द्रव्याण्येतानि मूलेन दत्त्वा स्तोत्रं पठेत्सुधीः
Having given these substances as prescribed, the wise should recite the hymn.
सावित्रीति चतुर्थ्यन्तं वह्निजायान्तमेव च
With the Savitri mantra ending in the fourth case, and ending with 'born from fire'.
श्रीं ह्रीं क्लीं सावित्र्यै स्वाहा विप्रजीवनरूपं च निबोध कथयामि ते
Śrīṃ, Hrīṃ, Klīṃ, Svāhā to Savitri; listen, I will tell you the form of sustaining the Brahmins.
कृष्णेन दत्ता सावित्री गोलोके ब्रह्मणे पुरा
Savitri was given by Krishna to Brahma in Goloka, long ago.
ब्रह्मा कृष्णाज्ञया भक्त्या पर्यष्टौद्वेदमातरम्
By Krishna's command, Brahma, with devotion, encircled the mother of the Vedas.
द्विजातीनां जातिरूपे प्रसन्ना भव सुन्दरि।।2.23.
Become pleased, O beautiful one, in the form of the birth of the twice-born.
नित्ये नित्यप्रिये देवि नित्यानन्दस्वरूपिणि
O eternal one, O eternally beloved goddess, whose nature is perpetual bliss.
सर्वस्वरूपे विप्राणां मन्त्रसारे परात्परे
O embodiment of all forms, O essence of mantras for the Brahmins, O supreme among the supreme.
विप्रपापेन्धदाहाय ज्वलदग्निशिखोपमे
To burn away the sins of Brahmins, you are like a blazing flame of fire.
कायेन मनसा वाचा यत्पापं कुरुते द्विजः
Whatever sin a Brahmin commits by body, mind, or speech—
इत्युक्त्वा जगतां धाता तत्र तस्थौ च संसदि
Having spoken thus, the creator of the worlds remained there in the assembly.
अनेन स्तवराजेन संस्तूयाश्वपतिर्नृपः
By this king of hymns, the lord of horses is praised, O king.
स्तवराजमिदं पुण्यं त्रिसन्ध्यायां च यः पठेत्
Whoever recites this auspicious king of hymns at the three junctions of the day—
नारायण उवाच ददर्श तत्र तां देवीं सहस्रार्कसमप्रभाम्
Nārāyaṇa said: There he saw the goddess, radiant like a thousand suns.
उवाच सा तं राजानं प्रसन्ना सस्मिता सती
She, pleased and smiling, spoke to that king.
सावित्र्युवाच वाञ्छितं तव पत्न्याश्च सर्वं दास्यामि निश्चितम्
Sāvitrī said: Whatever you and your wife desire, I will certainly grant all.
साध्वी कन्याभिलाषं च करोति तव कामिनी
Your beloved desires a virtuous maiden as well.
इत्युक्त्वा सा महादेवी ब्रह्मलोकं जगाम ह
Having spoken thus, the great goddess departed for Brahma's world.
राज्ञो धनाच्च सावित्र्या बभूव कमला कला
From the king's wealth, by Sāvitrī's grace, Kamalā, the artful one, was born.
कालेन सा वर्द्धमाना बभूव च दिने दिने
In time, she grew day by day.
सा वरं वरयामास द्युमत्सेनात्मजं तदा
Then she chose the son of Dyumatsena as her husband.
राजा तस्मै ददौ तां च रत्नभूषणभूषिताम्
The king gave her to him, adorned with jewels and ornaments.
स च संवत्सरेऽतीते सत्यवान्सत्यविक्रमः 2.24.
After a year had passed, Satyavān, steadfast in truth and valor—
जगाम तत्र सावित्री तत्पश्चाद्दैवयोगतः
Sāvitrī went there, afterwards, by divine arrangement.
यमस्तज्जीवपुरुषं बद्ध्वाङ्गुष्ठसमं मुने
O sage, Yama bound that living soul, making it equal to the size of a thumb.
पश्चात्तां सुन्दरीं दृष्ट्वा यमः संयमिनीपतिः
Afterwards, seeing that beautiful woman, Yama, the lord of restraint,
यम उवाच यदि यास्यसि कान्तेन सार्धं देहं तदा त्यज
Yama said: If you wish to go together with your beloved, then abandon the body.
गन्तुं मर्त्त्यो न शक्नोति गृहीत्वा पाञ्चभौतिकम्
A mortal cannot depart while holding onto the body composed of the five elements.
पूर्णश्च भर्त्तुस्ते कालः ह्यभवद्भारते सति
The time allotted to your husband has become complete, indeed, while you remain in Bharata.
कर्मणा जायते जन्तुः कर्मणैव प्रलीयते
By action a creature is born, and by action alone it perishes.
