वसेद्दुर्गन्धकुंडे च दुर्गन्धं च लभेत्सदा
He dwells in a foul-smelling pit and always obtains foul odor.
दुर्गंधिकः सप्तजनौ मृगनाभिस्त्रिजन्मनि
He is foul-smelling for seven lifetimes, and for three lifetimes as a musk deer.
बलेनैव खलत्वेन हिंसारूपेण वा सति
If, by force, wickedness, or in the form of violence,
स वसेत्तप्तशूले च भवेत्ततो दिवानिशम्
He dwells on a heated stake, and remains there day and night.
भस्मसान्न भवत्येव भोगदेहो न नश्यति
His body becomes ashen, yet the body of enjoyment does not perish.
शब्दं करोत्यनाहारो यमदूतेन ताडितः
Without food, he makes a sound, struck by the servants of Yama.
ततो भवेद्भूमिहीनो दरिद्रश्च ततः शुचिः
Then he becomes landless, poor, and pure thereafter.
छिनत्ति जीविनः खङ्गैर्दयाहीनः सुदारुणः
He, devoid of compassion and exceedingly cruel, cuts down living beings with swords.
असिपत्रे च स वसेद्यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
He dwells on the sword-leaf tree as long as the fourteen Indras reign.
छिन्नाङ्गश्च भवेत्पापी खङ्गधारेण सन्ततम् 2.30.
That sinner becomes maimed, constantly struck by the sword's edge.
चण्डालः शतजन्मानि भारते सूकरो भवेत्
For a hundred births he is born a caṇḍāla, and in Bhārata he becomes a pig.
व्याघ्रश्च सप्तजन्मानि वृकश्चैव त्रिजन्मनि
He becomes a tiger for seven births and a wolf for three births.
ग्रामं वा नगरं वाऽपि दाहनं यः करोति च
Whoever sets fire to a village or a city,
ततः प्रेतो भवेत्सद्यो वह्निवक्त्रो भ्रमेन्महीम्
He immediately becomes a preta, with a mouth of fire, wandering the earth.
ततो भवेन्महाशूली मानवः सप्तजन्मसु
After that, he is born as a great spear-bearer among men for seven births.
परकर्णोपजापेन परनिन्दां करोति यः
Whoever slanders others by whispering in another's ear,
सूचीमुखे स च वसेत्सूचीविद्धो युगत्रयम्
He dwells in the needle-mouth hell, pierced by needles for three ages.
वज्रकीटः सप्तजनौ भस्मकीटस्ततः परम्
He becomes a thunderbolt-insect for seven births, and then a cinder-insect thereafter.
गृहिणां च गृहं भित्त्वा वस्तुतेयं करोति यः
Whoever breaks into a householder's home and steals property,
ततो भवेत्सप्तजनौ गोजातिर्व्याधिसंयुतः 2.30.
He is born for seven births as cattle, afflicted with disease.
ततो भवेन्मानवश्च नित्यरोगी दरिद्रकः
After that, he is born as a man, always sick and poor.
सामान्यद्रव्यचौरश्च याति नक्रमुखं युगम्
A thief of common goods goes to the crocodile-mouth hell for an age.
हन्ति गाश्च गजांश्चैव तुरगांश्च नरांस्तथा
He who kills cows, elephants, horses, and also men,
ताडितो यमदूतेन गजदन्तेन सन्ततम् गोजातिम्लेच्छजातिश्च ततः शुद्धो भवेन्नरः
Is constantly beaten by Yama's messenger with an elephant's tusk; then, being born as cattle or among outcastes, the man becomes purified.
जलं पिबन्तीं तृषितां गां वारयति यो नरः
Whoever prevents a thirsty cow from drinking water,
नरकं गोमुखाकारं कृमितप्तोदकान्वितम्
He goes to a hell shaped like a cow’s mouth, filled with water heated by worms.
ततो नरोऽपि गोहीनो महारोगी दरिद्रकः
After that, even as a human, the cow-hater becomes afflicted with great disease and poverty.
गोहत्यां ब्रह्महत्यां च यः करोत्यतिदेशिकीम्
Whoever commits the great sins of killing a cow or killing a Brahmin,
प्रतिग्राही च तीर्थेषु ग्रामयाजी च देवलः
Or who accepts gifts at holy places, or performs village sacrifices, or is a false priest,
गोहत्यां ब्रह्महत्यां च स्त्रीहत्यां च करोति यः 2.30.
Whoever commits the killing of a cow, a Brahmin, or a woman,
