देवसेनां महाषष्ठीं कार्त्तिकेयप्रियां सतीम्
The army of the gods, the great Ṣaṣṭhī, the chaste one dear to Kārttikeya,
ब्राह्मं पाद्मं च वाराहं कल्पत्रयमिदं स्मृतम्
The Brahma, Padma, and Varāha—these three are known as the three kalpas.
चतुर्विधं च प्रलयं कालं वै मृत्युकन्यकाम्
The fourfold dissolution, time, and the maiden of death,
अथ धातुः पृष्ठदेशादधर्मः समजायत 1.8.
Then, from the posterior region of Dhātu, adharma (unrighteousness) was born.
नाभिदेशाद्विश्वकर्मा जातो वै शिल्पिनां गुरुः
From the navel region, Viśvakarman was born, the teacher of artisans.
अथ धातुश्च मनस आविर्भूताः कुमारकाः
Then, from the mind of Dhātu, boy-children appeared.
सनकश्च सनन्दश्च तृतीयश्च सनातनः
Sanaka, Sananda, and the third, Sanātana,
आविर्बभूव मुखतः कुमारः कनकप्रभः
A boy of golden radiance appeared from the mouth.
क्षत्त्रियाणां बीजरूपो नाम्ना स्वायम्भुवो मनुः
The seed-form among kṣatriyas, named Svāyambhuva Manu,
सस्त्रीकश्च मनुस्तस्थौ धात्राज्ञा परिपालकः
That Manu, together with his wife, remained as the protector by the command of Dhātṛ.
सृष्टिं कर्त्तुं महाभागो महाभागवतान्द्विज
To create the world, O twice-born, the greatly fortunate and devoted one,
चुकोप हेतुना तेन विधाता जगतां पतिः
The Creator, Lord of the worlds, became angry for that reason.
आविर्भूता ललाटाच्च रुद्रा एकादश प्रभो
From his forehead appeared eleven Rudras, O Lord.
सर्वेषामेव विश्वानां स तामस इति स्मृतः 1.8.
He is remembered as Tāmasa among all beings.
गोलोकनाथः कृष्णश्च निर्गुणः प्रकृतेः परः
Kṛṣṇa, Lord of Goloka, is beyond qualities, transcending nature,
शुद्धसत्त्वस्वरूपं च निर्मलं वैष्णवाग्रणीम्
Of pure sattva nature, immaculate, foremost among the Vaiṣṇavas.
महान्महात्मा मतिमान्भीषणश्च भयंकरः
He is great, noble-minded, intelligent, fierce, and terrifying.
पुलस्त्यो दक्षकर्णाच्च पुलहो वामकर्णतः
Pulastya was born from the right ear, and Pulaha from the left ear.
अरणिर्नासिकारन्ध्रादङ्गिराश्च मुखाद्रुचिः
Araṇi emerged from the nostrils, and Aṅgiras from the mouth's palate.
छायायाः कर्दमो जातो नाभेः पञ्चशिखस्तथा
From the shadow, Kardama was born, and from the navel, Pañcaśikha likewise.
मरीचिः स्कन्धदेशाच्चैवापान्तरतमा गलात्
Marīci came from the shoulder region, and Apāntaratamā from the throat.
हंसश्च वामकुक्षेश्च दक्षकुक्षेर्यतिः स्वयम् पितुर्वाक्यं समाकर्ण्य तमुवाच स नारदः
Haṃsa was born from the left side of the abdomen, and Yati himself from the right side; having listened to his father's words, Nārada spoke to him.
नारद उवाच कारयित्वा दारयुक्तानस्मान्वद जगत्पते
Nārada said: After making us engaged in austerities, tell us, O Lord of the world.
पित्रा ते तपसे युक्ताः संसाराय वयं कथम् 1.8.
Our father has engaged us in austerities; how then are we to participate in worldly life?
कस्मै पुत्राय पीयूषात्परं दत्तं तपोऽधुना
To which son has the supreme nectar, greater than austerity, now been given?
अतीव निम्ने घोरे च भवाब्धौ यः पतेत्पितः
Who, O father, would fall into the exceedingly deep and dreadful ocean of existence?
निस्तारबीजं सर्वेषां बीजं च पुरुषोतमम्
The seed of deliverance for all, and the supreme seed of humanity.
भक्तैकशरणं भक्तवत्सलं स्वच्छमेव च
He is the sole refuge of devotees, affectionate to devotees, and pure indeed.
भक्ताराध्यं भक्तसाध्यं विहाय परमेश्वरम्
Worshipped by devotees, attainable by devotees, abandoning the Supreme Lord.
विहाय कृष्णसेवां च पीयूषादधिकां प्रियाम्
Abandoning service to Krishna, which is dearer than nectar.
