स्वकर्मणा सर्वसिद्धिममरत्वं लभेद् ध्रुवम्
By one's own actions, one attains all accomplishments and immortality, certainly.
कर्मणा ब्राह्मणत्वं च मुक्तत्वं च स्वकर्मणा 2.24.
By action, one becomes a Brahmin, and by one's own actions, one attains liberation.
कर्मणा च मुनीन्द्रत्वं तपस्वित्वं च कर्मणा
By action, one becomes a great sage, and by action, one becomes an ascetic.
कर्मणा चैव शूद्रत्वमन्त्यजत्वं स्वकर्मणा
By action, one becomes a Shudra, and by one's own actions, one becomes of the lowest birth.
स्वकर्मणा च म्लेच्छत्वं लभते नात्र संशयः
By one's own actions, one attains the state of a foreigner; there is no doubt about this.
स्वकर्मणा च शैलत्वं वृक्षत्वं च स्वकर्मणा
By one's own actions, one becomes a mountain, and by one's own actions, one becomes a tree.
स्वकर्मणा क्षुद्रजन्तुः कृमित्वं च स्वकर्मणा
By one's own actions, one becomes a small creature, and by one's own actions, one becomes a worm.
स्वकर्मणा राक्षसत्वं किन्नरत्वं स्वकर्मणा
By one's own actions, one becomes a rakshasa, and by one's own actions, one becomes a kinnara.
स्वकर्मणा च प्रेतत्वं वेतालत्वं स्वकर्मणा
By one's own actions, one becomes a ghost, and by one's own actions, one becomes a vampire.
दैत्यत्वं दानवत्वं चाप्यसुरत्वं स्वकर्मणा
By one's own actions, one becomes a daitya, a danava, and indeed an asura.
कर्मणा सुन्दरोऽरोगी महारोगी च कर्मणा
By action, one is handsome and healthy; by action, one is afflicted with great disease.
कर्मणा नरकं यान्ति जीवाः स्वर्गं स्वकर्मणा 2.24.
By action, living beings go to hell; by their own actions, they go to heaven.
कर्मणा चन्द्रलोकं च वह्निलोकं स्वकर्मणा
By his actions, a person attains the world of the moon and the world of fire, according to his own deeds.
तथा कुबेरलोकं च नरो याति स्वकर्मणा
In the same way, by his own actions, a man reaches the world of Kubera.
याति नक्षत्रलोकं च सत्यलोकं स्वकर्मणा
He attains the world of the stars and the world of truth by his own actions.
स्वकर्मणा च पातालं ब्रह्मलोकं स्वकर्मणा
By his own actions, he goes to Pātāla, and by his own actions, to the world of Brahmā.
कर्मणा याति वैकुण्ठं गोलोकं च निरामयम्
By his actions, he attains Vaikuṇṭha and the flawless Goloka.
कर्मणा कोटिकल्पायुः क्षीणायुश्च स्वकर्मणा
By his actions, he gains a lifespan of many millions of aeons, or his life is diminished by his own actions.
इत्येवं कथितं सर्वं मया तत्त्वं च सुन्दरि
Thus, O beautiful one, I have explained everything and the truth to you.
श्रीनारायण उवाच तुष्टाव परया भक्त्या तमुवाच मनस्विनी
Śrī Nārāyaṇa said: With supreme devotion, she praised him, and the wise lady spoke.
सावित्र्युवाच कर्म निर्मूलयन्त्येव केन वा साधवो जनाः
Sāvitrī said: By what means do the virtuous truly uproot karma?
कर्मणां बीजरूपः कः को वा कर्म्मफलप्रदः
What is the seed-form of actions, and who indeed bestows the fruit of actions?
को वा कर्मफलं भुङ्क्ते को वा निर्लिप्त एव च
Who experiences the fruit of actions, and who remains untouched?
किं विज्ञानं मनो बुद्धिः के वा प्राणाः शरीरिणाम्
What is knowledge, mind, and intellect, and who are the life-forces in embodied beings?
भोक्ता भोजयिता को वा को भोगः का च निष्कृतिः
Who is the enjoyer, who causes enjoyment, what is enjoyment, and what is expiation?
यम उवाच अवैदिकं तु यत्कर्म तदेवाशुभमेव च
Yama said: That action which is not in accordance with the Vedas is indeed unwholesome.
अहैतुकी विष्णुसेवा सङ्कल्परहिता सताम्
Selfless service to Viṣṇu, performed by the virtuous without desire or motive,
हरिभक्तो नरो यश्च स च मुक्तः श्रुतौ श्रुतम्
A man devoted to Hari is liberated; this is declared in the scriptures.
मुक्तिश्च द्विविधा साध्वि श्रुत्युक्ता सर्वसम्मता 2.25.
O virtuous one, liberation is of two kinds, as stated in the scriptures and accepted by all.
हरिभक्तिस्वरूपां च मुक्तिं वाञ्छन्ति वैष्णवाः
Vaiṣṇavas desire liberation in the form of devotion to Hari.
