स्वधर्म्मनिरताश्चैवं वर्णाश्चत्वार एव च
Thus, those devoted to their own duty, and the four varṇas as well,
स्वधर्म्मरहितास्ते च नरकं यान्ति हि ध्रुवम् 2.26.
But those who neglect their own duty surely go to hell.
स्वधर्मनिरता विप्राः स्वधर्मनिरताय च
Brāhmaṇas devoted to their own duty, and to those devoted to their own duty,
वसंति तत्र ते साध्वि यावदिन्द्राश्चतुर्दश
O virtuous one, they dwell there as long as the fourteen Indras exist.
सकामा यांति तल्लोकं न निष्कामाश्च वैष्णवाः
Those with desires reach that world, but the desireless Vaiṣṇavas do not.
गव्यं च रजतं भार्यां वस्त्रं सस्यं फलं जलम्
Cows, silver, wives, garments, grain, fruits, and water,
वसंति ते च तल्लोकं यावन्मन्वन्तरं सति
They dwell in that world as long as a manvantara lasts.
ये ददति सुवर्णं च गां च ताम्रादिकं सति
Those who give gold, cows, copper, and the like,
वसन्ति तत्र ते लोके वर्षाणामयुतं सति
They dwell in that world for ten thousand years.
ददाति भूमिं विप्रेभ्यो धान्यानि विपुलानि च
He who gives land and abundant grains to Brāhmaṇas,
तत्रैव निवसत्येव यावच्चन्द्रदिवाकरौ
He dwells there as long as the moon and sun endure.
गृहं ददंति विप्राय ये जना भक्तिपूर्वकम् 2.26.
Those people who give a house to a Brāhmaṇa with devotion,
गृहरेणुप्रमाणाब्दं दानं पुण्यदिने यदि
If, on an auspicious day, one gives in charity for as many years as there are particles of dust in a house,
यस्मै यस्मै च देवाय यो ददाति गृहं नरः
to whichever deity and to whomever a man gives a house,
सौधे चतुर्गुणं पुण्यं पूर्त्ते शतगुणं फलम्
the merit gained from building a mansion is four times greater, and from constructing public works, the fruit is a hundredfold.
यो ददाति तडागं च सर्वभूताय भारते
Whoever gives a pond for the benefit of all beings in the land of Bharata,
वाप्यां फलं शतगुणं प्राप्नोति मानवस्ततः
a person thereby attains a hundredfold reward from a reservoir.
धनुश्चतुःसहस्रेण दैर्घ्यमानेन निश्चितम्
It is established that the measure of length is four thousand bows.
दशवापीसमा कन्या यदि पात्रे प्रदीयते
If a maiden is given to a worthy recipient, it is equal in merit to ten reservoirs.
तत्फलं च तडागे च पङ्कोद्धारेण तत्फलम्
That same fruit is obtained from a pond, and from removing mud from it, that fruit is also gained.
अश्वत्थवृक्षमारोप्य प्रतिष्ठां च करोति यः
Whoever plants a sacred fig tree and establishes its foundation,
पुष्पोद्यानं यो ददाति सावित्रि सर्वभूतये 2.26.
O Sāvitrī, whoever gives a flower garden for the benefit of all beings,
यो ददाति विमानं च विष्णवे भारते सति
Whoever gives a temple to Viṣṇu in the land of Bharata,
चित्रयुक्ते च विपुले फलं तस्य चतुर्गुणम्
if it is adorned and spacious, his reward is fourfold.
यो ददाति भक्तियुक्तो हरये दोलमन्दिरम्
Whoever, filled with devotion, gives a swing-temple to Hari,
राजमार्गं सौधयुक्तं यः करोति पतिव्रते
Whoever constructs a royal road with mansions, O chaste one,
ब्राह्मणेभ्योऽपि देवेभ्यो दाने समफलं लभेत्
receives equal fruit from giving to Brāhmaṇas or to the gods.
भुक्त्वा स्वर्गादिकं सौख्यं पुनरायान्ति भारते
After enjoying happiness in heaven and beyond, they return to the land of Bharata.
भारते पुण्यवान्विप्रो भुक्त्वा स्वर्गादिकं परम्
A virtuous Brāhmaṇa in Bharata, after enjoying supreme happiness in heaven and beyond,
क्षत्रियो वाऽपि वैश्यो वा कल्पकोटिशतेन च
even a Kṣatriya or a Vaiśya, after a hundred million kalpas,
