व्रतानामुपवासानां श्राद्धादीनां च संयमे
In the matter of vows, fasts, and restraint regarding śrāddha and similar rites—
स च तिष्ठति कुण्डेषु नखादीनां च सुन्दरि
He remains in pits among nails and the like, O beautiful one.
सकेशं पार्थिवं लिङ्गं यो वाऽर्चयति भारते 2.30.
Whoever worships a Śiva-liṅga made of earth, with hair upon it, in Bharata—
तदन्ते यावनीं योनिं प्रयाति हरकोपतः
At the end, by Śiva's wrath, he goes to the womb of a Yavana woman.
पितॄणां यो विष्णुपदे पिण्डं नैव ददाति च
He who does not offer the ancestral cake to the forefathers at the abode of Vishnu—
ततः स्वयोनिं संप्राप्य खञ्जः सप्तसु जन्मसु
Then, having attained his own birth again, he is lame for seven lifetimes.
यः सेवते महामूढो गुर्विणीं च स्वकामिनीम्
That greatly deluded one who serves a woman heavy with child or his own beloved—
अवीरान्नं च यो भुङ्क्ते ऋतुस्नातान्नमेव च
He who eats food not offered to the gods, or food touched by a menstruating woman—
स व्रजेद्राजकीं योनिं कर्मकारीं च सप्तसु
He goes to the birth of a menial or a laborer for seven lifetimes.
यो हि घर्माक्तहस्तेन देवद्रव्यमुपस्पृशेत्
Whoever, with hands smeared with sweat, touches offerings meant for the gods—
यः शूद्रेणाभ्यनुज्ञातो भुङ्क्ते शूद्रान्नमेव च
He who, having been permitted by a Shudra, eats food belonging to a Shudra—
वाग्दुष्टा कटुवाचा या ताडयेत्स्वामिनं सदा 2.30.
A woman of wicked speech, who always speaks harshly and strikes her husband—
ताडिता यमदूतेन दण्डेन च चतुर्युगम्
She is beaten by the messenger of Yama with a staff for four ages.
विषेण जीविनं हन्ति निर्दयो यो हि पामरः
The cruel and base man who kills a living being with poison—
ततो भवेन्नृघाती च व्रणी स्यात्सप्तजन्मसु
After that, he becomes a killer of men and is afflicted with sores for seven births.
दण्डेन ताडयेद्यो हि वृषं च वृषवाहकः
He who, being a bull-driver, strikes a bull with a staff—
प्रतप्ततैलकुण्डे च स तिष्ठति चतुर्युगम्
He stands in a cauldron of boiling oil for four ages.
दन्तेन हन्ति जीवं यो लौहेन बडिशेन वा
He who kills a living being with his teeth or with an iron hook—
ततः स्वयोनिं संप्राप्य चोदरव्याधिसंयुतः
Then, having attained his own birth again, he is afflicted with abdominal disease.
यो भुंक्ते च वृथा मांसं मत्स्यभोजी च ब्राह्मणः
A Brahmin who eats meat without reason, or who eats fish—
स्वलोममानवर्षं च तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति
He remains there, eating his own flesh, for as many years as there are hairs on his body.
ब्राह्मणः शूद्रयाजी यः शूद्रश्राद्धान्नभोजकः 2.30.
A Brahmin who performs sacrifices for Shudras, or who eats food from a Shudra's funeral offering—
यावल्लोमप्रमाणाब्दं यजमानस्य सुव्रते
O virtuous one, for as many years as there are hairs on the sacrificer's body—
ततो भारतमागत्य स शूद्रः सप्तजन्मसु
after that, coming to the land of Bharata, that person is born as a Shudra for seven lifetimes.
लघुं कूरं महान्तं वा सर्पं हन्ति च यो नरः
Whoever kills a snake—whether small, fierce, or large—
सर्पेण भक्षितः सोऽपि यमदूतेन ताडितः
he, being eaten by a snake and struck by a messenger of Yama,
ततो भवेन्मानवश्चाप्यल्पायुर्दद्रुसंयुतः
after that, he is born as a human with a short life and afflicted by leprosy.
विधिं प्रकल्प्य जीवांश्च क्षुद्रजन्तूंश्च हन्ति यः
Whoever, intentionally, kills living beings and small creatures—
दिवानिशं भक्षितस्तैरनाहारश्च शब्दकृत्
day and night, he is eaten by them, goes without food, and makes cries of pain.
ततो भवेत्क्षुद्रजन्तुर्जातिर्वै यावती स्मृता
after that, he is born in the species of those very small creatures, for as many births as are remembered.
