अश्वत्थवृक्षमारोप्य प्रतिष्ठां च करोति यः
Whoever plants a sacred fig tree and establishes its foundation,
पुष्पोद्यानं यो ददाति सावित्रि सर्वभूतये 2.26.
O Sāvitrī, whoever gives a flower garden for the benefit of all beings,
यो ददाति विमानं च विष्णवे भारते सति
Whoever gives a temple to Viṣṇu in the land of Bharata,
चित्रयुक्ते च विपुले फलं तस्य चतुर्गुणम्
if it is adorned and spacious, his reward is fourfold.
यो ददाति भक्तियुक्तो हरये दोलमन्दिरम्
Whoever, filled with devotion, gives a swing-temple to Hari,
राजमार्गं सौधयुक्तं यः करोति पतिव्रते
Whoever constructs a royal road with mansions, O chaste one,
ब्राह्मणेभ्योऽपि देवेभ्यो दाने समफलं लभेत्
receives equal fruit from giving to Brāhmaṇas or to the gods.
भुक्त्वा स्वर्गादिकं सौख्यं पुनरायान्ति भारते
After enjoying happiness in heaven and beyond, they return to the land of Bharata.
भारते पुण्यवान्विप्रो भुक्त्वा स्वर्गादिकं परम्
A virtuous Brāhmaṇa in Bharata, after enjoying supreme happiness in heaven and beyond,
क्षत्रियो वाऽपि वैश्यो वा कल्पकोटिशतेन च
even a Kṣatriya or a Vaiśya, after a hundred million kalpas,
स्वधर्मरहिता विप्रा नानायोनिं व्रजन्ति च
Brahmins who are devoid of their own duty are born into various wombs.
नाभुक्तं क्षीयते कर्म्म कल्पकोटिशतैरपि 2.26.
An action not yet experienced does not perish, even in hundreds of millions of aeons.
अवश्यमेव भोक्तव्यं कृतं कर्म शुभाशुभम्
Indeed, whatever action is done, whether good or bad, must certainly be experienced.
एतत्ते कथितं सर्वं किं भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि
All this has been explained to you; what more do you wish to hear?
सावित्र्युवाच मानवाः पुण्यवन्तश्च तन्मे व्याख्यातुमर्हसि
Savitri said: You should explain to me about men who are virtuous.
यम उवाच अन्नप्रमाणवर्ष च शक्रलोके महीयते
Yama said: The measure of food and rain is honored in the world of Indra.
अन्नदानात्परं दानं न भूतं न भविष्यति
There has never been, nor will there be, a gift greater than the gift of food.
देवेभ्यो ब्राह्मणेभ्यो वा ददाति चासनं यदि
If one gives a seat to the gods or to Brahmins,
यो ददाति च विप्राय दिव्यां धेनुं पयस्विनीम्
Whoever gives to a Brahmin a divine cow that yields milk,
चतुर्गुणं पुण्यदिने तीर्थे शतगुणं फलम्
On an auspicious day, the fruit is fourfold; at a sacred place, it is a hundredfold.
गां यो ददाति विप्राय भारते भक्तिपूर्वकम्
Whoever gives a cow to a Brahmin in Bharat with devotion,
यश्चोभयमुखीदानं करोति ब्राह्मणाय च
And whoever makes a gift that benefits both sides to a Brahmin,
यो ददाति ब्राह्मणाय शालिग्रामं सवस्त्रकम्
Whoever gives a Shaligrama stone with cloth to a Brahmin,
यो ददाति ब्राह्मणाय छत्रं च सुमनोहरम् 2.27.
Whoever gives a most delightful umbrella to a Brahmin,
विप्राय पादुकायुग्मं यो ददाति च भारते
Whoever gives a pair of sandals to a Brahmin in Bharat,
यो ददाति ब्राह्मणाय शय्यां दिव्यां मनोहराम्
Whoever gives a divine and charming bed to a Brahmin,
यो ददाति प्रदीपं च देवाय ब्राह्मणाय च
Whoever gives a lamp to a god or to a Brahmin,
सम्प्राप्य मानवीं योनिं चक्षुष्मांश्च भवेद्ध्रुवम्
Having attained a human birth, he certainly becomes one who possesses sight.
करोति गजदानं च यो हि विप्राय भारते
Whoever gives an elephant as a gift to a Brahmin in the land of Bharata,
भारते योऽश्वदानं च करोति ब्राह्मणाय च
Whoever gives a horse as a gift to a Brahmin in Bharata,
