स्वदत्तां परदत्तां वा ब्रह्मवृत्तिं हरेत्तु यः
Whoever takes for himself the livelihood of a brāhmaṇa, whether given by himself or by another—
षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि विड्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति
—he dwells there as an eater of excrement for six thousand years.
परकीयतडागे च तडागं यः करोति च 2.30.
Whoever constructs a pond in another’s pond—
तद्रेणुमानवर्षं च तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति
—he remains there, eating the dust of that pond, for as many years as there are particles of dust.
एकाकी मिष्टमश्नाति श्लेष्मकुण्डं प्रयाति सः
He who eats delicious food alone goes to the phlegm-filled pool.
पूर्णमब्दशतं चैव स प्रेतो भारते भवेत्
He becomes a preta in Bhārata for a full hundred years.
पितरं मातरं चैव गुरुं भार्य्यां सुतं सुताम्
Whoever harms father, mother, teacher, wife, son, or daughter—
पूर्णमब्दसहस्रं च तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति
—remains there, eating, for a full thousand years.
दृष्ट्वातिथिं वक्रचक्षुः करोति यो हि मानवः
A man who looks upon a guest with a crooked eye—
यानि कानि च पापानि ब्रह्महत्यादिकानि च
—whatever sins there are, including the killing of a brāhmaṇa—
पूर्णमब्दशतं चैव तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति
—he remains there, eating, for a full hundred years.
दत्त्वा द्रव्यं च विप्राय चान्यस्मै दीयते यदि
If, after giving wealth to a brāhmaṇa, it is given to someone else—
ततो भवेत्स चण्डालस्त्रिजन्मनि ततः शुचिः ततो भवेन्मानवश्च दरिद्रोऽल्पायुरेव च ।।2.30.
—then he becomes a caṇḍāla in his next birth, then pure, then a man who is poor and short-lived.
पुमांसं कामिनी वाऽपि कामिनीं वा पुमानथ
If a man approaches a woman, or a woman a man, with lust—
पूर्णमब्दशतं चैव तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति
—he remains there, eating, for a full hundred years.
सन्ताड्य च गुरुं विप्रं रक्तपातं च कारयेत्
If one strikes a teacher or a brāhmaṇa, or causes blood to flow—
ततो भवेद्व्याधजन्म सप्तजन्मसु भारते
Then, he is born as a diseased person for seven births in the land of Bharata.
अश्रु स्रवन्तं गायन्तं भक्तं दृष्ट्वा च गद्गदम्
Seeing a devotee singing with tears flowing and a choked voice—
स वसेदश्रुकुण्डे च तद्भोजी शतवत्सरम्
He dwells at the Ashru-kunda and eats there for a hundred years.
करोति खलतां शश्वदशुद्धहृदयो नरः
A man whose heart is always impure becomes wicked.
ततः स गार्दभीं योनिमवाप्नोति त्रिजन्मनि
Then, he attains the womb of a she-ass for three births.
बधिरं यो हसत्येव निन्दत्येव हि मानवः
Whoever laughs at or insults a deaf person—
ततो भवेत्स बधिरो दरिद्रः सप्तजन्मसु ।। 2.30.
He then becomes deaf and poor for seven births.
लोभात्स्वपालनार्थाय जीविनं हन्ति यो नरः
Out of greed, the man who kills a living being for the sake of protecting his own wealth—
ततो भवेत्स शशको मीनश्च सप्तजन्मसु
He then becomes a hare and a fish for seven births.
स्वकन्यापालनं कृत्वा विक्रीणाति हि यो नरः
The man who, after raising his own daughter, sells her—
कन्यालोमप्रमाणाब्दं तद्भोजी तत्र तिष्ठति
He remains there, eating for as many years as the number of hairs on the daughter's body.
मांसभारं मूर्ध्नि कृत्वा रक्तधारां लिहेत्क्षुधा
With a load of flesh on his head, he licks streams of blood out of hunger.
षष्टिवर्षसहस्राणि व्याधश्च सप्तजन्मसु
For six thousand years, he is a hunter for seven births.
सप्तजन्मसु मण्डूको जलौकाः सप्तजन्मसु
For seven births, he is a frog; for seven births, a leech.
