यज्जन्म ब्रह्मणो वंशे ज्वलन्तं ब्रह्मतेजसा
His birth is in the lineage of Brahmā, blazing with the radiance of Brahman.
इत्युक्त्वा सा च सावित्री प्रणनाम यमं मुने
Having spoken thus, Savitri bowed to Yama, O sage.
इदं यमाष्टकं नित्यं प्रातरुत्थाय यः पठेत्
Whoever recites this Yamāṣṭaka daily upon rising in the morning—
महापापी यदि पठेन्नित्यं भक्त्या च नारद
Even if he is a great sinner, if he recites it daily with devotion, O Nārada—
इति श्रीब्रह्मवैवर्त्ते महापुराणे द्वितीये प्रकृतिखण्डे नारदनारायणसंवादे सावित्रीकृतयमस्तोत्रं नामाष्टाविंशोऽध्यायः
Thus, in the great Purāṇa called the Brahmavaivarta, in the second book, the Prakṛti section, in the dialogue between Nārada and Nārāyaṇa, ends the twenty-eighth chapter named 'The Hymn to Yama composed by Sāvitrī.'
श्रीनारायण उवाच कर्म्माशुभविपाकं च तामुवाच रवेः सुतः
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: The son of the Sun spoke to her about the consequences of evil deeds—
यम उवाच कर्माशुभविपाकं च कथयामि निशामय
Yama said: I will tell you about the results of evil actions; listen attentively.
नानाप्रकारं स्वर्गं च याति जीवः सुकर्मणा
By good deeds, the soul attains various kinds of heaven.
नरकाणां च कुण्डानि सन्ति नानाविधानि च
There are also many kinds of pits of hell.
विस्तृतानि गभीराणि क्लेशदानि च जीविनाम्
They are vast, deep, and cause suffering to living beings.
षडशीतिश्च कुण्डानि संयमन्यां च सन्ति च
There are eighty-six pits, and also others in the realm of restraint.
वह्निकुण्डं तप्तकुण्डं क्षमकुण्डं भयानकम्
There is the pit of fire, the heated pit, the pit of endurance, and the dreadful one.
गरकुण्डं दूषिकाकुण्डं वसाकुण्डं तथैव च
There is the pit of poison, the pit of filth, and likewise the pit of fat.
कुण्डं गात्रमलानां च कर्णविट्कुण्डमेव च
There is the pit for bodily impurities, and also the pit for earwax.
लोम्नां कुण्डं केशकुण्डमस्थिकुण्डं च दुःखदम् 2.29.
There is the pit of hair, the pit of head hair, and the pit of bones, all causing pain.
तीक्ष्णकण्टककुण्डं च विषकुण्डं च विघ्नदम्
There is the pit of sharp thorns, the pit of poison, both causing obstacles.
प्रतप्ततैलकुण्डं च दन्तकुण्डं च दुर्वहम्
There is the pit of boiling oil, and the pit of teeth, both unbearable.
मशकुण्डं दंशकुण्डं भीमं गरलकुण्डकम्
There is the pit of flies, the pit of biting insects, and the terrible pit of venom.
शरकुण्डं शूलकुण्ड खड्गकुण्डं च भीषणम्
There is the pit of arrows, the pit of spears, and the dreadful pit of swords.
सञ्चालकुण्डं वाजकुण्डं बन्धकुण्डं सुदुस्तरम्
There is the pit of shaking, the pit of horses, and the pit of bondage, all extremely difficult to cross.
लालाकुण्डमसिकुण्डं चूर्णकुण्डं सुदारुणम्
The pit of saliva, the pit of ashes, the pit of powder, exceedingly dreadful,
ज्वालकुण्डं भस्मकुण्डं पूतिकुण्डं च सुन्दरि
The pit of flames, the pit of ashes, the pit of putrefaction, O beautiful one,
गोधामुखं नक्रमुखं गजदंशं च गोमुखम्
The mouth of the monitor lizard, the mouth of the crocodile, the bite of the elephant, and the mouth of the cow,
पांशुभोजं पाशवेष्टं शूलप्रोतं प्रकम्पनम्
Eating earth, being bound by a noose, being impaled on a spear, and trembling,
जालबन्धं देहचूर्णं दलनं शोषणङ्करम् 2.29.
Being enclosed in a net, the body reduced to powder, crushing, and causing desiccation.
कुण्डान्येतानि सावित्रि पापिनां क्लेशदानि च
These pits, O Sāvitrī, are the sources of torment for the sinful.
दण्डहस्तैः शूलहस्तैः पाशहस्तैर्भयङ्करैः
With those bearing rods, those bearing spears, those bearing nooses, terrifying,
तमोयुक्तैर्दयाहीनैर्दुर्निवार्य्यं च सर्वतः
Endowed with darkness, devoid of compassion, impossible to escape from on all sides,
योगयुक्तैः सिद्धयोगैर्नानारूपधरैर्वरैः
Endowed with yoga, accomplished in yoga, assuming various excellent forms,
स्वकर्मनिरतैः शैवैः शाक्तैः सौरैश्च गाणपैः
Engaged in their own actions, Shaivas, Shaktas, Sauras, and Gāṇapatas,
