumbhīpāka for as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
क्षणं पतति वह्नौ च क्षणं पतति कण्टके
For a moment he falls into fire, for a moment onto thorns,
क्षणं च तप्तपाषाणे तप्तलोहे क्षणं ततः
For a moment onto heated stones, then for a moment onto heated iron.
काकश्च सप्तजन्मानि सर्पस्स्यात्सप्तजन्मसु
He becomes a crow for seven births, and a snake for seven births.
ततो भवेत्स वृषणो गलत्कुष्ठी दरिद्रकः
After that, he is born as a castrated man, afflicted with leprosy and poverty.
सावित्र्युवाच का वा नृणामगम्या वा को वा सन्ध्याविहीनकः
Savitri said: Who among men is considered unapproachable, and who is one who neglects the twilight worship?
अदीक्षितः पुमान्को वा को वा तीर्थे प्रतिग्रही
Who is an undedicated man, who accepts gifts at holy places?
शूद्राणां सूपकारः कः प्रमत्तो वृषलीपतिः
Who is a cook for Shudras, who is careless, and who is the husband of a low-caste woman?
यम उवाच शिवे च शिवलिङ्गे वा सूर्य्ये सूर्य्यमणौ तथा
Yama said: Whether in Shiva or the Shiva-liṅga, or in the Sun or the solar jewel,
गणेशे वा तदर्च्चायामेवं सर्वत्र सुन्दरि 2.30.
Or in Ganesha, or in their images—so it is everywhere, O beautiful one.
स्वगुरौ स्वेष्टदेवे वा जन्मदातरि मातरि
In one's own guru, in one's chosen deity, in the father who gave birth, or in the mother,
वैष्णवेष्वन्यभक्तेषु ब्राह्मणेष्वितरेषु च
In the Vaishnavas, in other devotees, and in other Brahmins as well.
यो मूढो विष्णुनैवेद्ये चान्यनैवेद्यके तथा करोति समतां यो हि ब्रह्महत्यां लभेत्तु सः
Whoever, foolishly, treats food offered to Vishnu and other offerings as equal, he attains the sin of killing a Brahmin.
सर्वेश्वरेश्वरे कृष्णे सर्वकारणकारणे
To Krishna, the Lord of all lords, the cause of all causes,
माययाऽनेकरूपे वाऽप्येक एव हि निर्गुणे
Who, by Maya, appears in many forms, yet is one and without attributes,
पितृदेवार्चनां पौर्वापरां वेदविनिर्मिताम्
The worship of ancestors and gods, established by the Vedas from ancient times,
ये निन्दन्ति हृषीकेशं तन्मन्त्रोपासकं तथा
Those who revile Hrishikesha, and those who worship him with his mantra,
शिवं शिवस्वरूपं च कृष्णप्राणाधिकं प्रियम्
Shiva, the embodiment of auspiciousness, who is dearer to Krishna than life,
प्रधानं वैष्णवानां च देवानां सव्यमीश्वरम्
The chief among Vaishnavas, the lord of the gods, the sovereign ruler,
ये विष्णुमायां निन्दन्ति विष्णुभक्तिप्रदां सतीम् 2.30.
Those who revile Vishnu's Maya, which bestows devotion to Vishnu and is pure,
